Do you know, as the enormity of NTTD sank in, I began to wonder if she’d do this, after a suitable period for reflection.

Maybe they'll surprise us but I don't even have the smallest bit of hope or optimism for that.

It's weird feeling gut-punched over a business decision that I had no control over, but this was the one direction I had absolutely never wanted them to go in.

My first reaction to news is this feels like the death of James Bond as we've always known it.

Lot's of "glass half empty" here, fair too early to judge IMHO, lets be honest, the quality of the recent movie's has been all over the place, why not just wait and see?

I guess this means Timothee Chalamet is the new Bond

I wonder what Bond himself will be like. The tuxedo should be a standard but other things could be changed as far as looks and mannerisms.

Also, Barbara might still have a say in the next actor but not the final word.

Yes, I'm where you are on this.

I feel like I'm in the minority who's sort of "neutral" on this.
For one, I think we should hold off declaring MGW and BB as patron saints. Their run hasn't exactly been nothing but sunshine and roses.
Besides, who knows what the new dynamic will be. Perhaps BB still has some veto power, of there's a clause guaranteeing a number of cinema releases...

It'll definitely be a "monkey's paw" situation with many wanting Barbara to go away. I had a few of my own questions and concerns during her time in control, but I still very much enjoyed most of the movies made, and I'm 99% sure things are going to get worse and not better with the evil empire Amazon calling all the shots now. Honestly, just give me Dr. No through No Time to Die on physical 4K (UNCENSORED!), and I'll just sit in a corner happy enough to keep enjoying the 25 movies while the franchise gets ruined.

I’m probably the only one who feels this way but I’m honestly happy. Part of the appeal of James Bond was always knowing there’d be another film coming out every 2-3 years or so. Some were great, some were not so great, but you always knew you’d get your fill. It’s the episodic nature of the franchise that kept the series going for so long spanning multiple generations. Something that I am extremely grateful to Barbara & Michael for is restoring prestige to the Bond name, and creating some of the most financially and critically successful Bond films since the 60’s. No one can ever take that away from them and they deserve much credit, but sometimes perfection is the enemy of greatness, and you can only have so many long gaps before you lose an entire generation fans.

Family businesses almost always fail by the third generation. Cousins do not have the same loyalty as siblings do.

Perhaps Broccoli and Wilson were smart to cash out--for what had to be billions!--before that happened. Or Wilson has health issues. Or Broccoli is tired and wants to forge her own creative direction in life. Or retire.

Or they envision the copyright expiring soon anyway.

It's very sad news that they gave up creative control, though.

If the choice was this or no more Bond due to difference of opinion, I guess this IS the way forward.

Yes, they can hire whoever they want with all the money they have.

I suppose at some point we’ll get an indication of the creative team/individuals who’ll take on Bond.

I mean, we might get a James Gunn or Matt Reeves for all we know. They could be brilliant and expand the series without drifting into Star Wars territory. Or it could be a Kathleen Kennedy. But at this point we don’t know.

Excellent point about the 3rd generation thing @echo. I was just thinking the same thing. I never got the impression that there was a firm succession plan after Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. I could be wrong, but that has been my unspoken fear for some years now.

I'm confused re what exactly is the issue. Is it the family business selling up (that was always going to happen) or is the issue specifically with Amazon?

"I cannot imagine Bond after Daniel"
    Barbara Broccoli (Being James Bond)

I guess the significance of that statement has just hit home

I'm shocked, to say the least. Haven't posted here in quite some time, but just wanted to say that if they hire the right director (who gets Bond and respects the history) then it might work. I'm skeptical like many of you. Let's hope they can show some restraint and not flood the mine with "content" like a Zorin stooge.

The fact you are unable to understand the underlining context of the post accounts for your naive and childlike response.

Well, Daniel Craig succeeded in his goal. James Bond is dead.

    Long live James bond.

Bezos is already asking the public who they want as the next Bond. Oof.

Surprising, shock news but you could tell Barbara Broccoli didn't have enthusiasm to recast Bond nor move ahead with the next film. If her heart isn't in it then it's for the best to stand down.

It's sad to think Eon Productions last Bond film was the death of 007 but, suggested in hindsight, maybe it was meant to be.

Amazon can start fresh. Do what they want. The press statement had no mention of Bond remaining a wide theatrical release so we'll have to see what happens. Maybe Eon have a cast iron assurance Bond 26 will have a wide theatrical release?

It's possible Amazon Bond films will not be better/more creative or more enjoyable than Eon's Bond films, maybe you can't recapture the past, however, it will be a new phase for the franchise with lots of new possibilities and fingers crossed it can remain popular with the general film going audience.

    Eon Productions James Bond
    1962 - 2021

Thanks for the films, Eon Productions. 😊

Looking forward to the next movie where Bond is reunited with his long-lost daughter Mathilde (we don't worry about continuity) and the pair join forces to save the world, whilst eating ice-cream and going roller-skating at the weekends. Think My Spy with added John Barry.

Of course, there will be a reality audition show so that viewers can vote for who plays the tweenage Mathilde ...

... to quote a poster on BlueSky:

I just hope Amazon puts the focus back on classic James Bond storytelling elements. Like the long history of villains that are grossly wealthy, insecure egomaniacs desperate to validate their fragile egos with wild schemes to control the media, governments, and space itself.

The issue (IMO) is that Jeff Bezos is viewed negatively by many - especially here in the US. He is - for many - a real-life Bond villain (especially in light of recent events). And while Bond was never going to be sold to the "sisters of the poor", to have him buying it seems a bit ironic.

As I stated above, ultimately time will tell, but today (the more I think about it), this feels like a punch to the gut.
