Wonder what Bond would have made of his colleagues over at MI5 shadowing Charlie Chaplin.

  • Even better is the thought that Charlie Chaplin may have been born in a gypsy camp. From Russia With Love, ahoy!

I kinda see a cold war (dark) comedy- plot in this. Born in a gypsy camp, becomes world known comedy star, and because of a few incidents he's being subject of interest for British Intelligence and CIA and has to clear his name.

Knowing my luck, they're even spying on me! This doesn't really surprise me.

No doubt some of your comments here have attracted the attention of the authorities. You never know who's listening in...

Interesting indeed. Charlie was just one victim of the many blacklisted in the worthless Communist hunts. Brilliantly historic time, but so sad for all the men and women who were needlessly kicked out of the US.

    Oh... don't mean you, JB.

Well, at least one spy had an encounter with "Charlot" (as he's known in France). Ian Fleming himself. Read Thrilling Cities for all the details.

It wouldn't be the freedom-loving, extraordinary-renditioning nation that it is today if they hadn't kicked out Charlie Chaplin.

I seem to remember J Edgar Hoover himself personally blocking CCs return to the USA because he saw him as a dangerous pinko.

    Mad as a cut snake.

I know you're getting on a bit, but do you really 'remember' this, in the sense that you witnessed these historical events? I guess it wasn't THAT long ago.

  • I was never a fan of Chaplin, I was more Buster Keaton back in the day, worked so much better

Apparently Charlie's wife had a small part in Casino Royale (1967) of all things and if that's not enough his granddaughter even appeared in Quantum of Solace

Bain of my life, it was meant as a joke. I do realise he probably isn't 80 years old.

Well, to be fair, it wasn't a very funny joke.

Any way, judging by Balt's last comment may be he is getting on a bit.
