Would you rather drink a Campari fireside with Draco OR a Sherry with an unusually fine solera?

Love both but give me skyfall

I always found TSWLM a little overrated. I understand why so many love it and it does indeed have a great number of iconic Bond moments (the ski jump, Jaws, the Lotus submarine car, keeping the british end up etc) but for me its scale and bombast is also a bit of a negative for me. Its almost too over the top… especially Stromberg’s ultimate goal which is really silly, even by Bond villain standards. Not to say I dont like it or anything but its definitely a mid table Bond film for me.

So on that basis I would go with Skyfall, to me it is a near perfect modern Bond film and on a good day can outrank Casino Royale.

I agree, and the characters weren't even that great, with an exception of Jaws (whom I find cartoonish), they're not fleshed out, no danger present, I don't feel that Bond is in danger everytime I watch the film, and Moore's delivery of lines sometimes comes off as flat or not in the mood kind of thing, and the acting were wooden.

Skyfall is a great Bond film, acting, the danger and tension are present, and great characters.

SF. Can I still edit out 'go on then, eject me' and 'got in some deep water', though?

@Venutius , I love SF, and didn’t mind the ejector seat line, but I quite hate the delivery of “got into some deep water”…!! Every time I watch, I have a cold feeling dripping down my spine… 😣

    Skyfall.

While both films are still in my “top ten”, TSWLM has slipped a bit in recent years. Although I still enjoy the PTS and Roger’s performance, Barbara Bach’s “acting” – always a weak point IMO - has really started to grate on me during recent viewings (Sorry about that Mrs. Richard Starkey!).

As for SF, I have very fond memories of the leadup to “Bond’s 50th anniversary”, and the film – IMO at-least – lived up to the hype. It was, for me, an excellent blend of the Danial Craig iteration of the character and pleasing callbacks to earlier films (without being too overt like DAD).

That one was an interesting choice. I think I lean towards SF but Spy is almost a guilty pleasure for me. Still I am watching SF if choosing.

Okay on to our next battle of the third appearances as Bond.

Would you rather watch GF or TWINE?

The peak of Connery against Brosnan's third. This likely won't be as difficult a choice or will it? TWINE is an interesting film as the producers were clearly tweaking with the formula and we get a female baddie, we get Bond injured, though not much is made of this after the first act. We get some rather inventive action. A strong song from Garbage.

On the other hand, we have a stylish film of it's time. Perhaps the most colourful and memorable villain of the series. An elegant game of golf. A henchman who while mute makes for an unforgettable part of the movie. Of course there is the car! Dame Shirley delivering an epic song.

Which one is likely to be popped into the Blu-Ray?

GF. While I need to give it a rewatch at some point TWINE isn't my favourite Bond movie, needless to say!

TWINE, it's my favorite Brosnan film; He's at the top of his game. With a few tweaks, particularly the casting of Renard, it could have been a classic Bond.

    Goldfinger is iconic.

    TWINE is snooze inducing.

GF. GF. And then GF. TWINE is a convoluted mess with very few redeeming qualities.

BTW, @thedove, you haven't updated the thread title yet. I was all set to vote for Skyfall.

Lol, I initially read GE, as In Goldeneye ; I would choose TWINE over GE, but GF over TWINE. 😁

    GF, no contest!
  • GF, but having said that I can't really say I'm a fan of this battle. It's too one-sided given the reputation of both films. GE would have been the much better film to pit against GF.

Thanks for the call out @j_w_pepper I have fixed the title.

Yes it is a bit of a mismatch, but I was merely comparing the third entries together. The next one we will compare the fourth films of each actor. Might be interesting as we will have YOLT, MR, DAD and SP! Yikes some un-loved films in that bunch.

I'm one of those 12 blokes that like TWINE a lot, but...GF, without any hesitation.

I'm with you; it's no GF, but does not deserve the abuse it gets.

Well, let me be the odd one out, TWINE is more likely to go in the player here. Even though I love Gert Frobe, and OddJob is iconic, the film itself seems to drag and have this slow- tensionless movement to it. Dr. No, FRWL and TB all are far more interesting to watch. TWINE may not be the best film there is, but I find it an entertaining watch, with cherry-on-top the sexiest scientist ever to grace the Bond-films.

Okay and finally lets pit the fourth films of four actors!

First up we shall pit You Only Live Twice against Spectre

We have in one corner, Connery looking somewhat dreary and at times disinterested. But we have wonderful Ken Adams sets. We have ninjas, we have a haunting song by Nancy Sinatra and we have a freaking volcano liar!

In the other corner we have Craig in fine form, Blofeld returning to the screen after an absence of over 30 years. We have a kick ass henchman and we have Bond falling in love.

So which one is likely to be placed into the Blu-Ray player?

Would you rather watch YOLT OR SP?

    YOLT by some distance.
YOLT handily. Ironically, while SP was more connected to its previous few films than YOLT, it was YOLT that actually felt like it was organically built up to regarding SPECTRE and Blofeld. It's just a more entertaining film all around to me. I will say I think they are both some of Connery and Craig's weaker performances as Bond.

YOLT = Original Bond. SP = Imitation Bond. I'll take YOLT even though nothing in the film makes any sense.
