    On the other hand, I wouldn't say that invisible cars or giant CGI waves are part of the cinematography.

    You are correct. The content is not the cinematography. The way the content is shot is. And you're also correct about the distinction between CGI objects like the invisible car or the tidal waves and digital color filters, the latter being part of the cinematography and the former not. So to James' point about the shoddy CGI in DAD being part of the film's cinematography, I agree that in this case it is not.

    Not sure how to interpret the parasailing scene, since the entire background and its composition is fake, but I get the point...

    I mean, just for reference Skyfall probably has objectively the best cinematography in the series yet it also has crap CGI.

    I guess my point was to differentiate using CGI for an object (or face) with using it for composing an entire scene. Granted the parasailing scene in DAD was only a small part of the film, but it don't see why it isn't fair game, as decisions like lighting, shot composition, color, are all computer generated...and absolutely horrid to look at.

    It's worth saying that even in the parasailing scene a level of practical filmmaking would have been required. There needs to be if you want to digitally add a James Bond into your giant CGI wave. It would have probably involved Brosnan strapped to a metal board/holding two straps in a studio in front of a green screen, the camera filming him from various angles and creating the required camera movements. In this sense the shot compositions, camera movements and even the lighting for that scene would have been done practically. It's just that they created a bunch of waves and glaciers on a computer.

    Believe it or not, DAD doesn't actually have as much CGI as most people think, especially by today's standards. There are also moments where CGI is used that are less noticeable (the scene where Bond escapes from the MI6 ship and climbs up the ladder from the harbour is an example - the background was created using CGI and shot in front of a green screen). In fact, a lot of the VFX in films today is unnoticeable to most viewers.

    Believe it or not, DAD doesn't actually have as much CGI as most people think, especially by today's standards. There are also moments where CGI is used that are less noticeable (the scene where Bond escapes from the MI6 ship and climbs up the ladder from the harbour is an example - the background was created using CGI and shot in front of a green screen). In fact, a lot of the VFX in films today is unnoticeable to most viewers.

    The fact that the camerawork and lighting of Brosnan was all done practically occurred to me as well. The imperfect lighting is a legitimate complaint, but that's a noticeable problem in the green screen work of every one of Craig's films too. We're in the era of green screen and while CGI in general is getting better and better Bond's VFX artists don't seem to have worked this problem out yet as of 2021.

    Ultimately we're talking about 20 seconds of the film anyway. A comparable example would be the gigantically sized car and construction equipment in the rear projection footage of Dr. No. Do you discredit the film's cinematographic merits because of one short sequence that was questionably filmed?
