But CR just has more meat on the bone.
I'll agree that GF is a bit "oafish" and slightly overrated but I think he's more memorable than LeChiffe. Plus, when was the last time you saw Bond and the baddie play golf. Bond plays cards all the time ;)
I suppose they are quite different in style. GF was never a particularly "deep" novel anyway.
:P
No, I think I need to watch them all and will do later in the year. I've forgotten why I thought what I did, about many of the films.
I love Casino Royale and it will always be in my top five but GF is in my top two. It's the first Bond film I saw from start to finish and just has a good feel to it. Plus it has more classic scenes, like when Bond is tied down to the table with the laser about to cut him in half, when Bond and GF are playing a game of golf, and when Bond meets Pussy for the first time.
These two films feel like polar opposites to me.
Thanks! It's a very tedious task trying to count up the votes, so I'm glad someone did the job for me!
Currently, the score is 9-8, with Casino Royale in the lead by one vote! I knew this would be a good round!
That was my thinking when I was trying to decide which two to pick. Also, GF is considered a classic, and even in only 5 years, CR is starting to go down that road as well, so we'd get a similiar feel. I figured that we'd bring in the "Fantasy Bond" fans and the "Fleming Bond" fans with this round.
GF the film isn't TOO different to GF the book. True its more fantastical and some of the plot details are different but quite a lot is fairly similar
-Bond being asked to investigate Goldfinger on suspicion of cheating at cards in Miami
-Bond meeting Jill Masterson
-The presence of Oddjob, Goldfinger and Pussy Galore
-Bond playing golf with GF
-Bond being trapped by GF and almost being killed only to be spared at the last minute (its a saw rather than a laser).
-Tilly being killed by Oddjob's bowler hat (at the end rather than half way through)
-The elimination of a gangster who doesn't want to be in on GF's scheme
-The climax is on board an aeroplane
An abomination? That's quite a bit of anger for a man of peace, Professor Doctor Metz.
The death of GF in the book is more brutal thats for sure. Fleming said it was the first time Bond "went beserk". I suppose they wanted to tame it down a bit. I don't really have an issue with GF's death, its still quite a good sequence (naff special effects aside).
Eh, I really hate the ending. It's too rushed, which makes no senese considering they had PLENTY of time to draw it out, given the 1 hour 50 minutes run time. Also, the fight between James and Auric is WAY to short. You get this build-up throughout the movie as if it'll come down to a kind of fight like 006 vs. 007 in GE, and then it turns out too short and very dull.
YOU ARE SOOOO RIGHT!! Despite what GF meant to the series/genre and containing all the elements from beautiful women, eglomanical villian, good henchman, Sean in his heyday and charm it simply has not "aged" well. It looks very very "dated".
CR like FRWL and OHMSS will age very gracefully. so my vote goes to
Casino Royale
Casino Royale
Most of Fleming's books are pretty dated too but they are still "classics" when it comes to 007.
Well, typically, "classic" means "old".
This fits GF perfectly.
Conclusion: Casino Royale.
Now on to the next round! It'll be a showdown between Connery and Moore, as we go to the space Bonds!
You Only Live Twice vs. Moonraker
