Couple that with Denise Richards, and it's so obvious why that movie was a problem.

Why? You got a problem with Denise? (just asking)

    Good looking, bad actress.
  • This is where we differ. When I watch DAF or TMWTGG, it's like I read a Fleming novel... And IMO when I read the Fleming novels, I picture Moore from TMWTGG, and the DAF atmosphere and humour. IMO the Fleming novels were much more humourous than the Craig films, and are more in line with the '74 Moore and '71 Connery outings.

I'm glad you can see it that way, but I don't, and neither does a good deal of the world (it seems). The humor I read in Fleming comes at us dry, and dark; not the over-the-top antics of Moore.

moore is like flemmings bond at times but alot of the time he's doing his own thing as bond, which I enjoy. You have to admit he really made the part his own.

Every Bond is like Fleming's Bond at times. But, you're right: Moore made the part his own, and his films were enjoyable. But, I'm also right, and his antics were very over-the-top.

Yeah I agree alot of his films were over the top but I liked them

The mistake was not losing Janus. GE is the strongest and the best of the Brosnan era. Good villians, colorful femme fatale, strong Bond girl (Natalya) even Boris was fun. The problem with Brosnan cropped up in his second outing. TND suffers from a weak villian and terri Hatcher. TWINE, after the big buildup with Renaud it fell flat, Denise Richards really sucked too. I did like Electra and felt she was the strongest part of the movie. And DAD was just plain old bad.
They could have had as strong stories after GE but the Brosnan age never measured up to the initial entry. His movies progressively got worst.

I'm pretty confident that Janus, as an organisation, had some potential for resurfacing in future Bonds. However, without Trevelyan, Onatopp, Ourumov and Grishenko, the stakes would have been high - might they have reached the same quality, I wonder. I think that unless you carefully plan this a few films ahead, it's best to grant an organisation like Janus one very strong film instead of possibly a few poor sequels.

While I do think the possibility of Janus staying on as the "SPECTRE of the Brosnan era", would be really cool, my fear would be that it would grow stale and uninteresting. The "Big 4"- Trevelyan, Onatopp, Ourumov, and Boris- would basically be required to stick around and be killed off in a one-by-one fashion until the organization itself caved in by the end of the Brosnan era. Frankly, I don't particularly enjoy story arcs in extended series like the James Bond franchise, because I feel as if it limits what the next movie can and can't do. SPECTRE was fine in the Connery movies, because we had GF thrown in the mix to keep things fresh, and SPECTRE's stock of operatives were so numerous that it didn't matter who died, since there would always be more, along with Blofeld, in the next adventure. I prefer the Janus Syndicate to be strictly a GoldenEye feature- the movie provides a clear, exciting resolution to Trevelyan's organization and gives us a memorable lot of villains to hold as the standards for many other villains to follow. If Janus were to continue on into future Brosnan releases, my fear, as stated a second ago, would be a gradual weakening over time- and what with the change in directors for every Brosnan outing, each one would mess with the continuity, whereas with SPECTRE, Terrence Young was able to direct three of the six movies involving them. What's interesting to note is that just like the first three Connery movies, Daniel Craig's first two focus on a certain criminal organization (Quantum) in a story arc and his third, SkyFall, takes a "break" from that storyline, like Goldfinger did. I'm hoping that in Bond 24, Quantum will be brought back as SPECTRE was in Thunderball so that we don't lose a terrific opportunity to expand upon the organization that harbored evil masterminds like Le Chiffre, Dominic Greene, and Mr. White. If the producers do not intend to continue with Quantum, then it will be the perfect example of why the whole one film approach to Janus worked for the better.
