Summary

A comprehensive description of Ian Fleming’s literary oeuvre that ranges from the first draft of Casino Royale in 1952 to editions still being published sixty years later. Unparalleled in scope and scholarship, this is a critical reference book for fans of one of the twentieth century’s greatest thriller writers.

Description

Ian Fleming was a journalist, publisher, travel writer, motor enthusiast, card player, accomplished golfer and noted bibliophile, but above all he was the creator of secret agent James Bond 007, an icon of popular culture.

Much has been written about Fleming and his legendary creation, but until now there has been no serious bibliographical account of his published work. Ian Fleming: The Bibliography is not only an indispensable source of information for collectors, enthusiasts, libraries and booksellers alike, but an entertaining and informative volume that will appeal to anyone interested in the James Bond phenomenon. It covers every aspect of Fleming's writing, from the manuscript stage, through typescripts, uncorrected proofs, advance and review copies, first and subsequent impressions, paperback printings, omnibus and collected editions, as well as periodical appearances, comic strip adaptations, young reader and large print editions published in Britain and America. There are sections covering Fleming’s more obscure literary endeavours, as well as his published reviews and interviews. Each main entry includes an engaging narrative on the conception, editorial process and marketing of the novel, complemented by a full list of source books. Biographies of Fleming's closest confidants are provided, and a detailed chronology of the author's life completes this bibliographical masterpiece.

The work has been compiled with the approval of Ian Fleming’s literary estate and the assistance of the Ian Fleming Foundation.

The Author

Jon Gilbert is perhaps the foremost expert on the works of Ian Fleming and the literary history of James Bond. Through Adrian Harrington Ltd, he has become an internationally renowned dealer in rare Fleming material. Ian Fleming: The Bibliography is the result of both a career immersed in the writings of Ian Fleming, and three years intensive research following Fleming’s centenary year in 2008.

I will definitely be getting this!

I already had to pass on Talk of the Devil but I seriously consider getting this. Compared to TOTD this seems like a steal. I'll definitely go with the Standard Edition though.

If anyone owns Talk of the Devil I'd love for them to give us an idea of what it contains. Any good Bond film ideas in there? Names, places, action sequences?

From what I've heard there's a guy in Sheffield and another in Doncaster. Both having a copy under lock and key, neither ever having browsed their treasure. Hearsay if you please. I've yet to meet a lucky owner on a Bond site.

It was thought by those in charge, Talk of the Devil would be made available to purchase to the public. I'm not sure if this happened though - and a real shame if it didn't.

I've no idea why you wouldn't read such a book anyway, that's crazy!

Wait, what's Talk of the Devil? Is it a lost Fleming Bond book or something?

It's not kept from the public exactly; it's merely available only in a very exclusive edition of Fleming's complete works by Queen Anne Press. The reasoning supposedly being that this complete edition would only find its buyers if it incorporated exclusive previously unpublished material. There may even be some overlappings with The Bibliography - actually there must be - but I have no way of telling for sure. Fact is, Talk of the Devil remains an incredibly expensive tome that is still seldom seen and may in the end not have sold as much as QAP felt it would at the time. I've read somewhere it's still to be had from QAP, thus indicating the limited edition didn't sell out in during close to four years now.

Be that as it may, we'll most likely see the odd copy turn up on the market within a decade or two.

'Talk of the Devil' - What a great title as well for a book/film!

Very cool. I remember seeing that on the home page a while back. It is a pretty nice title for a film, though I prefer so many others to it.

Hefty price, but I will indeed have to add the deluxe edition to my collection.

If you can find it, please do @Dragonpol. It seems very hard to purchase now. It was released last year.

Oh, I see, meaning prices will have skyrocketed by now. Just my luck. I somehow missed this last year.

Insane price. I couldn't even find it just by doing a quick search, and I figured the price would be even higher now.

It's actually £175 for the standard edition and £250 for the deluxe but look online - I can't find the damn thing anywhere.

The extracts from it look really, really great.

That's nowhere near as bad as the price I could have swore I saw. Yeah, I've checked so many outlets and sites, I can't find a single copy of it.

It certainly is - a week's wage to most - but it's a lot less than Talk of the Devil.

Well, there's actually 2 for sale there at £185 and £170 - must be the ordinary, not the de-luxe editions. One of them even signed by the author.

The former is signed by the author. I'm not sure if that comes with every edition or not, the seller seems to flaunt it in the description.

With that new link, $326 seems to be the cheapest. What a steep price.

    Can I ask a question?

Is the grey one the deluxe one and the red book the ordinary edition or vice versa?

That first option, is right. The grey one is the deluxe edition with the red being the standard.

All I want is to find someone who has read it. This must be a fantastic full of new information.

Well, from £250 to £185 is quite a price fall. Perhaps they didn't get as many sold as they imagined.
