Better performance, the best Bond, better idea.
And Strawberry Fields is faarr better than Aki.
You Only Live Twice has its faults, but it also has: Connery, Ken Adam's most outrageous set, John Barry, and an on-form Lewis Gilbert.
Quite an easy one for me:
You Only Live Twice
YOLT dragged alittle IMO but was still entertaining but QoS had a better pace.
So I'm voting for YOLT. Better locations, much, much better villian (my favourite Blofeld, and my 2nd favourite villian overall), better action, and better Bond. There's some bad moments (japanese Connery), but there is with every Bond film. Connery might've been bored, but it doesn't show. The finale is amazing, there's ninjas, a really fun, memorable Bond film that has all the great classic elements.
So editing and script flaws and all, I still pick Quantum of Solace.
OH, how could I forget! Thanks @Volante for picking up my slack.
@ SIR SEAN- what did you feel was rushed about the ending of QOS? Granted the whole movie is too short and laden with plot holes regarding the minor characters, but I thought the ending with Kabira and M ranks as one of the best in the entire series. Craig is absolutely Bond as we know him in those scenes. Lessons learned. That demeanor plus a lot more fun is what I expect we're going to see come late October/early November.
I am a QoS fan but the end is very weak. A total rip off of Bourne 2.
How is the raping inappropriate? We hit that benchmark in LTK. It shows just how evil Medrano was and how much he needed to be put down like a rabid dog.
Well, I guess compared to murder raping isn't that bad, and murder in Bond movies is ok in my book. I don't know why, but everytime I see that I just think they crossed the line. And yes I agree about your last statement. But I think I find raping too mean to be seen in a Bond film. They could have implied it instead.
It set the character up to be the villain though, and it is very modern and happens a lot. It is the sad reality of the world that we live in, and it will be just as haunting whether it is said outright or implied. If so much more like killing, smoking, and drinking is thrown into the films, including allusions to lesbianism, why not rape? Granted, rape is more vindictive than murder. It is the ravaged taking of innocence, and the victim has to live with the wounds for the rest of their lives.
Well it didn't really NEED to be there. We get it. Medrano was nasty! At least Della's rape (and murder) was offscreen.
I agree. Della's rape and murder has never offended me. But the way it was filmed in QOS (I mean, we can almost see her va"""") is too much for me. I know the world might be this horrid, but why show it on screen? I'd rather have a lighter movie like YOLT than something I can see on the news.
Medrano's raping of Camille's mother and sister was offscreen too, and he never raped the maid/woman at the hotel.
All true, including your comment on Bond's solace and the ultimate meaning of the word. I am amazed at how intelligent and insightful you are for such a young fan, and have great respect for your opinions even when I might disagree a little bit. Getafix as a result, is mistaken in his reference but welcome to his opinion should he reform that thought based on his mistake. Craig is just what Bond should be in an interrogation such as this, sympathetic to Corrine but deadly serious with Kabira, who is all but wetting his trousers thinking Bond is going to kill him over Vesper and knowing that there's no way out of this. Such a presence as Bond hasn't been seen since the TLD Pushkin interrogation, an absolutely commanding and magnificent performance and then we finally see him assume the professional demeanor that M expects him to have. Lessons learned.
I am also totally sick of the Bourne comparisons as well. Hopefully come November, we won't hear any more but there will always be those so biased and half witted that they can't come up with anything meaningful or original 8-}
Dr.No vs. Casino Royale
License to Kill vs. Goldeneye
This is one of the reasons why I do give thumbs up to Quantum of Solace. It has flaws for sure, but once you get past the misguided editing and rushed script, it's quite clear that there lies a great Bond film underneath it all.
