    Yup, think so. By then, we have actually something to talk someting about and might not - me included - get into arguments all the time. ;)

    Sorry to see you taking leave, @Germanlady

    I for one always appreciated your contributions. Hope to see you back 'round here soon!

    Man, I didn't see this coming. I need to go skip rocks on a lake or do that thing where you walk around with your hands on your head because my mind is completely blown. Germanlady? Leaving?? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo......

  • I'm not that bothered about it making a billion or beating Batman or Goldfinger. It's already the 2nd highest grossing film in the UK, and hopefully it'll beat Avatar and become no 1. That's enough to make me very happy.

    Which in my opinion is stupid, because if you HAVE to compare, inflation adjusted prices are good to compare, depending on the political situations at these times. Simply....mention these circumstances them and keep comparing....carefully.
    Well, your big list do not take into account any adjustment ! If you do the "usual" global inflation adjustment (the one I've just criticized about LALD :) ), #1 and #2 are inverted, Skyfall is still well behind Indy IV, and even more behind Indy III (which is #14 on your unadjusted list), Mission Impossible II is far up in the chart, well above CR and QOS, etc... Hence my comments about reading too much in all these figures...

    All this adjustment stuff and the millions of lists are confusing me.

    Lets just say SF has made lots of money but not as much as some 60s films, and maybe it wouldn't have overtaken more if you take into account the communist countries.
  • Of course little-young adult girls will go see Twilight. Whil us guys (Mainly James Bond fans) will see Skyfall.

    Damn, this just came in from BoxOfficeMojo:

    'THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2':
    $2,553,058 --> Monday
    $2,721,622 --> Tuesday (+6.5%)

    'SKYFALL':
    $1,923,566 --> Monday
    $2,274,157 --> Tuesday (+18.2)

    Now....I call that a very good holdover :-). Worldwide: $796,574,734 now. And now compared to the same 19-day period on Tuesday with these movies:

    'QUANTUM OF SOLACE' (At the same 19-day period on Tuesday):
    $887,504 --> Monday
    $922,898 --> Tuesday (+5%)

    'CASINO ROYALE' (At the same 19-day period on Tuesday):
    $1,036,657 --> Monday
    $1,112,818 --> Tuesday (+7.3%)

    If you compare the 19-day total in the USA of 'Skyfall' with 'Inception', it now stands:
    $225,341,845 to $201,725,628
    And remember, in the very end, 'Inception' earned $292,576,195 in the USA. So if this very good holdover for 'Skyfall' continues until 'The Hobbit' premieres, then equaling the USA figures from 'Inception' isn't a long shot anymore.

    I don't think anything I said is wrong. I don't think it'll beat TB and it might not beat GF so not as much as some (or one if it gets 2nd on one of the many lists) 60s films.

    Well, I think we first need to see the final worldwide figures, before we jump to conclusions, before we start comparing to TB and GF. I made that mistake b4 hehe ;-).

    Better is, to compare it with current day movies, like 'Inception'. By the way, what do you think of 'Skyfall' 's holdover?

    Personally, I think SF is doing really well to be making this much money at times when there have been other releases at the same time. Such a tribute to such a good film!

    It's success in America seems to be the biggest reason to cheer. At last Bond is up there will the big money earners.

    True. I would compare it to MI:GP, because they are both series films, released around autumn/winter, have comparable budgets, are in the same genre, and were both released in IMAX and 2D.

    BoxOfficeMojo is probably doing it because both films have a very British/European Oscar-heavy starcast. 'Inception': Tom Hardy (British), the late Pete Postlethwaite (British), Michael Caine (British), Cillian Murphy (Irish), Marion Cotillard (French). 'Skyfall': Daniel Craig (British), Ralph Fiennes (British), Judi Dench (British), Naomie Harris (British), Javier Bardem (Spanish), Berenice Marlohe (French). Not to mention two of the finest British directors: Christopher Nolan and Sam Mendes.

    Also, considering the plot, the theme, the drama/emotions, the atmosphere and the intelligence of the story, 'Skyfall' and 'Inception' are IMO much more than just Bond-esque films (I know, 'Skyfall' IS a Bond film, but it is IMO much more than just a Bond film). 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' was truly fun, but where 'Inception' and 'Skyfall' go further exploring depths and themes, 'M: I - GP' simply stops. Also, 'Inception' 's production budget was around $170 million back in 2010, if I'm not mistaken, closer to 'Skyfall' 's production budget. 'M: I - GP' was around $145 million in 2011.

    Moreover, and people tend to forget this, 'Skyfall' could be the first film from the Bond franchise since 'For Your Eyes Only' that will get several Oscar nominations. And not just an Oscar nomination for 'Best Song'. If I am right and the Oscar nominations come in, 'Skyfall' will stand very lonely in the top of 'Best Action/Espionage Thrillers', much more than just 'Best Bond films'. In comparison to 'Inception'? 'Inception' won four Oscars out of eight nominations. 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol'? Great entertainment, but no big nominations.

    Summarizing: Considering the production size, the expensive Oscar-heavy star cast, the money it brings in, the award outlook, the production cast (directors, cinematographers), the storyline/screenplay/plot and the overall intelligence and atmosphere of the movies, I'd rather compare 'Skyfall' with 'Inception', just like BoxOfficeMojo is doing. In fact, it deserves to be compared with 'Inception'.
  • Inception was 2 years ago and is completely different to SF. Yeah it has some Bond influence but that's about it. SF and Inception both have themes, so what? Lots of films do.

    Mission Impossible was more recent, it's a spy film that rivals the Bond films, it's a much better comparison imo.

    Let's agree to disagree then ;-). I tend to agree with BoxOfficeMojo :-).

    Fair enough, just find it strange. Based on that criteria you could equally compare it to The Prestige.

    Nah, not really. 'The Prestige' is a fantastic movie. Love it. But it's still a movie that's about two rivaling magicians, set in the 19th century. It isn't really set around one main character, who is struggling with himself and others (Inception's Cobb mission vs. Skyfall's Bond mission). 'Inception' IMO feels more Ian Fleming-esque than 'The Prestige.

    A nice picture comparison ;-):

    Cobb:

    VS.

    Bond:

    Now we are comparing, why not comparing 'Skyfall' with 'The Dark Knight' :-)?

    Personally I think there's much more merit in comparing it with TDK than Inception but that's just my opinion. Both are franchises built around a character of a similar background with similar motivations. Both films are considered re-inventions or re-imaginings of an already established icon.

    I agree RC7. Even BoxOfficeMojo could start doing that, once 'Skyfall' 's box office figures are nearing those of 'The Dark Knight'. Just a quick reminder: BOM started the 'Inception' vs. 'Skyfall' comparison only last week.

    And please, focus also on the positives I say about 'Skyfall'....

    But stop re-writing history please. The unpredicted $$$ of Skyfall makes you write comments about the past that are not reasonable, your vision is clouded by the financial success...

    No "big name" for Bond until now really ? What about one of the greatest British writer of the century, for instance ?

    Are you finished?? You read this? I stopped rewriting history!
    TheWizardOfIce is right. I thank him, he gave the correct historical facts. But let's not discuss that narcist director Michael Cimino. I mainly tried to say why 'Licence To Kill' was a flop from Bond standards. Yes. It earned itself back. Yes. It grossed 5 times the amount of its production budget.

    But in this movie business, my sole opinion is that Bond should crush all other franchises. It should be, it should always be the trendsetting standard for other action/spy franchises.

    Still, I am entitled to my own opinion. And this topic is about the box office figures of 'Skyfall'. I am entitled to say what I want to say. And I am entitled to give my own arguments for what I think could result in another box office smasher for Bond 24.

    You certainly are entitled to your opinion. Your critic needs to be reminded that you were the person who created the thread for Skyfall to reach $900m worldwide. It seemed very unlikely at the time. You were laughed at. You were mocked. But who had the last laugh? You were right and most people were wrong. You should be saluted for your insight, your good judgement, your enthusiasm AND for being right!

    So, don't pick on the great Gustav Graves, unlike his movie namesake, he is a legend.

    TBf to Inception it is behind Skyfall at this point as it open quiet a lot lower and had awesome holds due to amazing word of mouth. Inception OW= $65 mil Skyfall OW= $90 mil so Skyfall started a lot better although both have similar levels of good word of mouth but Skyfall is more front load due to being a sequel or part of a franchise. How is it nearing the Dark knight? Box office mojo is comparing domestic totals of Inception and Skyfall and Domestically the Dark Knight is in another league to Skyfall.

    Skyfall Domestic total=$223 mil USA
    The Dark Knight total=$533 mil USA

    In the US there is no comparison The Dark knight is on another level. Overseas The dark knight was not a mega hit like it was in the US so Skyfall is catching due to it's popularity OS. So worldwide it could beat The dark knight but no way Domestic.

    Better to compare the 19-day totals. There you will find it's perhaps not in the league of 'The Dark Knight', but it's certainly in the middle of the 'Christopher Nolan' league of films. And at this stage it's topping franchises like 'Die Hard', 'Mission: Impossible' and 'Jason Bourne' that were once threatening James Bond:

    $022 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'The International' (2009)
    $088 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'The Bourne Legacy' (2012)
    $103 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Live Free Or Die Hard' (2007)
    $108 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Taken 2' (2012)
    $118 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Casino Royale' (2006)
    $139 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows' (2009)
    $143 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Quantum Of Solace' (2008)
    $145 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' (2011)
    $151 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Batman Begins' (2005)
    $202 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Inception' (2010)
    $223 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'Skyfall' (2012)
    $363 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012)
    $406 mil USA = Domestic 19-day Total 'The Dark Knight' (2008)

    One more thing, 'Skyfall' might be at 1st spot again after next weekend :-).
