Here's why TMWTGG is my favourite Moore film:
There were no Road Runner deaths like Kananga, no 'destroy the world' plots, or impossible henchmen like Jaws, no parrots talking to the PM or tuk-tuk tennis fights, and no shrieking endlessly of Bond's first name.

We got a silly Sheriff acting racist, a stupid bimbo played for laughs, a ludicrous martial arts exhibition out of nowhere, a henchman more comic than menacing (etc, etc...) instead though...
NONE of which distracts me like the impossible s**t or Sutton's vocals that I listed above.
    :D
Look- I love FYEO & OP, I have fun with LALD & TSWLM, but TMWTGG just has a special place in my heart as a truly bizarre, yet curiously grounded Moore Bond.
    For ME.

Though I have a few problems with THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, every aspect that @jobo criticizes are parts that I love.
The most typically & actively criticized aspect of TMWTGG? The slide whistle.
    Case closed.

I love TMWTGG too (and will elaborate when I do a post-Bondathon writeup).

Having just watched it, my #1 reason for loving it: Roger Moore. He is absolutely brilliant in it. It's his most tough as nails portrayal as Bond (not FYEO, imho), and even though the film has its problems (which I don't condone), and even though it's quirky, it is definitely entertaining.

Moore, Lee and Adams make it watchable but that's it.

One of the lowest points of the entire franchise, if not the lowest.

Who is responsible for the slide whistle?

The producers. Barry resisted it. Still, if that were the worst thing in the franchise, I'd be ridiculously happy.

@Thunderfinger and @BondJasonBond006 do ex-military guys check all the exits when entering a room? Almost every characters with military background explain that in movies/tv series, so I wonder if it's true.

Perhaps special forces types do. Most don't. Why would an air force mechanic needs to check exits when entering a building?

Worse than DAD's CGI surfing or MR's pigeon's double take?

I had always heard the opposite (that Barry insisted on adding the slide whistle and later regretted it), and I'd like to get some confirmation.
My readings were that Barry regretted folding & adding it in. But it's late, and I'm watching my NEW BD of the movie now. I'll try to find solid confirmation of it tomorrow.

Ugh the slide whistle... Single-handedly one of the worst parts of that movie.

Golden Gun does go a bit too far into Carry On territory at times for my taste.

(slide whistle and Britt Eckland's arse activating the Solex)

I don't mind some of the OTT humour in Moore's films, but in GG's case I don't find it funny. Just irritating...and I consider the (good) Carry On films a guilty pleasure.

I just found a quote from Barry that makes it seem like he added it of his own volition just before he finished the score and that it was a bad call on his part due in part to being tired of rushing on the project. So I guess I just remembered it wrong.

It's pretty terrible. Still, in my most recent viewing I enjoyed the movie more than I had in the past, slide whistle and all.

  • DAF turned darker than intended, on the other hand FYEO was much lighter, given the fact they wanted a more serious approach after MR.

Let's just say all those that you mentioned belong in the same place. ;)

I'm not sure I follow, especially regarding your DAF comment.

There is some comedy in DAF but I have the feeling that the atmosphere is a little dark, comparing it to the Moore films. Maybe it's the cinematography, the colors.

You and I both. It's my second favorite Brosnan entry and rocks every single time I see it.

It's inside my top 10 (#10). I have so few problems with it compared to most...

Similarly for me, it was my favorite Bond until Casino Royale. At that point I had only seen a few of the entries predating GoldenEye.

That's about where I have it too (12th recently, up from 16th).

Brosnan is comfortable in the role, he definitely broke in the suit. The action is captivating and there is an abundance of nifty gadgets. The premise of the story is strong in the first half. I fancy Elektra King as both the Bond girl and the villain. Judi Dench has an abundance of screen time. Zukovsky makes a return appearance. Those are all positives for me.

Tomorrow Never Lies would have been a better title. But almost too good for the movie.

But it suffers the same problem in that it doesn't make any sense. What does "Tomorrow never lies" even mean? Even with DAD I understand the sentiment.

Tomorrow, The newspaper creates it's own truths by setting up stories and coming out 24 hours before everyone else. Tomorrow never lies. ;) It certainly did die though.

I think that's a little too esoteric. But if they made "Tomorrow“ more of a centerpiece of the movie it would work.
