Michael and Lucy Oliver: Uefa 'strongly condemns' abuse after Gianluigi Buffon criticism
Uefa says it "strongly condemns" the abuse received by Premier League referee Michael Oliver and wife Lucy.
Michael Oliver awarded a last-minute penalty as Real Madrid knocked Juventus out of the Champions League last week and was criticised by keeper Gianluigi Buffon and some Italian media.
BBC Sport understands Lucy Oliver - a Women's Super League referee who also officiates men's non-league football - received threatening texts after her mobile number was posted on social media following the game.
"Uefa strongly condemns the abuse directed at Michael Oliver and his wife," said European football's governing body in a statement to BBC Sport.
"We have been in contact with them to offer our support and we trust the relevant authorities to take action against those individuals who have behaved inappropriately both on and off social media."
In a dramatic end to the match at the Bernabeu in Madrid on Wednesday, Juventus captain Buffon was sent off for confronting Oliver over the 93rd-minute penalty decision.
Buffon later told media the English official had a "bag of rubbish for a heart" and defended his comments on Saturday, saying he "stands by all of it".
Following the match, Lucy Oliver's Twitter account was targeted by some supporters posting abusive messages.
"We are aware of threatening messages being posted on social media," a Northumbria police spokesperson told BBC Sport.
"This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and those writing the messages need to be aware that they could be committing a criminal offence.
"Neighbourhood officers are in touch with the victims in this case to offer them support and ensure any further offences are reported to police."
A spokesperson for Twitter confirmed that several offensive tweets reported by Lucy Oliver have been removed for violating its abuse policy.
Ref Support chief exec Martin Cassidy said his organisation has also been in touch with Lucy Oliver to offer its support.
"I know other people are supporting her, she's always been a dynamic educator and a good referee," he said.

There were 3 officials there and none of them saw it....pathetic,and untrue.
They bottled it.
It's incredible. So obvious from that angle Dean himself was standing.
Michael McIntyre at Amex Stadium too, I see.
Enjoying LA, it looks like!
_______________
I don't generally mind self bragging that much. The first three narcisistic comments are fun. The next two are ok. Then when we come to the sixth, it's getting tired and predictable. By the seventh I feel like saying "ok, that's enough, don't ruin this". By the eigth one I start to feel sick. I do have my limit after all... But it all adds to the marketing image and myth I guess...
When you look at his showreel of epic goals they're mostly at a shite level - the dribble against the mighty NAC Breda, the overhead kick into an empty net against the even mightier England in a friendly, 40 yard volley into a practically empty net against the even mightier still LAFC. Yes he's won plenty of leagues by bullying shit teams and always AWOL at the business end of serious tournaments. At the end of the day he's just Le Tiss with a big gob ain't he?
Anyway in better news the last tranche of World Cup tickets just went on sale and I managed to get hold of a QF and and SF so a reasonable result.
Don't expect England to be there.
Zlatan have always been good at image building. The way he delivers those comments, although, comes more across as punchlines to me. Or a bit tongue-in-cheek, if you like. But Zlatan have always been like that. Seen a few interviews with Norwegian and Swedish interviewers over the years, and he seems more "natural" in those settings. He probably turns up his image/persona a few notches when abroad.
“After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season.
“I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years.
“I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.
“I want to thank the staff, the players, the Directors and the fans who make this club so special.
“I urge our fans to stand behind the team to finish on a high.
“To all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club.
"My love and support for ever.”
Arsene Wenger
It's for the best but I still feel sad and numb.
He's been at the club since I was 26...i'm now 48.
Bye old friend...lets hope those bloody players give you the send off you deserve and win the Europa League.
If this is not motivation enough for the group to perform in the remaining fixtures…
This will be a new experience for you for sure,Torg.
It's going to be a very interesting summer, and these players now have to realise that they are playing for their Arsenal careers, because when a new boss comes in most are going to be kicked out of the club.
The new Arsenal FC starts today.
No,apparantly its been in the pipeline a while.
Anchelotti,Vierra,Henry,Rodgers,Luis Enrique to name but a few.
Better late then never eh ? ;)
For all I've taken the piss out of the bloke, and this comes a good 5 years too late, he's always struck me as a decent, if blinkered, guy.
All things come to an end though. It's just a shame through his own stubbornness and the board's gutlessness in refusing to sack him that his legacy has been tarnished.
Just goes to show what the board's priorities are - 10 years of stagnation fine as long as he was finishing top 4. A couple of years off the CL gravy train and he's gone.
Whilst Kronke and Chips are in charge can't really see Arsenal getting anywhere and I can't see why a top tier manager would go there.
Rogers. why is he so hyped in the press? Celtic win their league by default each year anyway.
It's all on Kroenke & Co. You can blame Wenger for the results, but as anyone else, he'll try to hang on to his job as long as he can - and with the current ownership, he certainly has had the opportunity to do so. The only things Arsenal can attract a potential manager about, is life in London, a big (quite new) stadium, and a good salary (you'd expect). Owners are still there, though. That's reason enough for many to stay away.
