Just imagine Lee Tamahori in the place of Toby Stephens during his final fight with Bond on the aeroplane and suddenly the film becomes a masterpiece ;)
I honestly thought at the time that Tamahori was Japanese or something when the film was released, but originates from New Zealand

I wasn't really aware of any of his work before Bond, maybe he just should of steered clear of this area in hindsight

On the top of my head: Schindler's List, Senna, The Mission (1999 hong kong film), Full Monty, Trainspotting, Raiders of the lost ark, Up, Saving Private ryan.....

Holly crap!?! We do share some tastes. Some, not all. But still...
Only one more question out of topic, as a Raiders fan, what did you think of Indy4? Oh, and Senna is just awesome. And so is The Mission (the other one...1986)

No, giving credit is what HapHazard does. He's certainly no Brosnan fan but he's certainly a little fairer than you are ;) You're just...harsh :p

If Brosnan bashing was an olympic sport, Luds would be undefeated since 1995... :-B

And you probably dont remember the Croupier years. Luds was unstoppable. BMW videos and all. Ah, good old times.

When it comes to Bond, I'm one of those fans who enjoy both straight-up spy thrillers (FRWL/FYEO/CR) and over-the-top action-fantasy adventures (MR/DAD) equally. That way I get the best of both worlds. Strictly as a Bond film, DAD is just okay- but as an action adventure on it's own, I find it highly enjoyable. I can watch it any day of the week- and my fave film is FRWL!

I see actonsteve is still blinded by his total love of Craig and CR... I feel sorry for him... oh well I'll pop in DAD in the dvd player today and enjoy a real, proper, entertaining Bond film with a real and proper Flemingesque performance from a real and proper Bond actor.
I feel that in the same token you are bought by the comedy filled Bonds and are blinded by your love of Moore too much to see greatness in serious Bond films like CR and QoS. You may want a so called "proper" Bond film, enjoy Moore all you want, but I like my films(especially Bond) serious and ones that I couldn't show to an eight year old.

Brosnan's performance in DAD was his most comfortable outing in the role.. i mean it's obvious that he looked more relaxed as Bond than in previous films.... but i would hardly call it Fleming-esque....... was it at times? sure - but so was Moore in a handful of scenes, and he was the farthest removed from being the Fleming Bond than any of the actors....... Brosnan had his moments like Moore, but what is left after those moments, is far removed from anything resembling the Bond that I read in the Fleming novels...... and his performance hardly justifies giving this film a passing grade. - because nothing else about it (save for Arnold's score) was any good.

I respect everyone's opinion on here, and their love for certain Bond films over others.... but when i think of "proper Bond films", i think of From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, The Living Daylights...... some how, for me, Die Another Day just doesn't fit anywhere in those films...

There's nothing wrong in being able to show a Bond film to an 8 year old. In fact I think its quite sweet for kids being allowed to see a Bond film alongside their parents. Most people get their initial exposure to Bond as a kid.

IMO Moore in TMWTGG is one of the most flemingesque performance in the franchise. About Brosnan in DAD - he's acting in that film is simply a huge middle finger directed at TWINE, where he acted all melodramatic, wussy, like a 'trained theater actor' with all his gesture and hilarious (if not cringe-worthy) body-language... Frankly I much prefer the much more serious, fun, no-bullsh*t acting he gave in DAD over TWINE anyday. Brosnan seemed much more relax, strong, authoritary in DAD than his OTT performance in TWINE.

With TWINE for me he's good in some scenes (the PTS, the castle, the construction site, the casino, the underground mine, killing Electra but REALLY bad in some other scenes.

Watch Haphazard's review for a good analysis of his performance.

If you can ignore a good bit, DAD is real enjoyable. I love the first half of the film, especially the sword fight and the whole bit in Cuba. It does get too cheesy for me from there on out, but I can still sit down and watch it without too many problems.

Nothing, I'm saying it's un-Bond to the extreme. A totally OTT reaction from 007.

I didn't think it was all that bad but there we go.

Bond wouldn't say "I have no armour left, you've stripped it from me" either but no one cares about that.
