Cassandra Harris, IMO, contributed the most to cinematic Bond due to her introducing Brosnan to Cubby.

That's one hell of an un-Barry score then! ;)

Just gone back and done more research into Norman's involvement in DN and, yes, it appears he did write the majority of the score for that film, in which case he should have been included in the previous event. Apologies on that one then, peeps.

However, I still maintain that while Norman came up with the main melody for The James Bond Theme (the 'dum-di-di-dum-dum' guitar opening played by Vic Flick - originally from the song Good Sign, Bad Sign from a musical he wrote called A House For Mr Biswas), it was Barry who was called in after Norman had completed his work on the theme and the rest of the film's score in order to flesh out the theme. He then totally re-arranged the theme adding in ostinati, counter-melodies and bridges, including all the very distinctive Barry-esque brass. So, methinks it's fair to say they effectively both wrote it.

Anyhoo, on with the voting...! ;)

Good research. Even if we left out Norman from the pantheon of composers, we are all by this exercise, that much more knowledgable on the origins of the iconic James Bond Theme. Norman can share in the broader John Barry glory.

Well, Norman's spent many years fighting in the courts over and over again to maintain sole credit as the composer of the theme, ensuring he alone gets the legal credit (in movie credits and elsewhere) and, of course, the royalties. One may say then he's done well enough - indeed, better - out of it than he deserves... ;)

    For anyone curious enough:

You can indeed hear the Bond theme quite clearly in this 1950's ditty. I hear a bit of Underneath the Mango Tree as well. But Barry's contributions to the original presentation are profound. It would be interesting to know how hard Barry fought for a writing credit back in 1962. He may not have fought very hard though. It would have been real difficult to foresee what a goldmine the credit would be in the future.

She has long brown hair that goes on forever, looks good in a wet t-shirt and rocks a crossbow and now, like one of her oh-so deadly arrows, she's struck at the heart of the (very much mostly) male throng of this very community by claiming the title of the best '80s Bond Girl. Yup, Carole Bouquet's taken the gold, folks.

Not that far behind her is the, quite frankly, still-doable-today Maud Adams in the guise of Octopussy, who thus claims the silver just ahead of the nowadays-still-absolutely-lovely Maryam d'Abo, who may own a cello sullied with a bullet hole but now also possesses a bronze medal.

And the rest of the top eight are Kristina Wayborn's Magda and Barbara Carrera's Fatima Blush in fifth and sixth respectively, both of whom are sandwiched between the LTK duo Carey Lowell and Talisa Soto, while filling the last points-scoring-for-the-Medal-Table-position is the Marmite-like Tanya Roberts, who (given this event featured 14 rather than just eight entrants) takes less a wooden spoon than a golden (gate) spoon. I thank you...

Oh yes, @DiscoVolante, it did prove to be time for Sweden to get some points - not two, though, a genuinely impressive 12. Yup, thanks to the triple-thronged attack of Adams, Wayborn and Stavin, a silver and a fifth place here ensures that the western quarter of Scandinavia now fittingly lies ninth on the table, just one place behind the nearby Denmark.

Elsewhere, both England and the States keep their points tally ticking over nicely thanks to yet another medal for the former (bronze) and three placings in this week's event for the latter (fourth, seventh and eighth). Speaking of the leaders, France's good form continues, as picking up the gold here sees them now open up more than a 10-point lead over Wales and the rest of the chasing pack.

But the final word must go to, yes, mighty Nicaragua. Er, of course. Yup, Fatima Blush may have 'only' achieved a sixth-place finish in the contest (and, thus, three points for this table), but it means that after competing in its one and only event, Nicaragua has done the truly impressive - it's actually got itself on the Medal Table. Hats off, indeed, then to the non-official Bond bombshell herself, La Carrera.

Event 9 coming up soon, chaps...! :

Hokerly-dokerly, we're now around about a third a way through the tournament, folks, so why not mark the occasion one of the big events? Why not, indeed... :)

    the_2012_james_bond_007_olympics-1-1-9.jpg

    <i>The competitors:</i>

usa_flag.jpg Richard Maibaum <font size=1>(DN, FRWL, GF, TB, OHMSS, DAF, TMWTGG, TSWLM, FYEO, OP, AVTAK, TLD, LTK)</font>
    wales_flag.jpg Roald Dahl (YOLT)

england_flag.jpg Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (TWINE, DAD, CR, QOS)
    canada_flag.jpg Paul Haggis (CR, QOS)

So, the task is simple... please arrange the eight competitors above into your favoured ordering - first to last (greatest to least) in terms of their <i>contribution to the cinematic James Bond</i>.

Voting for this event should remain open for <i>about a week</i>, after which the results and the updated Medal Table will be posted in this thread (as well as in the thread's opening post).

Oh, and just a reminder - when you do vote, please vote in this manner, chaps (as outlined in the thread's opening post); makes it a hell of a lot easier for me when I'm totting up the totals... ;)

    1st place (<font color=DarkOrange>Gold</font>) = 10 points
    2nd place (<font color=Gray>Silver</font>) = 8 points
    3rd place (<font color=SaddleBrown>Bronze</font>) = 7 points
    4th place = 5 points
    5th place = 4 points
    6th place = 3 points
    7th place = 2 points
    8th place = 1 point

Over to you, folks - get voting...! :)

Good lord this one is difficult. Mr. Maibaum gets first place of course, but for the rest I really could arrange them in any order and be satisfied.

    1. Richard Maibaum - 10 Points

For the rest, I used a randomizer...I got this:

    2. Michael G. Wilson - 8 Points
    3. Christopher Wood - 7 Points
    4. Tom Mankiewicz - 5 Points
    5. Purvis and Wade - 4 Points
    6. Roald Dahl - 3 Points
    7. Paul Haggis - 2 Points
    8. Bruce Fierstein - 1 Point

Haggfish if I must for 8th but I'd rather vote Johanna Harwood (DN, FRWL) than award even a single point to such a cretin. yecch. :-&
Actually I would rank Harwood 4th if she was eligible.
Yes, I know, quibbling again. :\"> but as always I graciously defer to the game-master, who is doing all the actual work.

Why isn't Michael France mentioned for Goldeneye? Just asking; I thought he did the screenplay at first, did he not get any credit? Or was it just his story used not screenwriting?

    Otherwise:

    Maibaum - Gold
    Wilson - Silver
    Mankiewicz - Bronze
4th - Haggis (for CR; who was the main writer??)
    5th - Wood
    6th - Fierstein
    7th - Purvis and Wade
    8th - Dahl
