Everton Football Club have announced the appointment of Dame Judi Dench as honorary patron of their official charity, Everton in the Community.

The 77-year-old has accepted an ambassadorial role for Everton in the Community and will use her high profile stature to promote the good work of the charity.

Evertonian Dame Judi said: “I was truly honoured to be offered the chance to become involved in such a special charity and at my football club. I am excited to be able to represent a charity, which continues to push social boundaries and help so many people across Merseyside and beyond. The work the staff undertake on a daily basis is humbling and an inspiration to us all.”

She will take up her latest role immediately at the charity, which in the last year has scooped national and international recognition for its work.

Blues chairman Bill Kenwright said: “We are thrilled to welcome Dame Judi on board to our fantastic award winning Everton in the Community scheme. Judi’s husband Michael was an avid ‘Blue’ and her grandson Sam is following in his footsteps. Judi keeps up with our progress from wherever her work takes her. She is a trusted friend and colleague and will be a fantastic asset to the charity.”
