David Arnold's availability was never a factor in choosing a composer for 'Skyfall'

Goldeneye would be a great score for any other action adventure with a Cold War/Russian theme. But agreed, it lacks the classic conventions that will make it compete with Arnold and especially Barry. On the other hand, Arnold used too much techno in Die Another Day.

Disagree. I just think the GE score is just plain bad. It is one of the few film scores where I've sat there watching the movie and been actively aware of how bad the music is. Serra completely messed it up. His whole tone is very weird in that film - he either didn't care what he was doing or misunderstood the nature of a Bond film. Either way, it sucks.

"Ladies First" being your major proof there I'd imagine! In a way I agree with you and then in a different way I disagree. I think some parts of the score work and then other parts completely take you out of the movie. I loved the Casino music and the music for Bond and Natalya, and the earlier suspense cues were okay. But "Ladies First" is a really bad cue.
  • I absolutely loved the Goleneye Overture, but the music during the car chase after the titles was offputting and quite frankly, plain silly.

I liked Goldeneye because it was unique and had its own sound although it is admittedly not very Bond-ish. On that note, I also like the many Barry-ish themes that Arnold uses, but they can fall a bit short or flat. Personally, I'd think keeping Arnold as the main composer with an add-in temporary composer here and there would work best (sort of like the 70's with Barry). Enough to please everyone and keep things fresh. I think Arnold has improved with time. Thus a Newman here and there just may allow Arnold to store in the creative juice to make a very Bond and yet interesting/unique score.

    Of course, just my opinion.

I've never seen this much DA love! :O

I'm confident Newman will deliver an excellent score. And I don't mind DA returning after some time has passed.

Good idea. I think DA having some time away will bring him back hungrier and fresher. He has definitely improved with time.
