Dream double/triple bills

Bond has had a long tradition of pairing two older films for a rerun at the cinema. While that practice is now long dead due to home video, it now allows us to create our own doube/triple bills with DVD's at home. So, here's a thread to make and debate your own.

Examples:

From Russia With Love/Thunderball (a potent mix of sex, action, SPECTRE, and Terrence Young)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service/For Your Eyes Only (The two developed Bond more as a character than most of the other films combined)

    Here's a couple:

From Russia With Love / The Living Daylights / Casino Royale (2006):three of the more serious Bond films. FRWL and TLD each feature great Cold War storylines while CR features what a fairly close modern-day equivalent.

Licence to Kill / Quantum of Solace: Two of the more "experimental" films. LTK boots Bond from the service, QOS being a much different looking film than we've seen before in the franchise. Both extensively feature South American locations, are their actors' second film, and are probably the two films that feature the least amount of humor.

Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Thunderball - Three of the best films and all from Young, the King of cool.

You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker - Three of the most over the top Bond films, all from Gilbert - could make for a fun viewing.

  • Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die, and The Man with the Golden Gun - I love Guy Hamilton's work.

For Your Eyes Only and Licence to Kill - A more serious, gritty Bond pairing.

TB/MR-Both the 4th Bond film for each actor. Both larger-than-life big Bond epics with scores by Barry, spectacular final battles between 2 competing armies, carnival scenes and a delightfully superconfident feel.

YOLT/OP-Both actors' penultimate EON Bond film, both send Bond to exotic Asia, both involve WWIII plots.

OHMSS with either GF(both Switzerland, both Avengers leading ladies, both Aston Martins, a long epic one that ends tragically followed by a quick, traditional Bond film with a happy ending) or TMWTGG(Bonds for the first and last years of the Nixon/Brady Bunch-era, both released at Christmas-time, both with name star villains).

DAF/TND-Jonathan Pryce & Teri Hatcher remind me of Charles Gray & Jill St. John. Plus, I could easily imagine the opening title song lyrics of either film as being written by either Tiffany or Paris after Bond dumped them.
  • Dr. No/From Russia With Love/Goldfinger

    The quintessential 1-2-3 Bond punch.

    From Russia With Love/Goldfinger/Thunderball

    A close second.

You Only Live Twice/On Her Majesty's Secret Service/Diamonds are Forever

On Her Majesty's Secret Service gets to be the Empire Strikes Back of this magnificent cinematic Blofeld trilogy.

From Russia With Love/Goldfinger/On Her Majesty's Secret Service

My 3 Favorite Bond Films triple bill.

    Thunderball/On Her Majesty's Secret Service/Moonraker

My favorite larger than life Bond films.

    Goldfinger/On Her Majesty's Secret Service/Quantum of Solace

    My 3 favorite Bonds.

    You Only Live Twice
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    Diamonds Are Forever

    ...essentially, the Blofeld trilogy...

    Dr. No
    For Your Eyes Only
    Quantum Of Solace

... the films are pretty serious, and very much grounded - and they feature Bond relying more on his wits, than gadgetry..

    DR NO/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

Classic early fairly faithful Fleming adaptions.

GOLDFINGER/ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE/FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

Great films that concentrate more on plot and style than just relying on action and spectacle.

THUNDERBALL/YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE/DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

The Connery films that stray into the fantastical territory and focus less on James Bond as a character.

LIVE AND LET DIE/THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN

    The JW Pepper collection!

    THE SPY WHO LOVED ME/MOONRAKER

The classic Roger Moore 70's films.

    OCTOPUSSY/A VIEW TO A KILL/THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS

Great 80's Bonds with a running cold war theme.

GOLDENEYE/TOMORROW NEVER DIES/THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

    Classic Brosnan era.

LICENCE TO KILL/CASINO ROYALE/QUANTUM OF SOLACE

Grittier and more violent Bonds with a greater focus on the character of Bond.

    DIE ANOTHER DAY/WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S

As a youngster I did see a few Bond double bills re-released in cinema.
The best by far was TB followed by YOLT. These two Bond extravaganzas back to back on the big screen in full colour and sound is something to behold.
I would give anything to see this double bill again.
I also have fond memories of LALD and TMWTGG double bill. The two original Rog/Guy Hamilton films work real well together.
OHMSS and DAF is another great double bill. Coming off the back of Tracy's murder, Sean's rampage in the DAF pts has fuller effect, otherwise its not so clear as to why he's beating people up, and yanking off girl's bikini tops at the beginning of the film. Mind you this might just be all in a typical days work for 007, but he does seem to be extra determined in the pursuit of his duties here.
Of the later films, I would like to see a FYEO and OP double bill. At home I prefer to watch double bills of successive films. If I am selecting a random twin bill, I will lucky draw one of the films and go with that film and what came after it.

Triple Bill: Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, and The Spy Who Loved Me
I did this over the summer and really enjoyed it! You have an escalating level of excitement and larger-than-life elements, beginning with a non-Bond, boring pre-title seqeunce of LALD and reaching a grand climax by the end of TSWLM.

    DN-FRWL-TB: The SPECTRE buildup trilogy

    YOLT-OHMSS-DAF: The Blofeld trilogy

    LTK-CR-QOS: The cold-blooded trilogy

    LALD-FYEO-OP: The Classic Moore trilogy

TSWLM-MR-AVTAK: The not so classic Moore trilogy

    GF-TMWTGG-GE: The Golden Trilogy

TND-TWINE-DAD; The "I'm going to take a nap now" trilogy

TLD is the odd film out, so I'll include it in the Cold-Blooded trilogy

GF-GE. I actually got to do this around a year ago at my college, but I would love to see them both together again. One I have not done that I would love to see in cinemas:

    DN-FYEO.

When i was young my uncle took me to see a double bill of FRWL and YOLT. This was when Rog was Bond so it was great to see a couple of Connery films on the big screen back to back.

    TB-FRWL

The major premise of FRWL is that SPECRTE want Bond dead for the death of Dr. No. But DN was a fairly low-key film. So, TB comes first because it's bigger in scale. And FRWL is revenge for the death of Emilio Largo - which explains why Blofeld is entrusting the mission to kill Bond to No. 3 and No. 5 instead of No. 2 and No. 4, both of whom Bond killed in TB.
  • What about OHMSS-FYEO: Seeing Bond visiting Tracy's grave right after she died, then deal with Blofeld in the helicopter. And both are more serious Bond film, but can at times still be great over-the-top fun!

    I like both of those.

OHMSS/TLD/CR-Triple feature debut films for the even numbered Bond actors(2nd, 4th and 6th). All 3 were down to earth, Flemingish reboots of sorts. They feature Bond's 3 most serious romantic involvements. All feature an interesting PTS that introduces the new Bond actor in a dramatic way.

  • yeah, there is something vaguely familiar with this, but it's not the same piece I commented on before

for arguments sake, I'll have a triple bill of Doctor No/The Man With The Golden Gun and The World Is Not Enough

if only for reasons they are Bonds I could sit through and be entertained, and there is a nice bit of variety involved

Yeah, I agree with you! FYEO would have been a more suitable approach to revenge on Blofeld for Tracy's death. DAF didn't really get it done. However, FYEO sort of made it too easy to kill Blofeld, and it wasn't a proper death for Bond's worst nemesis.

    TB/YOLT/OHMSS.

That would be a dream triple feature for me to watch on a theater screen. The first 3 truly big budget, widescreen Panavision Bond films. And I've only seen them on video.

I can't think of a better triple bill than the M Trilogy: CR, QoS, Skyfall. A true evolution of Bond and those around him, in more ways than one.
