Beatlemaniac? How is Ekland connected to The Beatles?
For all I know, she's connected to Duran Duran as she's a friend of Nick Rhodes.
This one will be back on the gentlemen side of things.
Would you rather have Valentin Zukovsky OR Rene Mathis as your ally
On one hand, a former member of Russian Intelligence now operating in a murky world of caviar factories, casinos and smuggling. Valentin was resourceful, quick with a quip and while he was a bit of a criminal had a sense of right and wrong. He helped out our man twice, and lost his life doing it.
On the other hand, a disgraced member of French Intelligence who was enjoying life in the French Rivera. Mathis helped with his connections to law enforcement both in Europe and in South America. He was an older, wiser agent and helped Bond navigate some rough waters. We won't talk about how Bond left him in a dumpster.
Who are you choosing as your ally?
*edited thanks to @007HallY for the corrected last name!
But I'd rather have Zukovsky because he had an advantage of saving Bond's life from Elektra's torture, if not for Zukovsky's distractions, Bond would've been dead because we've seen how Bond was nearly dying from that torture chair.
Anyway, Mathis had a habit of talking much too loudly during important poker games (wow, I wonder just how Le Chiffre figures out that Bond knew his ‘tell’?) Not gonna lie as well, for the longest time watching QOS I wasn’t entirely sure whether he was in fact a Quantum agent all along who’d become disgruntled after CR, or if he’d been framed (seems to be the latter, but it’s a random thing for Le Chiffre to say to Bond, and the ‘code name’ in-joke, presumably to do with the fact that he’s clearly Italian, went over my head).
Zukofsky’s actually a great character. He’s a rogue and Bond obviously needs to convince him both times to help him, but he’s the stand-out in TWINE and saves Bond’s life.
To answer the question, it’d be Mathis in the context of the question (very resourceful/is there to help you). But Zukofsky’s a better character.
Blast! For a momment I thought of Barbara Bach. Sorry. Well, I’m a Peter Sellers fan, so I’d still go with Goodnight (hope I got that one right) ;)
Shes connected to Brittpop surely!
Zukovsky I just never took seriously. I liked him better in GE, than I did in his return in TWINE. But, like the films he was born from, he was a bit more of a cartoon rather than a fleshed out character.
Mathis all the way.
He's an actual Fleming creation and the actor who portrays him recalls Gabriele Ferzetti for me.
Lets move on to another battle of the Bonds! Bond has flirted with space and then went to space. Lets pit these two Lewis Gilbert films head to head and see which one comes out on top.
Would you rather watch YOLT OR MR?
YOLT, a wonderful snap shot of Japan in the late 60's. Little Nellie taking to the skies. A wonderful Barry soundtrack that features some much beloved melodies. A wonderful volcano lair created by Ken Adams. A haunting theme song sung by Nancy Sinatra.
MR, a globetrotting film that features Roger Moore hitting his stride as Bond. A return of a henchman, Jaws! This time Bond doesn't get stopped boarding the rocket, he gets in and heads to space. A theme song sung by Shirley Bassey that was rejected by Frank Sinatra.
Tell us which one are you watching?
Both films are relatively daft but my vote goes to YOLT for it's audacious volcano lair.
Having said that, I kinda like still not being that familiar with the film decades later. Always something new to discover.
YOLT, on the other hand, was just bland for me, the characters were a hit or miss, the second half grinds to a halt, the cinematography was dull, I do liked the set pieces in that Volcano lair but it's nothing as impressive as Drax's space station, the Bond Girl is a mediocre one, and worst performance by Connery who's literally phoning it in and sleepwalking through the role.
Maybe it would've a more meat to it had they've made it consistent from the first half.
So, no question here, MR wins by a landslide for me.
MR, daft as it is, and with the unwelcome return of Jaws, is just great fun and has a better villain and set pieces!
TSWLM.
TSWLM is not one of the options.
Your posting style and general attitude here are borderline trolling.
If you don’t like either of the options that have been posted, then don’t post.
I disagree about Moonraker, it's not his worst, it's either A View To A Kill, The Man With The Golden Gun, or Octopussy.
And I consider Diamonds Are Forever as Connery's worst.
You liked TSWLM, but hated wooden acting? I've felt that film is full of wooden acting, almost half of the cast of that film were wooden, but anyway.....😶
My posting style is the only one I can have. My English is not as good as yours.
My general attitude is fine. I have my opinions.
Opinions are fine. But in this thread you have one of two options, not one that you want too add.
And your attitude is aggressive.
YOLT is a film I personally find boring.
It gives you very best duck.
YOLT is OK but the script is undercooked. Where is Richard Maibaum when you need him?
Connery looks bored but i think this is the subtext of the movie. Bond is bored too. ;)
One thing that both movies (and LALD) proved was that writing Bond could still be successful. Despite what Maibaum’s ego told him, Bond could survive without him. The 3 movies are better without him. I wish Roald Dahl and Tom Mackiewicz would have written novelizations like Christopher Wood did with MR. It definitely would have been interesting. Although Harry Saltzman was forever upset with IFP over not publishing Per Fine Ounce, and I agree with him.
I’m narrowly going with YOLT for Donald Pleasence and his Blofeld. It proves that little screen time can make a memorable villain. MR is fun though, and in my upper half.
ZombieBond. YOLT indeed.
But I have to choose that volcano lair, and I can watch Connery having a nap, any day of the week.
But, I do have a small, growing affection for MR, and the job that Moore executed…
