How does Pep Guardiola feel about his ambassador role for Qatar ...

... acting as a paid ambassador for Qatar's World Cup. How does he feel about that now, following revelations about the Gulf state's use of its controversial labour laws to restrict the rights of the immigrant labourers building its new stadiums, and the apparent indifference to dozens of deaths on the project?

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/feb/26/pep-guardiola-qatar-world-cup-yellow-ribbon

In 2015, The Washington Post claimed there had been as many as 1,200 deaths at World Cup sites in Qatar - a highly disputed figure that has not been updated since. Campaigners fear the total death toll could reach 4,000 before the tournament kicks off, reports the Daily Mirror.

In 2016, Amnesty raised the alarm about conditions for workers refurbishing the stadium, and accused Qatar of using forced labour.

    http://www.theweek.co.uk/qatar-2022-world-cup/91992/british-worker-fell-to-death-at-inherently-unsafe-qatar-world-cup-stadium

Hopefully Qatar loses the World cup.

St. Pep who can do no wrong, with his yellow ribbon speaking up for the poor Catalan people. This is what happens when you set yourself up as the voice of morality - you start getting scrutinised and anyone happy to be in bed with these dodgy Qatar twats loses all claim on the moral high ground.

No chance of Qatar losing it though as too many people in FIFA would have to give back too much money.

This is FIFA remember how much of a f**k do you think anyone in Zurich gives about some immigrants dying of heatstroke lumping bricks in 50C?

4000 dead? The FIFA Exco would sign off on the holocaust as long as it kept the money rolling in.

That Qatar appointment is even more disgraceful than Greece winning Euro 2004. Which says a lot. Even more so because it is so bloody obvious. Let's give the WC to a country with no football tradition and not a single World Cup finals to its name, but with enough money to fill the entire surface area of the Iberian peninsula.

It is not only that they have no football tradition, even worse is the fact that the country is completely unsuited to host such a tournament in every way! The whole world knows what is going on. Yet somehow, there seems to be nothing that can be done...

How can you say something like that about Greece winning Euro 2004 ?
    Are you serious ?

Pep Guardiola has been fined £20,000 and warned as to his future conduct for wearing a yellow ribbon on the sidelines.

Of course I’m serious. When Greece won the Euros, attractive football lost.

Not because it was Greece, I like Greece and have a lot of Greek friends.

But the football they brought was disgraceful. Eliminating Zidane’s France, Nedved’s Czech Republic and Ronaldo’s Portugal just by making one lucky setpiece goal each time and parking the bus all bloody game long.

Now if you choose to play counter-attacking football that’s fine. Look how masterful Juve eliminated Spurs this week. But Juve has a plan, once they get the ball they start passing the ball around as quickly and efficiently as possible to create a fabulous, well-crafted counter-attack.

However, having no other plan than hoping for one corner kick and for the rest of the game kicking the ball in the stands or causing injuries is indeed disgraceful.

Now you can call that football but I won’t, thank you very much.

I'm hoping at least Liverpool scores - only for the points in my FPL team! Going into this game with a combination of Salah, Firmino, and van Dijk doesn't make me expect a lot of points, that's for sure.

It's like comparing chalk and cheese..........

Just woke up and had a dream it was 2-0 - and not in a good way.

Can't see that to be honest because if the Scum open up enough to get two we will score as well.

But I'd go for a bus parking masterclass if I had to bet too - Utd don't need to win they just need to draw and they've got a manager who knows that and is fine about doing whatever he has to to achieve it.

    Utter drivel.

Yes it was awful to watch and they were extremely jammy to get away with as if at any point they conceded a goal they were doomed as they had no real means of attacking teams and putting pressure on their goal.

I remember the Czechs (who were playing really well in the tournament) absolutely destroying them for 30 mins. I don't think I've ever seen a team so rampant. But they didn't score.

You can bemoan Nedved or Zidane not winning it all you like but if you can't beat what's in front of you you won't. That's not Greece's fault or their problem. They had a strategy that worked for them. Yes it relied on a lot of luck but fair play to them - they rolled the dice and it came up double 6.

It's just footballing snobbery to slag them off though as we all know they were shit and had a squad of journeymen players and didn't even deserve to be at the tournament let alone win it. But they did so they render any bleating about the death of football or the tragedy of Nedved meaningless by just slapping their medals on the table.

If only could England could play like that. We're shit enough just need to get the luck aspect nailed and we're there.

I see what you mean. I don't expect a lot of goals for sure. United will play cautiously, and most likely so will Liverpool. One mistake ør well timed counter attack at either end could decide the tie. But I have a little more faith in Liverpool's effectivity up front than United's.

They might emulate their style but they'll never be Barca. CIty are just a midtable yoyo club who got lucky in the rich owner lottery.

@jobo's experience in the week where they were struggling to fill the stadium in the knockout stages of the CL shows just how entitled their fans have become so quickly:

'It's only Basel I'm not going to watch that rubbish. We're the mighty Man City'

Well with over 100 games in the CL the likes of Basel deserve a bit of respect from a nouveau riche Johnny come lately club. We were having a debate about European royalty a few pages ago. City are basically a toothless peasant with the Black Death that European royalty steps over in the street.

They are so far behind Barca in so many ways it's embarrassing to even compare the two. Yes they're selling out now but dont forget all those years when they classily never had a shirt sponsor and compare that with how eager City were to drop their trousers when the sheikh rolled into town.

City's motto might as well be - 'Less than a club'.

Prized Or Poison - What Are Manchester City ?

There is a dual-development unfolding at Man City. Human Rights Watch warned as far back as 2013 that the UAE-elite envisioned Manchester City as an image-cleansing tool.

Human rights researcher Nicholas McGeehan recently pointed out Mansour's brother, Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, controls Abu Dhabi, the wealthiest of the seven emirates that constitute UAE.

On the subject of Greece 2004, I don't think it was worse than Portugals Euro campaign in 2016. Greece at least had to eliminate some very strong teams on their way to the final. Portugal on the other hand by incredible luck were propelled to the final with the easiest route in Euro Cup history! Yet they still had to play defensive football and barely scrape through against sides like Poland and Wales, and that after finishing 3rd (!!) in the easiest group of the tournament, finishing behind Iceland and Hungary, a result which by normal rules would have sent them home packing...

Would have to broadly agree with that.

Hungary, Austria, Iceland, Croatia, Poland, Wales for a place in the final? Who wouldn't bite your hand off for that draw?

Although if we're talking piss easy routes to the final Germany in 02 is also tough to beat: Ireland, Cameroon, Saudi (the worst performance I ever saw in a world cup), Paraguay, USA and South Korea.

If England were ever handed draws like that then we might even have a chance of getting to the final (apart from Iceland. And USA).

That said credit to Portugal for doing just enough. That's what win tournaments. World Cups and Euros are littered with amazing teams that didn't win it (Hungary 54, Holland 74, 78, 00, Brazil 82) whilst workmanlike teams just kept getting over the line (Italy in every tournament).

Not getting knocked out - that's what wins trophies and Portugal didn't and nor did Greece so fair play to them.

Call me bitter or overly principled, but for me finishing third in your group is the same as getting knocked out! I refuse to fully accept UEFA's new regulations that made Euro 2016 the most boring and frustrating tournament I can recall in my life time...

I can see both sides of this. But having Ronaldo knocked out early would be a memory to cherish for years to come. Sorry, I know he scores in the important matches and all that, but I just can't stand the guy.

It's a very poor format I'll grant you that. Portugal got through without winning a game in the group. That shouldn't happen.

Mind you we've seen nothing yet:

I take it you are aware that parking the bus contravenes no laws of the game?

Thats why football is the best sport - there's not just one way to skin a cat.

I thought Juve (and Chielini in particular) were spectacular in defence on Wednesday and I found their resolute bus parking in the last 20 fascinating to watch.
