Sony dates MGM 'Carrie' remake for March 2013

Sony has set a March 15, 2013, opening for "Carrie," MGM's remake of Stephen King's horror tale.

Chloe Moretz will star in the title role that made Sissy Spacek famous in 1976. Directed by Kimberly Peirce ("Boys Don't Cry") and scripted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, story centers on a shy high-school student who uses her newly discovered telekinetic powers to exact revenge on her classmates.

MGM's planning to start shooting the reboot this summer. "Carrie" will open against Relativity's comedy "21 and Over," starring Justin Chon, Miles Teller and Sarah Wright.

MGM, which emerged from a pre-packaged bankruptcy in late 2010, has opted to partner with other distributors for its films. It tapped Sony last fall to distribute "Skyfall" and the following James Bond film.

    I am so NOT looking forward to this remake. I figured that they would have learned from earlier attempts of remaking Horrorclassic from the last century.

    It will undoubtely be CGI over good story.

    I agree, remakes and reboots galore. It's all Hollywood seem to do nowadays. For all Bond's faults, at least the series is always going forwards.

    I was briefly interested in this, when I heard Haley Bennett was in the running for the title role. I did like the 2002 movie, but I also love Angela Bettis, so I feel compelled to defend that Carrie. It was also written by Bryan Fuller, the man responsible for my favourite tv series, Dead Like Me.


    And I wouldn't call rebooting Bond, going fowards.

    No reboots with EON so far. \m/

    I remeber scaring the living daylights out of a group of youngsters with The Fog, and they went to see the remake in the movie later and all told me that while the effects looked better the story was just not that scary. And some of them still have nightmares about Carpenters' Halloween which is a perfect movie imho.

    Bond is always rebooted to an extent with each new actor anyway. At least we haven't seen the new stories before, they're not remakes.

    But it was never as blatant. Cubby never wanted to go back to Bonds roots, despite toying with the idea for TLD. Bond didn't have to be rebooted, even after DAD. Some remakes/reboots have been good. I liked the Friday The 13th reboot, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake wasn't as good as the original, but wasn't a total dung heap either. Then there's been some pointless examples too, Psycho '98 anyone?

    Reboots and remakes aren't the same things. Reboot is starting over. Remake is taking something from before and doing it again.

    Bond had avoided reboots until Casino Royale. That's not a criticism of the film, but it's definitely a reboot. On Her Majesty's Secret Service had a new actor but they went to great pains (particularly Binder's title sequence and Bond looking at things he had picked up from previous missions) to establish this was part of the same continuity. Moore's films occasionally referred to previous films (references to Tracy in The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only; there was a reference to From Russia With Love in a scene cut from A View To a Kill). Licence to Kill made a reference to Tracy.

    Casino Royale was starting over, hence a reboot. Doesn't make it bad, but it is a reboot.

    So GoldenEye fits the reboot category. There are no references to the past, bar Q.

    Just like with Casino Royale the only carry over is M.

    No, it's not a reboot because there is Q. Also, Bond refers to "your predecessor" when addressing M/Dench. Moneypenny is there, simply recast.

    I'm looking forward to this film. Look, Carrie's a classic, you can't make it any better. But I have somewhat different reasons. Chloe Moretz! She's a fine young actress and one whom I fancy seeing in a lot of roles. She impressed the hell out of me in Kick-Ass and proceeded to astonish me in Let Me In. She's more or less the chief reason I went to see Hugo and I make it my business to see everything she's in as long as she remains as good as she is now. Also, she's turning into a fine looking young lady. Another few years and I bet she'll be carrying some films all by herself.

    Lo and behold another damn sequel in operation, now there's a surprise :-L

    It'll only be a matter of time before every movie since the dawn of time will have a sequel or second addition etc

    Carrie is a masterpiece, anyone who's seen this 1976 shock fest will vehemently argue it should be left as it is, a one off release, never to be repeated or tried again, I could strangle people sometimes. Doesn't matter the caliber of people involved in this proposed release next year, the bottom line is, a sequel to a movie like this should never be attempted, they will never better it and will only embarrass themselves trying

    Having some technical difficulties again so will call it a night, but that's how I feel about it
