Bond's mission was to retrieve the ATAC, not destroy it.
He destroys it at the end because its his only choice, as he says, they cant both have it.
It's difficult to tell much of anything from these pictures (the best resolutions I could find):

I don't have the time right now to put in my Blu-ray of the film to see if this is a clearer observation to make in high resolution, but I'm curious if anyone has found reason to believe this "legend"?
I know it's often said that Goldfinger is the special villain unconnected to SPECTRE in the 60s films, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service may even hint at his fellow conspirators on the Knox job being Draco's men, and not Blofeld's. Most confusing.

Hi Guys see here.
http://www.007collector.com/movie-prop-goldfinger-ring/
it is embossed with his initials.
=)) ^:)^
Knew it couldn't be a Spectre ring, as I don't believe you see a Spectre ring until TB, even though we know about Spectre From Dr No.
Yes, but the design actually looks like a specter, as in a ghost, and not an octopus:

It's interesting how the SPECTRE logo has changed over time, as seen in the top right of this page:

Good shout, at this time we didn't know him as Blofeld though, he was simply Number 1?
There is also the small fact that Auric Goldfinger was not a SPECTRE agent but self-employed.

That's a great find, @BMW_with_missiles, and something I hadn't really properly pondered before.
Yeah, I thought it was really interesting. I've always liked hearing stories about real life spies and comparing it to Bond. One show I particularly like is "Secret War" on AHC (formerly the Millitary Channel). Some WWII stories are pretty close to "one man saves the world" scenarios.
@BMW_with_missiles, you'll get a kick out of this crazy bastard, then, about as close to Bond as a man can get:

@0BradyM0Bondfanatic7 That. Was. Awesome!
I love reading stuff like that, because it's the perfect definition of "stranger than fiction." My best friend told me about Jack Churchill years back, and I thought he was making most of it up, as he's a storyteller by craft. Imagine my surprise when I found out the man and his legend was real!
Here's another hero for you to enjoy reading up on (the second man my friend told me about), a WWII soldier by the name of Simo Häyhä who has the most recorded sniper kills of any major war and who survived an explosive bullet hit to his left jaw from a Red Army soldier:

Wow! That's really impressive, especially considering he did it without a scope. One of my favorite WWII stories is the Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_heavy_water_sabotage
And his middle name would be Blue, of course.
No, red and white are the Danish colours.
Thanks.
Wow. That's some amazing family history you have.
