Of all the controversial aspects of Skyfall, I never thought cinematography would be one of them lol.

It is indeed a very controversial film amongst Bond fans specifically. To be fair, I do get that some people don't like the 'digital' look of the film and can understand it's not to everyone's taste in this forum (I personally love it and think it's very innovative, especially in the context of films made at that time), so it's not just a case of some people disliking the film in general and reflecting it in this vote. To be fair, Bond fans are not necessarily representative of general viewers nor do they represent any sort of consensus on what is broadly seen as the best cinematography in a Bond film (as seen in previous comments some have been unsure as to whether the CGI in DAD was part of the cinematography and have even asked what cinematography is). I do feel sorry for a film like SP, which does have some some very specific lighting choices that aren't to my taste, but the camerawork, shot compositions etc. I would argue are much better than the majority of films it was placed under. QOS has some very dodgy camerawork (no, it's not just the editing) and I'd argue some outright bad shot compositions/choices but it seems to be doing well, which I think is due to the relatively 'cult' following it has amongst Bond fans. Ah well...

    Anyway...

I’m not sure how you came to the conclusion that people aren’t downvoting Skyfall simply because they don’t like the film but are upvoting Quantum of Solace simply because they like the film, lol. Quantum of Solace is a great film, and its outstanding cinematography is one of the reasons why.

I think the film in general has an underdog reputation in these forums, mostly for its story ideas, many of which I like and have come to respect more and more in recent years. But to be honest, it's really not a participially well liked Bond film amongst general viewers, and actually is considered at the same level as DAD from many people I've talked to, albeit I'd say wrongly. I think it's seen in more of a golden light here, rightly or wrongly, and yes, at this point in time I think it's doing better in this competition than it would have done on this forum in past years.

Cinematography can be subjective, so it's not straightforward. Personally, I find many of the shot choices in QOS to be a bit misguided, much like the editing. Random shots of bowling bowls in the foreground of a shot of Green and his henchmen walking into the hotel (completely unnecessary and conveys absolutely nothing to the viewer, and you have a number of wide shots like this in the film. The editing choices do not help, but the cinematography choices are there). A lot of unpurposeful lighting choices, a bit too much 'shakey cam' during the chase sequences which really don't focus the viewer in conjunction with the editing etc. It's not the worst Bond cinematography (actually like most of the Craig era films it's arguably amongst some of the better ones) but I don't think it's quite as strong as is made out here.

But like I said, cinematography is subjective, and this is a Bond forum vote at the end of the day.

No gripes with what you've mentioned here (apart from disagreeing with your assessment of QOS)...just your clairvoyant ability to see into the motivations of those playing this game ;)

I don't even like SF but am surprised to see it being downvoted already.

And yes, I think the QoS cinematography is vastly underrated and underappreciated.

Mercy Flight against Tracy reciting poetry in Piz Gloria is franchise-best, maybe even cinema-best cinematography.
