Yes, it's him :)
DAF isn’t quite TB / YOLT / OHMSS in the visual department, but I agree these two shots are pretty.
I'm just a big fan of stark lighting, wide shots that show off a great set (which thanks to Ken Adam, we have tons of!), perspective shots, shots with multiple points of interest, etc., which DAF has a lot of. I did a project years back where I cast all the first decade Bond films from DN to DAF in black and white, and that's where you can really see the beauty of these movies on full display. They are gorgeous in color, but some shots, particularly FRWL, take on an entirely different mood and bring out that Cold War spy thriller aesthetic. When a shot looks good in color or monochrome, you know the filmmakers really considered what they were shooting and how it was going to look on the big screen.
I think DAF's biggest strength is its location shooting, particularly Vegas. It's pretty crazy to watch it and see a part of the world that just doesn't exist anymore. It truly is a time capsule of the old Vegas, in all its debauchery, hysteria and glitzy ostentatiousness. There is also a sort of noir mood to it that I pick up on, with Bond playing a detective like role in the city in the desert, which I presented in a review of it I did. There's a lot to this movie that I really enjoy, for all its camp.
I have to side with @CraigMooreOHMSS on this one.
Despite the considerable talents behind cameras on DAF, Las Vegas is not exactly “scenic” IMO. Having been there several times over the years I can say that unless you like to gamble or to eat (the city is filled with lots of great restaurants), it can be kind of bland. And although the city has attempted to diversify in the years since the early 1970's, it can still come off that way. To paraphrase, Olivia Harrison (when it was decided to make Las Vegas the home of the CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’s “Love” show on The Beatles: "Vegas? Why Vegas?" **
Among DAF’s various locations, only Amsterdam holds any real promise, and it isn’t on screen that long. And as for the oil rig finale…. the less said the better.
** Great show BTW, and the annual "Fest for Beatles Fans" convention was held in 2007/2008 to take advantage of it. But during my stay, I really did struggle to find other things to do beside catching up on some stuff for work that I had taken with me!!!!
I'm not too keen on DAF, but I'm sure they'll be a few decent options
Other Bond films have that too of course, and that’s partly why I, being a fairly melancholic person, just love to revisit these older Bond films.
@Dwayne, I don't like what Vegas stood or stands for, nor do I think I'd catch myself dead there, but I still appreciate the look DAF gives us of a now non-existent time in history. There is a time capsule element to it that I enjoy, like hopping into a time machine.
And, as I said, I think Vegas is a great location to stage a Bond film, as it has a very "anything goes" kind of vibe to it that also evokes all the old noir trademarks and tropes. It could've been used better, absolutely, but I still enjoy it. It would be cool to see another Bond film really hone in on the nature of crime and have 007 on the trail of criminals as he follows the contraband pipeline, so to speak. I like that DAF lets Bond (and us with him) run into all manner of colorful killers, lowlifes, schemers and gangsters. It has a wild, but fun sensibility to it that I can tolerate more than Hamilton's later work. Sean being there makes it easier.
