@Shark is also with us on this one, so there are a few that don't like it. Now Moonraker is really good and so much better as well. In Spy even the music sucked.

You must be joking. I might not be a big fan of TSWLM, but Moonraker was just awful.

    "Bond 77" wasn't that bad.

No. I prefer Moonraker to The Spy Who Loved Me.

    It's alright. I'll give it a pass.

Better use of locations, great special effects, better Bond girl, better villain, better score, better performance by Moore and the fact that The Spy Who Loved Me is a near remake of You Only Live Twice.

There is no doubt more but I'm doing this from memory and haven't watched any of the Bond films in years. When I watch the series again later this year, I'll get back to you.

I fully agree. Within the first 5 minutes of the film, TSWLM basically reveals itself to be just that, a remake. It just replaced spacecrafts with submarines. Although I enjoyed it more than YOLT to be honest.

Yes. And I also prefer MR because:
    -The score so much better.
    - Bach is completely wooden in TSWLM. Naomi was under-used.
    - I adore Corrine and Manuela in MR.
    - I find TSWLM rather slow and drab. Submarine scenes in Bond don't do it for me either. MR is more entertaining and the pace is great. It's pure popcorn fun!
    - I find Strongberg extremely dull. Drax is the more interesting of the two.
    - Both have a great stunt in the PTS (though I prefer the skydive - there's more to enjoy).
    - Locations are varied and exciting in both but I prefer MR's use of them.
    - Sets are magnificent in both but MR's slightly more memorable.

I know Moore regards TSWLM as his favourite, but I think he was terrific in MR. I admit that Jaws was poor (and pointless in MR) and the film is not perfect by any means, but I would still say it probably makes it into my top 10, TSWLM is no where near.

On YouTube there is a video (I believe called "The Spy Who Lived Twice") which shows the many shot for shot sequences in both films that are near identical. From Bond or the girl in bed at the start to Bond jumping on a monorail.

The two most over rated films of the franchise.

GF, despite the shotty editing is less over rated.
  • I remember this having it's own thread. They're both really close IMO but I'll give the slight edge to TSWLM.

GF. It set the gold standard for the franchise, and most of the films that followed (with the possible exceptions of OHMSS, LTK, and CR) are unthinkable without it.

Based on previous comments, I think it must be said. I really don't like Moonraker, and couldn't ever imagine putting it above a classic like TSWLM. Whether or not TSWLM is heavily influenced by YOLT is beside the point. TSWLM is YOLT done right, and adds MUCH more color and excitement compared to the dull YOLT. Also, when compared to TSWLM's fast-paced action plot, MR sits still as a complete dud. Quite frankly, here's my look on that: Which is easier to sit througn and enjoy? TSWLM, or MR: It's definitely TSWLM.

In regards to the current topic, the same is true. GF is extremely slow and dull, and takes double the time to watch it start to finish as a result. TSWLM is a thrill ride start to finish, and it's over before you know it, which is always the mark of a great Bond movie!
  • TSWLM is my 5th favourite Bond after quickly ranking them in my head, and GF is probably my 7th or 8th. Moonraker is about 20th for me, it's meant to be James Bond but its Roger Moore in Star Wars instead. In my view, TSWLM is the funnest and most action packed Bond, it keeps going and going. Its great fun.

    Goldfinger

Like Samuel001 I was never that fond of TSWLM either. Too campy and overboard with the gadgets. Most fans consider it to be Moore's best but I always felt OP was his best Bond film.

The Spy Who Loved Me is a fine Bond film, but my God, GOLDFINGER is my choice. A no brainer here. Goldfinger gets an ungodly amount of slack here on these forums, and I just don't understand why. To me, Goldfinger is one of the best films ever made. (I'm sure that'll be quite controversial around here!!!!)

    2. Goldfinger (1964) - 10/10
    3. From Russia With Love (1963) - 9.5/10
    4. Dr. No (1962) - 9/10
    5. Thunderball (1965) - 8.5/10
    6. The Living Daylights (1987) - 8.5/10
    7. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) - 8.5/10
    8. GoldenEye (1995) - 8/10
    9. You Only Live Twice (1967) - 7.5/10
    10. License to Kill (1989) - 7.5/10
    11. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) - 7/10
    12. Octopussy (1983) - 7/10
    13. For Your Eyes Only (1981) - 7/10
    14. Live and Let Die (1973) - 7/10
    15. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) - 7/10
  • @SJK91 I am curious, what is number 1 on that list.

Casino Royale, believe it or not. I have a great deal of history with that film and have loved it ever since I saw it in theaters 6 years ago. It's a bit of nostalgia I suppose, but I find that film incredible. I am admittedly thinking of giving it a re-watch however...I haven't seen it in awhile now, and I'm wondering if I'm going to enjoy it as much as I used to!
  • Yes its my 4th or 5th favourite.

The 2 most famous Bond actors' 3rd films battle against each other. Both are considered highly by the general public.

Despite its somewhat falling out of favor recently, GF gets my vote. Connery and Barry are the deciding factors here for me.

Two of the gilt edged Bonds.

GF is probably the better film but I adore Spy more. It just has that Fleming sweep that drives you along and that Liparus supertanker interior is just stunning.

Both are two highlights of the series IMO.

TSWLM easily for me, always been a bit disapointed by Goldfinger.

TSWLM for me....GF is very over-rated and Bond doesnt do much in the whole film if you look at it properly, not even stopping the nerve gas that would have killed all the US soldiers (and he didnt look too concerned about it either).
Gert Frobe is the best thing about GF along with the golf match.
  • TSWLM!

Agreed. GF is very overrated and you're right, this is one of Bond's most inactive movies. which slows the overall pace down to a screeching halt.

    TSWLM: 10 votes

We've got one more day on this round, keep voting!
  • TSWLM was the movie that I watched over and over as a kid.Its maybe my thrid or fourth favourite. Always will have a soft spot for both films but to be perfectly honest, I would rather watch TSWLM.

Me too. GF is really boring, and can't hold my interest for very long. Also, I despise Pussy Galore and the music. No, I don't dislike John Barry or anything, but the score is annoying! Also, Goldfinger himself can be quite cheesy at times. And another thing, GF has possibly the most boring second half of any Bond movie to date.
