I'm surprised that people think Brosnan was a huge step down; he was quite a good bond in my opinion.
I'm surprised that men are surprised there are definitely Bond fans who are women and some like to discuss Bond, too. (Not surprised we are in the minority on a forum, though).
I'm surprised anyeone would think that GE was a poor Bond movie.
I'm suprised at the sometimes strong support for OHMSS.
I'm surprised that some dislike Casino Royale a lot.

Hate to say this but...I hate Dench's M, thought Brosnan was a very poor Moore clone and GE was substandard, I love OHMSS and I don't like CR. Haha as far removed as possible. Just out of interest....what is it about GE that seemse to have captivated people?

Well we all do vary in our opinions, that's natural. I thought Goldeneye was very well written, well paced beautifully shot, very good actors throughout, fun scenes and had spirit and charm. The only thing missing was the classic M. Norman Bond theme but it returned with TND because so many fans complained. I just think Goldeneye was a very good film with few flaws.

A few flaws? TRY NONE!!! Hahaha, to answer @SignedbyRogerMoore's original question, GoldenEye should not be questioned. It just is. End of discussion! :-bd

    Flaws:
    Worst soundtrack bar none
Worst first appearance by a Bond (upside down in a toilet)
Worst female villain (Famke Jansen doing a Cruella Deville impersonation)
Worst 'stunt' - the blue screen plane acrobatics - utterly unbelievable
Worst Bond - Brosnan comes across as a bad insurance salesman
Most derivative storyline - satelites, blah, blah, blah
Most irritating Bond trademark - adjusting tie like a slimy accountant

I could go on. And on....
  • I'm surprised Octopussy isn't as highly regarded as it should/deserves to be.

[t....what is it about GE that seemse to have captivated people?

Its a generational things. For some it was their first Bond movie at the cinema due to the six year gap. And even more weirdly, they discovered it by computer game.

Not the books mind. A zap blast computer game.

On a superficial level GE sort of ticks the Bond boxes, but precisely because of that it feels like movie-making by numbers. Martini - tick; Aston Martin - tick etc. etc. It actually always strikes me as being a movie made by people who think they know what a Bond movie is, but haven't actually immersed themselves in the heritage.

I was 7 when GE came out...and the game. Ah the game is the best game ever! So many great memories. Forget your Call of Duty and that, this game was immense! But it doesn't translate into my liking the movie, that I'll never do sufficiently

Thats pretty much my take. They were so nervous after the Dalton movies that they went overboard on the recognisability factor with GE so it became one of the most cliched ones.

My opinions that are different than the opinion of the most of the forum:
    I like Brosnan
    I like TWINE.
    I don't like TB.
  • @dragonsky, I can understand TB. Though I love it, it can get bogged down. To be honest, I wonder why I rate it so highly compared to other consistent films.

@Signed_By_Roger_Moore, yup, totally get where you're coming from with regards to TB; it's fun, classy and looks great, but is far from a great film and surely not among the best of the series because of its flaws. I too have always wondered then - not why they like it so much - but why so many on here rate it so highly. But there you go.

Anyhoo, why I really decided to post in this thread was to say that, for me, GE easily kicks, say, LTK all over the Bond ballpark. It's far and a way a superior Bond film, not least because it's better made and far more entertaining.

And, while I say that, I love the film series in general (especially its variety) and Fleming's original novels and have barely ever played any of the 'pooter games...

I have watched TB close to 50x probably and I still can't find one flaw. Perfection. :x

I was about eight or nine years old when my Mom returned home from shopping and had picked up GE on VHS for me. I must have re-watched it twenty or thirty times within the following few weeks, every chance I got.

It's just perfection to me, and I, too, cannot see any flaw in it. And yes, it's probably because this is the film that got me into Bond so heavily, but to this day, I don't think a Bond film will ever reach the beauty that GE gives me.

Also, I know we are all here because we are huge Bond fans - but there are some who deeply hate a certain actor as Bond, or a certain film in the series, and it surprises me that they can't surpass this, see the good points in him/it, and just watch it for what it is. So what if MR and DAD are far-fetched? They both still have very entertaining moments, and I always enjoy getting the chance to sit down and watch any of the films.

Perhaps what has surprised me more is the hate to Goldfinger o its low ranking according to a not small group of fans. As it was the first Bond movie I saw, I've always been very fond of GF, although I recognize its many flaws.
Some people are fixated on more "serious" films, hence the reverence the Craig films get in some parts. FRWL is the all-time Bond champ because it works as both "serious" and escapist. Everyone loves it.
For me, the Sean and Rog films are the best escapist fun.
    Craig-Bond is way too intense.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Minor continuity errors can be found in all the films.
TB remains perfect. I would offer the same consideration towards DN, FRWL, GF, YOLT and DAF, and even OHMSS despite the abscence of Sean and LALD and TMWTGG are pretty much flawless as well, despite their non-Seanness. Guy Hamilton crafts the best escapist Bond IMO. Spy and MR were a tad silly in parts, but otherwise pretty much perfect. Gilbert really knew how to put escapist Bond on screen.

The pacing rather stretches out the majesty of the picture. In fact, I'd love to see an extended director's cut with even more underwater footage, preferably in Imax. :D

I agree with the TB criticisms. Apart from the underwater fight scenes (which are excellent), I've never been a big fan. YOLT is far superior IMO. And DAF is a big, flabby flop. But 4 out of 6 hits for Sean is not bad.

Ah DAF is good fun, just a Roger Moore film, like AVTAK should have been Dalton's (with a very different story no doubt). Sean had 4 out of 6 hits...Roger had 5 out of 7 imo (TMWTGG and, as much as it pains me to say this, AVTAK didn't quite hit the high notes of the other Moore films)

Haha, I'm here, @00Beast! I saw you defending GE, and when I see that, I have to help you in defense. One day, some day, you and I shall meet up and have a GE marathon. GE, followed by GE, followed by GE with commentary, followed by GE.

Followed by the game, Wii and N64, followed by Rogue Agent (it's in the name and has Xenia), followed by VHS, Laserdisc, original footage reels, and whatever else there is!

You could drive a tank through the dealership and straighten your tie as you select and commandeer your automobile of choice!

@00Beast, or remove my belt, look at a gorgeous lady and tell her to "Trust me.", and then swing across the street, through the front glass windows, and take one.
