Then all this time, I really must have been watching Bond films from an alternate universe. Or I really should go and change my oculist...

The last time I watched it was on TV really late, I watched the 1st hour or so and thought i'm enjoying this I'll record the rest. The rest was a bit poo.

It's not as bad as everyone makes out, including myself. There are plenty of good moments, just quite a few clunkers as well.

See? Now, that's a reasonable statement. Some here actually come out to tear the film apart as if it brought doomsday on their doorsteps, making comparisons to Batman and Robin that Schumacher (however his name is spelled) made even, which I find very cringe-worthy.

If it's not gunning for Oscars or trying to make a 'Best Of...' list, some people will hate it. DAD is far from being a great film, but is there a lot to enjoy? Absolutely. I've no issues with firing up that movie and having a blast every time - at least it's fun.

It is fun. The film is ridiculous as it is absurd. I'll tell it like it is. But, it's fun. That's the point.

Visually its my favorite Bond flick but the scrpit neeeded to be polished and while I don't mind Halley as Jinx, i do think an European actress would have been better.

It would have been the spy who loved me all over again but a Russian agent would have looked better.

Visually I think it looks cheap and poorly directed. The Craig era on the other hand is much more polished (including QoS).

IMO, there was nothing cheap looking about the Brosnan era.

The Stealth Boat is decent enough, I don't think you can call it out, but most of DAD is poor.

Up until Cuba it was teriff, then it became a generic mid card action movie. Pants really.

DAD is at least memorable, amusing and entertaining, even if in a comedic way. I've always believed that the film was intended as a caricature. The lines in themselves suggest this. They were written for maximum cringe effect. Wit was not the goal here. It succeeded at what it wanted to be. Strangely, that was an amalgam of two films: a more serious low key earlier half which harkened back to the past, followed by a terribly OTT contemporary last half.

Sadly, the same cannot be said of its predecessor, which I found insipid, tedious and forgettable.

I think you give a lot of undue credit to suggest it was intended as a caricature. I refuse to believe the end product resembles the vision of the majority involved. I honestly think P+W had a very specific vision for this movie that was utterly butchered by Tamahori, and Babs & MGW found themselves between a rock and a hard place. It's certainly entertaining in parts, and memorable, but it's a bona fide mess in terms of tone.

Come on Bond used to be a trend setter not a trend follower. Tried to chase the N.American market and failed creatively.

Remove Icarus, and the gene therapy crap altogether and it would be much better for me. They should have done to Moon what they did with Joseph Gordon Levitt in Looper. Use practical effects instead of the lazy, Korean guy turns into British guy with some bullcrap magic plastic surgery. It probably would have been much cheaper too.

Bond has been a trend follower ever since the 1970s.

Live and Let Die - Blaxploitation movies.
The Man With The Golden Gun - Kung Fu movies.
Moonraker - The trend set by Star Wars, which was admitted to have been the case.
GoldenEye==>Die Another Day - The generic over the top action films that set the standards for the 80s and 90s movies, even the early 2000s before Bourne showed up.
Casino Royale + Quantum of Solace = Jason Bourne
Skyfall - The Dark Knight Trilogy (aka Christopher Nolan)
Spectre - Same as above, only they remade the Winter Soldier story in that vein.

    Coincidence, sir? I think not.

The Bond/Jinx beach scene is basically the equivalent of a porn film before the sex.

The dialogue is quite fun to re-enact though.

Wait till you get to the sex.
Halle Berry choked on her abocado in that scene and had to be heimliched by Brosnan, she nearly died.

You mean they aimed for really bad dialogue and one-liners? Why would they aim to be bad?

That's what Brosnan said as he approached Halle from the rear.

I agree on Icarus, but I dig the whole gene therapy thing. I say cut the CGI, Icarus, Madonna Cameo, the invisible car, recast Jinx and cut the innuendos by about 92%, and you have a fine Bond film.

If it wasn't so absurd I could dig it. like I said, just give the original actor prosthetic makeup to look different and maybe dub his voice or have him change it a bit, It would work. I just can't buy in Bond's world that a North Korean man can get some magic surgery to be changed completely into a whole new man. Star Trek sure, but it just breaks my suspension of disbelief too far.

I seriously don't believe the finished film is what they envisioned! And I also believe it contributed hugely to Babs and Wilson putting everything on hold while they had a serious rethink about what direction the series was going! Even Brossa claimed at the time, that the Producers didn't know where to go next! Little did he know that future plans didn't include him!

If you want a cartoonish, lowest-common-denominator-pleasing cheesefest then DAD is perfect. If you want a decent, intelligent, grounded spy thriller DAD is a steaming turd.

To this day I regret spending money to see it at the cinema!
