His music worked not only as great Bond music, but as great music in general that's still beautiful to listen to.
Not to be critical of the other Bond composers but most if not all of their scores feel dated now.
I know the song isn't liked much by most Bond fans but it was different to all the Bond songs before it.
"I'm gonna die... another day."
AVTAK is certainly not Rogers finest hour, but it has a great villain, great music, (and theme by Duran Duran!) and at least 3 solid set pieces (Steeplechase, mine flood, and the terrific climax on the Golden Gate Bridge!), not forgetting the great Patrick Macnee! That's a hell of a lot more recommendations I can make than I can for the diabolical DAD!
Hmmm SF no.....TLD damn yes...
Up steps the Daltonator
DAD is fun in the same way that getting a brick through the windscreen on the M1 at 70 mph is fun.
DAD is actually the antithesis of fun.
Anyone who actually finds DAD 'fun' desperately needs a creative refresh
It represents everything that is worst about EON sadly.
More like a bridge through the windscreen at 70mph you mean surely? (For those of you not from the UK that's called topical humour)
Methinks the lady doth protest too much!
You've posted this notion that people are entitled to enjoy DAD numerous times now. Why so defensive if it's so good?
I don't think it's an age issue as I'm no selfie taking, 1D listening, Pokemon Go playing young whippersnapper myself but I would certainly consider someone who doesn't think DAD is the nadir of the series not to have much of a clue on matters Bondian.
Well if the hat fits...
Sorry mate - I don't make the rules.
@Birdelson is one of the few original fans we have on here and in his posts has demonstrated a lot of knowledge of the films and books, and we're calling him clueless because he can find some enjoyment in DAD? Does that not seem like a bit much to you?
This thread (which you started) is about finding the positives in DAD. I'm not sure why you'd start a thread called "DAD is actually pretty good" and then act perplexed as to why people who enjoy the film (or bits of it) are speaking up.
I left the cinema feeling angry after Die Another Day. I couldn't believe that a film with so much promise and potential was arguably the series low point. Unlike a lot of people on here apparently (but I think there might be some revisionist history going on as it seems a lot of people are now piping up and saying "well I never liked him", but Brosnan was pretty popular at the time iirc) I was a fan of the Brosnan era and, particuarly after TWINE, I had high hopes for DAD. Which made the end product all the more disappointing.
But y'know what? That was 14 years ago, over a decade ago, and we've had some great Bond films since. So can we not just get over it? Everyone is entitled to their opinion but what annoys me is how any attempt at discussion about DAD devolves into endless bitching. Yes, Jinx is shit, the CGI is shit, the space lazer gene therapy plot is shit, we know. We've all seen the film multiple times at this point. So wouldn't it be more fun now to accept the faults try and find stuff to enjoy in it, just try to make the best of it? (y'know, the entire purpose of this thread). Or we could just ridicule those who do, whatever.
It just irritates me when it kills interesting discussion. For example, someone once started a rather interesting thread about the planned Jinx spin off. Based on comments by the writers, the disappointment of those involved when it was canned and the concept of it being a film focusing on her early career, they theorised that it was envisioned by the EON crew as a way to get away from the excess of Bond at the time and could have been perhaps been similar to what we got in CR. Maybe some scenes even found their way into CR. Instead of discussing this further and pointing to bits which may or may not have been hangovers from the Jinx script, what was the response? "No it would have been shit everything about DAD is shit Jinx is shit blah blah blah blah". An interesting thread devolving into yet another bitch fest.
This thread is about what we enjoyed in DAD. That's the point. So I'm not sure why we're insulting and ridiculing those who do enjoy it, and I'm not sure why some members are using it as a "just watched DAD, god it's so terrible am I right guys" thread (there's the last Bond you watched thread for that). Some of us would actually like to discuss the films merits because it makes a nice change as opposed to going over the bad bits for the millionth time.
So in the spirit of that, I agree @jake24 that General Moon is one of the films highlights. He's very authorative and convincing. In fact I think the film has a couple of interesting minor characters. I like Micheal Madsen in his small part and I like Bond's Cuban contact and the Chinese intelligence guy. In the case of those last two, it's not so much that the characters or performance are anything particuarly special, I just like it when there are colourful minor characters like that who Bond knows from previous unseen adventures (Zukofsky is another example). Makes him seem very mysterious and enigmatic, like there's this whole world he has access to that we've only scraped the surface of in the 20 odd missions we've seen.
According to the fabulous tome, "Some Kind of Hero" a lot of ideas for the Jinx spin off were recycled for Casino Royale.
DAD has always been the brunt of it (and rightly so imho) and SP has recently taken over (which is as expected as well, given it's the most recent film).
You make some valid points and I can admit to finding some enjoyment myself in DAD whilst still being fully aware that it is by far the worst film of the series.
In my initial post all I managed to find were a few nuggets of greatness in the overall mess and this was the point of the thread. It wasnt intended to give people free reign to do some sort of revisionist appreciation of the film as a whole.
Perhaps I should have been more clear. This was never meant to be a DAD as a whole appreciation thread, more a picking through the pool of vomit to find the juicy kernels of sweetcorn.
Indeed if your'e going to take offence at things some gobby prick like me (apparently I'm only the 4th biggest c**t on here - but my legal team will be challenging that decision) say on the internet dont go on the internet because you're going to spend the majority of your time being offended.
You're correct about English piss ripping not always being understood by foreigners though.
As always Partridge said it best 'The trouble with you Americans is you havent got a sophisticated sense of humour. Have you heard of 'Robin's Nest'?'
People have been murdered for harbouring much less egregious opinions. You've been warned, mate.
Bring it on @RC7...TLD can kiss my Walther PPK arse ,..... ;)
He's currently being punished for his sins by watching West Brom v Boro. You think TLD is less entertaining than DAD do you barryt007? Well I'd have you watching that match for eternity to teach you just what boring really is.
Bet he's pining for TLD right now. Even the Rosika Miklos scene is entertaining compared to watching a Tony Pulis team.
If you genuinely think DAD is superior to TLD then I'll have to be checking the going rates at Dignitas. Might have to do some crowdfunding, but the flight is on me.
Hahaha i agree,i think im losing the plot.....a bit like DAD..its this WBA v Boro footie match..i think it has actually driven me insane its so boring...
Everytime an ill-informed miscreant bashes Dalton and/or TLD/LTK... well, i'm sat alone, deep in thought, pondering Bond 17 when my signal is shined up into the sky...
;)
Happy to chip in there. It would be an act of kindness.
(Although if Dignitas is proving outside your budget I'm happy to help out with a rusty axe for a tenth of the cost.)
Except you mate this ludicrous claim last night mate so cant really blame a Pulis snoreathon on your mental aberration.
True,so i say once more...TLD is a crock of mushy,sentimental Dalton,bollocks...clear enough ? unlike the brilliant LTK...
If people cant accept my view then those people can just f*ck off....
I've been around too long on here and as a Bond fan to give a shit what people think ... ;)
I get why it's down there at the bottom mostly together with DAF or AVTAK or TMWTGG in most rankings on forums.
There is not one single Bond movie that deserves a lower rating than 6.5 (out of 10).
There has yet to come a Bond movie that is a failure artistically or commercially. And it probably never will come.
Being a huge Bond fan now for 33 years I love all the films. There's a film for every mood and DAD certainly applies.
I recall vividly my reactions the first time seeing this in the cinema. For one I was thrilled Arnold had attempted a more traditional sounding gunbarrel theme. That was such a huge bonus in my opinion after his lacklustre TND and TWINE GB's I didn't even let the bullet bother me. I thought the PTS was pretty solid, though having Pierce behind the wheel of another vehicle during a chase was beginning to become cliched. I figured by B21, they'd have to figure something else out for him to do in the opening. Also having a villain called Col Moon, pretty much pis$ed all over the possibility of Eon EVER doing an adaptation of Colonel Sun.
I felt Pierce looked great in this film. I know many say this was his Sean in DAF, but to me he actually needed that extra bulk. In GE I always felt he was too lean. He's not Don Knotts by any stretch, but it's more believable in DAD when he knocks out the guy in Cuba. Also his haircut here reminded me of Dick Orme's from the novel covers.
The Cuba scenes did remind me of classic Connery, DR NO and TB and by that point I pretty much felt this film was no better or worse than the other Brosnan entries.
I had seen DAD with a huge group of friends, peers, etc and asked what every one thought. One guy said "it was gooooooooood! It reminded me of Sean Connery." Another said " I think this was the worst James Bond film ever made".
To this day I still agree.
Flat Earthers have been saying the same thing for years, mate.
Well there we go then...
