The domestic weekend gross is already there. Now we're at $300,937,000. Hopefully we can reach $303 when all is said and done.

Updates during the week would be great.

Looking at it, Bond 24 really does have it all to do - in every department.

So it opens in China today? I'm looking forward to seeing these numbers. Congratulations on reaching $300 million domestically, SF! Just a few more weeks until I have the blu-ray copy of you in my hands.

It is now FIFTH on the all-time list for Admissions and will probably overtake Star Wars for fourth place and has become the highest attended film ever that has only had one run.

    1. Gone With The Wind (1940) - 35 million
    2. The Sound Of Music (1965) - 30million
    3. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1938) - 28million
    4. Star Wars (1977) - 20.8 million
    5. Skyfall (2012) - 20.6 million
    6. Spring In Park Lane (1948) - 20.5 million
    7. Titanic (1998) - 20.3 million

First wave of audience reactions are out: some think it is good, while lots others think the pace is too slow without much actions. They dont like it ...
    WTF ...
Early day showings are starting. Not looking good ... :(

    Here comes the first number.
Skyfall midnight opening, RMB 1.7M with 43000 admissions from 900 screenings.
    I am so disappointed. :(
Early day shows are not good either. GA think it is (a little) boring.

Matinee performing for Skyfall is rather disappointing, if not awful ... :(
People keep saying the actions are too little.

Meh wom should mostly affect its legs. But disappointing midnight and OD ? must be the piracy ...

The BD version is out already.

I wouldn't be too downbeat. They kill baby girls in China. I wouldn't expect them to be culturally on the same page as the rest of us.

    Those admission stats are astonishing.

    Really?

43000/900 = 47 people per screening! On opening weekend. That is frankly shit.

Dont think we're going to get anywhere near MI:GP.

Glad those of us less pessimistic seem to have been proved right. It's a shame, but hardly unexpected in my eyes.

Why so much shock? It seems drama isn't as enticing as an action scene, and China must be full of people akin to that thinking. Many think they were (as a country) "trashed" in the film, which I still think is a garbage statement, but all that adds up to this result. It isn't Skyfall's fault for being a dramatic thriller, it's China's.

No surprise there. It's not fair to say "stupid Chinese, they only want action!" I think the problem is SF is advertised as more of a straight up action film than it actually is.

Take Life Of Pi, that did pretty well over there didn't it? I remember somebody on this thread saying so anyway. And I bet they weren't complaining about there not being enough action in that because it's not an action film. SF is a big budget blockbuster action film (or at least it's advertised as one and is part of a series that's full of them) and they expect more from big blockbusters over there.

I don't blame China. I know I'm repeating myself but this is a brilliant example so I'll say it again anyway- In 1985 while Roger Moore's stunt double was snowboarding down a mountain to the beachboys, Jackie Chan was hanging off a speeding bus by an umberella, electrocuting himself, destroying entire shanty towns, etc.

Skyfalls adverts focus on the action. It shows a bit from I think every action scene in the film.

If I was Chinese and I'd seen the adverts for SF I'd have probably thought it was a let down. Whereas if I was Chinese and I'd seen the adverts for Django or something I'd still have loved it.

But you can watch the advertisements and make the logical connection that it isn't just an all out action film.

The last update of the 'Spy/Action Movies-list' before the first gross figures from China come in. As of January 21th 2013, 'Skyfall' has now surpassed 'The Dark Knight Rises' excluding China's figures. It is expected that 'Skyfall' will at least turn in $90 Million after its run in China. I wouldn't be concerned so much about the first reviews.

'Skyfall' then would be the 5th most succesful movie of all time, when looking at BoxOfficeMojo's 'All Time Box Office'-list. Currently, the worldwide all time gross list looks like this:

    01) $2,782.3 -- 'Avatar' (2009)
    02) $2,185.4 -- 'Titanic' (1998)
    03) $1,511.8 -- 'Marvel's The Avengers' (2012)
    04) $1,328.1 -- 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2' (2011)
    05) $1,123.7 -- 'Transformers: Dark Of The Moon' (2011)
    07) $1,081.0 -- 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012)
    11) $1,038.5 -- 'James Bond - Skyfall' (2012)

Another important update, 'Skyfall' has now also beaten the for 2012 adjusted box office total of 'Thunderball', which stands at $1,037.2 Million. Depending on which calculations you use, 'Skyfall' is no doubt the most succesful Bond-film of all time.

Note for the reader: Take in mind that for, more or less, accurate comparisons, most of the below action/spy movies are produced in 1987 or later. Actually, most of them were produced after the 1990's. All movies in this list are 2D movies!

Furthermore, I have updated the list in such a way now, so that you can also use it as a 'watchlist'. Movies with a '▪' are part of a spy/actionhero movie franchise. Movies with a '▫' are rebooted movies or remakes. Movies with a '∞' are based on previous tv-series.

But you can watch the advertisements and make the logical connection that it isn't just an all out action film.

I didn't get that from the adverts at all. Like I said in my post, lots of the adverts were just crash, bang, smash.

I think he means until Skyfall can beat TDKR for BO intake.
  • Ah ok. I hope we get there soon too.

No, it's $85 million until it's fifth place on the all-time list, beating Transformers 3.

People are brainwashed in China anyway into thinking what the State tells em. Not enough action? Are they having a laugh? Maybe a well placed nuclear weapon in Tiananmen Square in Bond 24 will get em excited!

Yeah, and they won't even get to see that because it'll be cut for China's release.

Skyfall has surpassed anyone's expectations, everything that happens now is a bonus.

Indeed. I am not completely surprised by the first reviews of the Chinese. We knew already that 'Skyfall' is quite a political, multi-layered Bond film. In China they don't like that. I loved 'Ghost Protocol', but mainly for the action sequences.

We were like that too in the past though ;-). There comes a time that the Chinese citizens become more outspoken, more critical. For them 'Skyfall' is a new kind of experience. I can't blaim them.

What are you going on about?

My ex was Chinese and I've been to China myself and I hate to break it to you but it's not some wierd country that's been depriving the people of anything on the silver screen that isn't an explosion, nor is everybody over there just kung fu obsessed action junkies who can't appreciate the multi layered politically challenging brilliance of Skyfall.

All that's happened here is that they expect more from action scenes over there than SF delivers.

It seems like they can't when it's about them.

I don't get what you mean by this. Are you on about the goverment cutting bits of the film or the fact that the film isn't getting amazing reviews?

Also, although I thought the film was great, I was being sarcastic with that bit because I think a few people have been overrating the film with expressions like that.

I mean the former bit. When you cut parts of the film that include the villains entire motivation, you miss half of the film and all the understanding that goes with it. I find it absolutely stupid.
