He’d have meant soda water, so just fizzy water - in one of the books he stipulates Perrier. I’d not heard of a rum and soda; whisky and soda is more common (see Moonraker).

Thanks @Agent_99 watered down Mount Gay sounds yuk! I love it neat myself!

Personally I like it with Coke, which isn’t very Bondian!

Not at all. It's also bad for your teeth, with all the sugar.

Aquired my first bottle of Mount Gay XO a few weeks ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I might have to try the soda thing. That might seriously just be a nice summer day drinking option.

I actually tried it with lemonade and ice last night and it was surprisingly very good.

A nice drink on a summer evening.

(That's British lemonade by the way as I think in the US it's quite different?)

Rum and Coke is a fine drink.

In CR, the Mount Gay (Jamaican rum) and soda looks like it was mixed with cola to me. And Bond doesn't skip a beat.

I've recently moved house. Photos of the Bond collection coming soon, but meanwhile here's my drinks cabinet.

    Mojito time!

(Did I buy this rum because I was pleased that LALD had taught me what a duppy was? Maybe. It's good, anyway.)

I was in a very salubrious establishment last night.

@Agent_99 The drink sounds great. Bond's world could certainly do with more orange.

Oh, and: Riff raff? What is this, the 'No Quarrels Club'?!

Through the generosity of a friend, I have acquired a bottle of Kina L'Aero D'or, which I have so far struggled to find, but is meant to be extremely close to the original Kina Lillet in taste.

A friend of mine is coming over on Tuesday so we'll shake up some Vespers with it and let you know.

I've made Vespers with Cocchi Americano before. Must say, I think they're better stirred. From what I remember as well Fleming's measurements are a bit over the top, and if followed literally from the novel results in a massive cocktail. Between that and trying out his scrambled egg recipe (which is delicious incidentally and recommended, but loaded with butter) I can see why the man died in his mid-50s.

Just got myself a nice bottle of The Maclean 12 year old triple cask recently.
One of the smoothest Whisky’s I’ve ever had.
    Absolutely splendid.

I can share earlier this month in Louisville Kentucky I enjoyed a Mint Julep.(no silver of pewter cup, though--and before I mixed it the image doesn't indicate there's bourbon in there).

That at The Brown Hotel, where I enjoyed a Seafood chowder and their signature dish The Hot Brown (I had a Petite Hot Brown). A dish created during hard times that endured to become a staple, still contemporary comfort food. Had a great experience there.

This monday, I bought that :

It's not Kina, of course (that one has, if memory serves, been discontinued), but there's still quinquina in the recipe. Given that it's still a 17 % proof alcohol, I prefer to dring it in a small glass, and no more than one glass a day. At this rate, the bottle will last me quite a few days.

I wasn't aware that Lillet still contains quinine after dropping the "Kina". Just imagine, drinking it more often could have avoided Covid infections.

Here's my Martini Royale at the front veranda of the Fairmont Empress Hotel, Victoria, British Columbia.

In the distance is the Government building and that statue of Queen Victoria with her unamused look.

Sounded like a good idea, but would have been better served staying more traditional.

Chapter 2 - The Mind is the Man
Bond glanced around him, not appearing to be in any kind of hurry, as he walked the last few yards toward the museum. Away to his right the statue of Queen Victoria stood, unamused, before the large domed Government building.
