Good question, he hasn't been active since February 15th. Hopefully life has kept him busy and he'll return soon enough.

That was me the first time I was introduced to them a long, long time ago. Incredible band, Peart is my favorite drummer.

Pretty amazing stuff. I can't remember liking a band so much this quickly; immediately Rush has become one of my favorite music artists.

The Spirit of the Radio is my absolute favorite. Others I liked the most would include Subdivisions, Limelight, Red Barchetta, Tom Sawyer, 2112, The Working Man, What You're Doing, The Big Money, and Freewill. Lots of others I could mention but those are the biggest for me.

Those are some excellent choices! Check out Closer to the Heart, as well, if you have yet to. It's one of my favorites.

There's almost always something to enjoy about them: the overall chemistry of the band, the phenomenal lyrics, the insane talent behind the instruments, etc.

Afternoon all. After your thoughts. I have to admit that, currently, I am fairly overweight despite losing 21kg over the last 12 months. I feel better but want to start getting and feeling fitter. So, I am thinking of joining a local gym to build up fitness, feel healthier and lose more weight that is very much needed. I'm just worried that being this way, I'm open to people staring or sniggering or whatever and if that happened I feel that I'll fail. I'm just wondering people's thoughts on that as I really do want to join up.

My respects for losing 21kg in one year! That's really great!

I guess you changed your way of eating if you lost that much weight.

Losing weight and keeping the new found weight is always a combination of eating right and doing sports.

If you are not sure about going to a gym regularly, then don't. There are many ways to do sports at home or outside.
I don't know your health situation but if you can run or walk then that is a great start to do something to become and stay fit.

You can start by running 5 minutes, then slowly walk 5 minutes, run 5 minutes again, walk 5 minutes and finally run another 5 minutes. Even if that is too much to start with you'll get there relatively soon and then you could add minutes.
Three times a week would be enough, in between days, just walk for say 30 minutes, if you can make it 50 minutes. Normal paced steps, but steady and no pauses.

Gym is best for free weights and building up muscles. That is important too of course.
A combination of lifting weights, outdoor walking/running, is best in my opinion.

Even if you do the running or cycling on machines in a gym you have to start slow.
I don't think anyone will look funny at you on such machines.

In a free weights room there may be stupid people that love to look at themselves in the mirror.
I was one of them in my earlier years by the way, although I would never have ridiculed other people. I was simply too much in love with my mirror image.
But even that can feel discouraging to others I think.

In the end it all comes down to what you can motivate yourself to do regularly. Maybe a trial run in a gym would be good, if they offer such a thing, a three month period, one month period or whatever.

It's all highly individual really. It would be great if we can in any way help you reach your goals.

Cheers Jason, thanks for the encouragement and advice. I think I'm going to give the gym a trial run and go from there. Fingers crossed it'll all be good.

@Shark_0f_Largo, lifting weights is the best way to burn fat while you're building muscle.

If you are functionally training (using all the body parts, from the core out, via lifting), you will be "damaging" your muscles as they were designed to be damaged-- which means they have to be re-built (fats+protein+complex carbs-- look into the paleo diet, cut out simple carbs/refined sugars (and you'll continue dropping fat%))...

Unlike a good run where the "after burn" of calories only lasts about seven hours, the after burn of functional training takes 2-3 days... That's right, if training properly, it takes the body 2-3 to repair damaged muscles; the entire time fat will be burned to give you the energy to re-build.

BUT... after the repairing process is finished, the metabolism wants to return to DAY ONE levels, so that's when you hit the gym again-- keeping your metabolism afloat.

    This is called being "metabolic".

You need to also get on a progressive plan, since the body adapts every 8-10 weeks...

My best advice would be to join a gym and invest in a trainer if you can, three times per week for the first three months.

Congratulations, @Shark_0f_Largo, you've taken positive steps; I wouldn't be too worried about what others think of you in the gym-- most are too busy working on themselves, and others are actually feeling a little self-conscious too.

Hiring a specialist to assist in this journey will be the safest and quickest way of obtaining your goals.

    I hope this helps.

@Shark_0f_Largo, I'll second Jason's advice in that if the gym isn't the place for you, you could always get yourself some cheap weights and alter your diet as best as you can and work from home. A bit of walking, a bit of running, some sit-ups and push-ups, etc. are totally free if weights aren't your thing. Last year I got in the groove of doing 50 sit-ups and push-ups a day, and with each day, I'd increase the number by 10. That's all I did and I couldn't believe how much different I was looking after just a couple of weeks. As always, I found a way to stop doing it and negate all the progress I made. Best of luck in your continued journey of weight loss!

My college, of all places (community college, the sister school of WVU, in the middle of nowhere in West Virginia) is offering a summer course, of ALL courses, solely focused on James Bond. Uhh...what? Where was that shit when I was attending? We didn't even have a film appreciation course of any sort, but this? It's like someone realized what I would've enjoyed taking a few years ago, and is enacting it now.

A man can dream. I'd be the professor of the course by now if that was the case.

Whoa, cool. There is certainly literary merit to be found within Fleming's novels and film criticism to be discussed regarding select titles. Just so long as the class isn't somebody's agenda to dissect and disparage the character and Fleming alike for being some kind of woman-hating bastard. Do you have a link to the syllabus?

@Creasy47, that's amazing. I could never take a class like that, as much as I'd want to. I'd annoy everyone in the class and the professor, raising my hand to give my obsessed perspective on every aspect of each lesson every single second of the time. When I wasn't yapping passionately, I'd still be raising my hand to correct a comment from the professor or another student when they get a fact about Bond's history wrong.

I could never do that to anyone.

I don't, I heard it through a radio advertisement a few hours ago. I'm not even sure if it's regarding the novels, the way the ad came through it made it out like the films were the sole focus, which is a bit odd yet still cool.
  • I see. Did a quick look up online and there have been college-level James Bond courses in the past, covering both the books and the films. There's a lot to discuss really, from looking at the character as a pop culture icon to how the character has reacted to historical events like the Cold War to progressing through the AIDS crisis and the politically correct 90s.
