Recording for posterity. Or at least this discussion. [From @Agent_99's Jack Barclay Bentley in Mayfair mission.]

Likely inspired later advertising. Or maybe it's just an obvious direction.

I brought a bottle of this back from France, where rhum agricole is more common and cheaper. It's made from sugar cane rather than molasses, originates in the French Antilles, and is the 'proper' thing to use in a Ti' Punch.

I like the brand name, too :)

Reading some non-fiction i came across this anecdote from the filming of Thunderball in the Bahamas.

    41HWAYC7yLL._SL250_.jpg
The Battle for Bond, Robert Sellers, 2007.
Terence [Young] was a born bon vivant who mixed in high circles with the ease and grace of a lord of the realm. One afternoon he was in the camera boat with
Connery and Claudine Auger when a huge yacht came alongside. Young made
out the figure of a man on deck in a white suit wearing the Cordon of the
Legion d'Honneur, a massive award in France which DeGaulle and only a few
others had. "So this guy has to be a pretty big fish," Young announced. The
man shouted across at them that he'd heard they were filming and wanted to
meet Young, as they had some mutual friends. "I've brought you a present," he
said stepping aboard and producing a big magnum of Dom Perignon. He got
some glasses out of a fridge, filled them with ice, and when he started pouring
the champagne over them Young screamed, "No, no, no. No champagne and
ice!" the man said, "My friend, I shall never teach you to direct pictures, you
should never teach me to drink wine. I am the Count de Vogue and I own Moet
et Chandon. We make Dom Perignon." One suspects this sort of thing
happened to Young all the time. It's a nice Bondian tip, too. If ever your
champagne gets warm, put ice in it for 30 seconds, then remove it. Hey presto,
    it's chilled again.

Very cool! I had an Aviation in a cocktail bar recently, because I couldn't resist that name and the colour.

I'm teetotal so the most exciting drink I'd have is sparkling water with a bit of cordial in it.

Straight vodka or a whiskey cola. Both hit the spot for me.

Do you have a preferred whiskey?

    Hmm... :-?

I only drink JD mixed with Cola, but if I have to pick another one it would be Johnnie Walker Red Label.

    Which I prefer pure.

I tried Johnnie Walker Red Label recently and couldn't stand the flavour. Managed to finish the bottle though.

Jack Daniel's and Crown Royal are my go to whiskey's, Smirnoff for Vodka.

I've yet to try a whiskey I didn't like. I prefer whiskey without anything added, but JD with cola ain't wrong!

I was going to try a bottle of Jim Beam a few weeks ago and the clerks talked me out of it. So I just went with something familiar. How would you say it stacks up to JD?

I like clear liquids, still JB and Coke is fine. For a direct comparison some knowledgeable imbiber can opine.

I can report Bond in the books drinks Jack Daniels a couple times (On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice). Jim Beam doesn't get a mention.

Though Felix pours Jim Beam for OO7 in The Living Daylights.

For the rare occasions when whisky is the thing I really fancy (when it's cold and wet out, usually),

I like Jim Beam but I'll drink anything. I'm a highly functioning alcoholic, at all times. I had PTSD experience back some time ago.

I never had Crown Royal... must try it, then. :-?

And (y'all gonna laugh now), I very much like Strongbow Cider (red apple & strawberry). :-S

Out of those two I would say JD. It's smoother.
But, there are alot of bourbons under £50 that are better than JD if you can find them.
Michters, Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig, Makers 46 to name a few.

I like Jim Beam but I'll drink anything. I'm a highly functioning alcoholic, at all times. I had PTSD experience back some time ago.

This is the most worrysome post I've read in a long time. I used to drink rather large quantities of alcohol, for several reasons, but I'm now only drinking when I really feel like it. Never to ease tensions or anything like that anymore. I did have a bit of PTSD after beeing attacked on the street by five youth. I got away fairly unscaved (nothing more serious than a lot of bumbs and bruises) but it could've ended far worse (can't really remember what happened). Anyway, that was one (more) reason to drink and it made things worse in the long term. I eventually did seek help and it got me out of it.

Please read up on PTSD and alcohol, and consider finding help. It may not feel like a problem but it is, and I promise you, life can be far more enjoyable than it is now!
