  • The sword fight isn't the worst thing about Die Another Day. It's a bit overly dramatic (Did Bond think maybe Graves had something to do with North Korea?) and ultimately changes a gambling scene where Bond is in control and observant to one where he's completely lost his nerve. It's also a bit ridiculous that Frost follows the bet to the letter instead of stopping the destruction of this ancient club.

I think the bridge scene from MR is pretty adaptable into something like poker. Bond deals Drax a pair of aces and the flop seems quite favourable to him until the last cards. Callback to CR and also can poke fun at the ridiculous hands you see in films.

"I can't believe that hand was real!" "Of course it wasn't. You watch too many bad films"

It's a shame Graves doesn't cheat in the fight, but I guess that might have made it way too Goldfingery, and there's not really time for it anyway. I guess it fits the theme of him being a parody of an English gentleman, honouring the bet to the letter and all that.
Still, there is something quite fun about Bond suspecting Drax of being a bigger villain just because he cheated in a game, which I'd have enjoyed in a film. It's wonderfully petty for this international agent to work on that level, but not actually incorrect as villains do reveal themselves through these sorts of interactions, and it's that nice level of Fleming preposterousness which I like when it pops up in the films. Not just following the microfilm of this breed of poppy leading you to the next plot point, but something a bit more vibes based.

He knows he's got some sort of link to Zao from the diamond, but quite why he loses his rag so quickly I've no idea. It's very odd.

Graves does kind of cheat, as he elbows Bond in the face. Graves is, I think, also the first one to grab a bigger sword.

Nah, they agree to abandon fencing rules; and Bond is first to kick him.

I think the lack of any real location work and an overuse on green screen is one of the biggest sins that DAD commits.
As Cubby would say, put the money on the screen. Aside from Spain that doubled well for Cuba, most of DAD was shot in England and Wales. It shows, and I think audiences know when they’re being cheated.
I hope Amazon don’t take that path, and shoot in real locations around the world.

Such a good point. QoS has its flaws but you definitely feel like you’re on location with Bond.

DAD is, I think, the only Bond film where the main cast appear in none of the foreign locations the film is set in.
