Nobody was bashing him mate. No forum exsists where everyone can have the same opinion. Can you seriously not handle others disagreeing with you? Having a vast array of seasoned opinions is what makes this place as great as it is.

That's what I've preached for years. Do you guys know how dull this place would be if we were in agreement about every single aspect of the series? It'd be so boring.

Without @Thunderfinger's and @Getafix's burning hatred of Brosnan, I'd have no proper chance to praise the man.

You need hatred of Brosnan to praise the man?

Well I don't. A little more reasonable take on the man's tenure would be in order on this forum, but that's like wishing for Christmas in September.

I can see why @BondJason gets sick of it as there have been a couple of examples where people have gone out of their way to be negative for no reason (bumping really old threads just to leave some one sentence comment about how crap something was), and it's never nice seeing something you enjoy getting relentlessly shit on, but I agree. Different opinions keep things interesting so nothing wrong with people giving those opinions if the conversation goes that way.

And to be fair, since SP there seems to be sort of a re-evaluation of the Brosnan films. I know that there's a couple of members who don't really like him who have come around and started to look back on his films more fondly (@bondjames @Birdelson). I think this is as close to a Brosnanaissance as we're gonna get guys. Lets enjoy it

I don't dislike him either, although I too think very poorly of TWINE (but in my case I always have) and don't rate TND too highly either due to its generic and overly familiar approach. I did rank him the lowest among all actors (and still do) due to his penchant for overacting and because I personally think he took too long to find his footing as Bond (something he has admitted himself).

I have however started to look upon his tenure more favourably post-SP, because I realize that he had certain strengths which the incumbent lacks, and after 11 years I'm beginning to miss those qualities in a Bond.

I was about to put him ahead of Dalton recently due to my reassessment of his era, but then I had a very positive viewing of both LTK & TLD (despite the Afghan section) and realized I personally thought Dalton was overall more consistent and authentic.

    Connery
    Moore

    Craig

    Lazenby

    Dalton
    Brosnan

    Brosnan

    George

But I, too, have loved them all. The role to this day has yet to be miscast.

I find it really hard to rank them but if I had to then it'd probably be

    Dalton
    Brosnan
Craig (if the next one is as YOLT esque as I'm hoping and he nails it then he'll definitely take second place)
    Connery/Moore (can't choose, both legends)
Lazenby (but I do think if he'd done a few more films and grown into the role he could rival Dalton for me)

I just feel bad putting any of them towards the bottom because I think they've all been very good, I don't think Bond has ever been miscast.

    Also agreed.

    Absolutely. We've been incredibly fortunate.

My own list would probably look as follows-ish:

    Brosnan
    Lazenby
    Craig
    Connery
    Dalton
    Moore

But again, not a bad Bond among them. How highly I think of Moore attests to that.

Ranking the actors is always difficult for me.

    My Top 15 films are:
    OHMSS-GE-TLD-TSWLM-DN-GF-SP-OP-TND-LTK-FYEO-DAF-DAD-MR-YOLT

Timothy Dalton always will be my favourite, both films in my Top 10.

Sean Connery has 4 in my Top 15
    Roger Moore has 3.
    Pierce Brosnan 3 as well.

    Lazenby 1 but on Top.
    Craig 1.

So I guess that would be my ranking and it sounds about right, whereas it could be argued that Lazenby should be on Top mathematically speaking.

    -DALTON
    -CONNERY
    -MOORE
    -BROSNAN
    -LAZENBY
    -CRAIG

Not sure about the other three. It'd probably be Lazenby, Moore and then Brosnan. George is helped by OHMSS, but also does a fine job at prime points, and at the very least Roger knew what he was doing and very much played his Bond with commitment. Brosnan was held back by both the films themselves and at times an uneven or meek performance on his side, and that hurts him most of all. The latter era is full of what I don't like in the films; overly crazy gadgets, unrelenting one-liners, poor humor, weak female characters with little beyond their looks, and just an overall parodical identity with a lack of style, craft and impact. In short, the low point of the series.

    1. Sean Connery
    2. Daniel Craig
    3. George Lazenby
    4. Pierce Brosnan
    5. Roger Moore
    6. Timothy Dalton

Ranked purely by how much I enjoy each actor in their films.

@JamesBondKenya, it's interesting that you put Dalton and Moore right together. Usually a fan prefers one type of Bond and not the other, with serious portrayals ranked high and the frivolous ones lower, or vice versa.

I can't really remember how I ranked them when I was your age, because at that time it was Sean and Dan and nobody else mattered. Looking back the ranking probably wouldn't be that different from how I have it now, as I don't think my interest in certain eras has fluctuated that much. I just love what I loved then more now, and maybe found things to appreciate in what I didn't despite still not being wholly won over.

Well if im perfectly honest, i love every bond actor pretty much the same. Except for lazenby. The rest of them to me each have their own individual pro and con and have their own excuse for being at the top of the list. So i find it very hard to rank and from that my rank often changes.

    Connery
Pro- hes iconic and very bond book like
He is a mans man and can do the action when he needs to and he romance when he needs to

Con- i dont like him in yolt and diamonds as he seems to be lazy

    Lazenby- pro- well nothing really
Con- he is a shitty actor, doesnt look like bond- doesnt act like bond

Moore: pro- hes a lot of fun and a more humour and romance- easy going bond- a fun way to spin the character after seeing all the connery ones. I think the biggest thing about moore is he always provides a solid performance. He is never tired or lazy and always seems to love the role.

Con- well hes not very book bond is he.

Dalton/ pro- very much the fleming character. He looks dangerous, he looks upset. He has a bit of humor then its back to being glum. He looks like a guy who can pull of action and he truly takes the series to new heights in his two more out of the box outings. To me he is just fun to watch because he is serious and gritty just like what i picture when reading fleming bond. To me its truly a shame he didnt get at least 4 films.

Con- his hair is kind of dumb in LTK and in a couple scenes he does come across as wooden

Brosnan: pro/ hes a blend between moore and connery which i love.

Con/ sometimes hes a bit too goofy for a serious bond or to serious for a goofy bond- and his films are half and half for good

    Craig:
Pro- in cr and qos he protrays flemings character quite well. I like how realistac and rough his bond is. He has just the right amount of humor, grit, and charcter in his first two films

Con- He doesnt look like bond
    And
He does a shitty job of acting in spectre( though i think we have come to the consensus that was mendes fault.)

Another ranking of mine may look like this
    Brosnan
    Dalton
    Connery
    Moore
    Craig
    Lazenby

    Or

    Connery
    Dalton
    Brosnan
    Moore
    Craig
    Lazenby

    Im just not 100% sure

  • Was just listening to a Fleming interview (I think this was pre-Dr. No) and he talks about how he wanted a "flat, quiet name" and how he thought the name James Bond fit that perfectly.

If only he could've seen what the future had in store.

Fleming was also pretty meta in the books, teasing Bond about his name (I think Gala makes fun of it in Moonraker for example) and have women view him as this stereotypical charmer and suave guy in the parodical way the movies went on to portray him at times. It's also amusing that, in Dr. No, Bond's cover is to be an ornithologist, a playful wink from Fleming to the whole origin of the character's name.

I also like the running gag throughout the books of Bond being referred to by women as a Hoagy Carmichael look-alike, as if they all had the same immediate impression of him.
