And Space Naziism isn't trying to control the world? Drax did want to control the world, he just wanted to rid the world of the people who didn't "belong" before he did. Drake, likely would have gone through with the same thing, he just did it backwards. Rather than building up his master race and then attacking, he wanted to attack first.
No. Nope. Not at all. Drake is far better a character than Goldfinger. I said on a different thread that the best parts of Goldfinger's performance was Gert Frobe's acting on the golf course and in the laser sequence. The best parts of Drake's performance is every time we see him up until the ending, where he wasn't as good.
Well, they had 23 years of hindsight to look at Moonraker and see what they did wrong in '79, that way they didn't replicate it too much. They also had 23 years more research into the space program and things like that. Why they decided to turn the Vanquish into the Lotus Esprite is beyond me, but at least it led to a cool level.
And why does the US government have Space Marines? Simple: there's teleportation technology on Mars, and there seems to be some sort of red, Hell-like dimension to go to...
Drake was crazy-prepared. He'd already stolen several, didn't even need the one that Bond retrieved, he just kept it in his castle in Austria (nowhere near the rest of the plot, I'll add) to fake out MI6 and the CIA.
In no way am I saying that's true, but, hey, it closes up a plot hole.
If you were to form your own Bond game with features from previous games. What it would be?
I would...
Derived from past games:
1-Reclaim the wardrobe from From Russia With Love.
2-The hand-to-hand combat system done manually from Everything or Nothing.
3-Have two inventory options (one for weapons and the other for gadgets) that is switchable through the press of a button a la Nightfire.
4-Have the feature to discover Easter Eggs, photograph secret files that upgrade the player's status, awarding him with unlocked material. Obviously from Nightfire and the two subsequent canonical games (which excludes GE:RA).
5-Have detachable silencers and suppressors on almost every weapon, ala Quantum of Solace.
6-Classic characters in multiplayer modes without making them special features. Like the ones in the EA's tenure and the original GE64.
7-Third-person cover system from Quantum of Solace.
New features:
1-Provide Bond with the likeness you prefer him to have. For instance, The Godfather II had a main character called Dominic. But, they gave you the option to decide how should he look like. I'd go for that feature on Bond, too.
2-Multiplayer should have more than just a deathmatch to it, more story mode levels like the Co-Operative option from No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In HARM's Way or Splinter Cell: Conviction. Or even better, Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection, the Xbox version of the game of RTCW.
3-Non-linear gameplay, giving the player more than one way to accomplish a level, sometimes each action we take changes the theme and the events of the storyline.
4-Switchable perspective with the push of a button, changing from third-person to first-person and vice versa, like in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Hitman: Contracts and Hitman: Blood Money. Does Star Wars: Jedi Knight series count?
That's all I have in mind, for now. Curious to see yours, chaps. :)
One feature I'd like to see back are car sections in the style of Blood Stone's. Those were quite thrilling and fun, especially when you get behind the wheel of a DB5.
As for new features, I'd love open environments to explore that you could plan out scenarios inside. Sort of having Bond scope the place out, gather intel and other reconnaissance before starting a mission in earnest. There could be all kinds of secrets to explore in an area, and if you missed intel the mission could change because of it. Say you had to scope out an event where an exchange between an arms dealer and a buyer was supposed to be held? Bond would walk around, surveying the situation, trying to listen in on any chatter. If you just so happened to miss a certain window or failed to hear a certain dialogue while one of your targets was walking off, you wouldn't hear valuable information that could assist you in completing the mission faster and with less danger.
Say one of the optional objects of a mission is to get a guard's key card. Only a select few of the detail at this event have one (which would be random every time you played), but if you are lucky enough to find out the guy that does have one, you can sneak into their HQ on site and find pictures of the buyer so that you can take him out before he and the arms dealer even meet. If you failed to do that, the buyer would be a hard boss fight later on in the level or something like that.
For another example, Bond could uncover blueprints of the building he's in and find a way to get to the designated meet spot before the buyer and arms dealer. While there, he could sabotage the gun caches with explosives, killing both men, or he could take some for himself or hide them completely to make the dealer think that the buyer or a member of his security team had stolen from him, creating unrest. The dealer may then shoot the buyer and complete the mission without you lifting a finger, depending on how you chose to manipulate the environment to do your bidding. Stuff of that sort would make the missions feel unique each time you played them depending on how well you followed your target or eavesdropped on conversations. The difference between completing a mission in ten minutes or thirty could all depend on how well you surveyed the room and planned for the consequences of each action you took.
I'd also love to see a fluid and responsive combat system in a Bond game that lends itself to the style of the Arkham games or Ubisoft's later Assassin's Creed games, like III and IV, that would allow you to do all kinds of great takedowns when things got hairy.
It'd also be cool if you could outfit Bond before a mission with any tech or gear you desire, completely customizing your experience. Say there's a mission where you have to get into a guy's villa under the cover of night to access some information on his hard drive. You could fit out Bond with night vision goggles, and all silenced weapons to do it completely covertly. Or, on the other side of that, you could go all out, giving him a kevlar vest and tons of ammunition to go in loud and aggressive. Judging by how you decided to prep for the mission, the experience would change.
If you went in quiet, as you reached your final mission checkpoint, a cinematic would play and Bond would pass the mission, but if you decided to go in guns blazing, the mission would continue on for a little longer as reinforcements who heard about your presence have come to eradicate you. There'd be real risk in deciding how to start missions, and the gear you'd pick could hinder you too. For example, if you gave Bond too many guys to carry or an armor that was too cumbersome, he'd slow considerably for the entire mission, right down to his running pace and the swiftness of his combat movements, making you more vulnerable. However, if you decided to go in bare with just a Walther and an automatic, you'd be much more mobile, but very compromised when it came to shoot-outs. Smart AI would also be a definite must with a game of this kind.
Damn, I really want to see these ideas of ours come to life now.
A cool Bond multiplayer would be if you could customize your own spy and play levels from the game with friends for an interesting co-op mode, where the variety in the single player game also appears in the multiplayer, causing you to really plan and attack an objective to get it done right.
A host of racing or battle arena type modes would be cool too, where you could pick classic Bond cars outfitted with guns and explosive ammo and go to town causing carnage against other players. Or you could simply race them against each other across a variety of environments, inspired by locations that you head to in the single player portion of the game.
I personally think it'd be cool to have a game set in the Bond universe where you aren't playing as Bond, but instead a spy you create yourself, right down to their eye color, height, skill sets and attire. You'd have your own office in the MI6 HQ that you could explore and ultimately receive missions straight from M. After you have a target/mission/objective and you've been debriefed about what awaits you, you could head to your office and plan how to tackle the tasks ahead any way you saw fit, kind of like how I imagined a single player Bond game playing out. You could start out as a rookie 00 with low skills but through fighting, practicing your shooting at the agency gun range, driving in high intensity situations and more, you would improve and gain more resources as well.
In a debriefing with M, he could send you to a vast number of places, be it Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Japan, and there could be a level set up for each location that is very open and gives you room to decide what way you'd like to proceed with completing a mission, again, like I envision for a SP Bond game. Now, judging on how successful you are on a mission, M could give you accolades or perks for your work, or provide you with more contacts in the field that you can meet randomly and who could aid you and make your efforts much easier. All these things could be subject to change if you did one thing wrong here or there, letting your cover be blown or if you compromised an asset by botching an operation.
For example, say you got sent to Italy to take out a target of some kind, but they're protected by a massive group of guards and sealed in tight in a compound there. M tells you that there's a contact in Venice who can help you cause a diversion with a team of his so that you can sneak in and kill the guy, if you choose the subtle route. The only problem is that you need to rescue the team from a jail/lockup first, in order to have enough forces to wage a full scale attack on the compound. The contact will go in with you on the rescue mission, but they may die at any time during the course of the operation, or, if you are caught while trying to save the men, they will all be killed and you will have nobody to launch an offensive with. If you do manage to free the captives with your contact, you will be able to move on the compound and get your target, but if you end up taking too long to start that mission, your plan will be exposed by the police investigating the breakout and the captives and your contact will die, leaving you with such a lack of resources that you may be forced to go in loud and aggressive, facing a massive amount of guards as you break into the compound. However, if you are able to keep your plans from being exposed, the operation would go off without a hitch, you'd sneak in and kill the target, and you'd gain more trust from M and an increased number of contacts to use in the field afterwards for your good work.
It'd be a bit unforgiving at times, but the challenge would offer heaps of replayability and strategy to the game.
while this is a third party saying it at least SOME one is still talking about James Bond in video games
We'll start at the beginning, Casino Royale. Not the film, the novel. It'll start off with Bond in the casino, playing some baccarat and other card games. The player will take control after the opening cutscene showing Bond watching Le Chiffre, they'll go around and play some card games, then after they accumulate some money, they can pay random people off to watch Le Chiffre. Edit: At the same time, Le Chiffre may or may not be paying off people to watch Bond, so there will need to be some sort of trust system in place. The player may not actually accumulate any information from Le Chiffre, depending on who's paid off.
The player will have the full run of the casino, can visit different floors, go to the hotel rooms, do everything in it that one can do in a real 50s casino. The plot of the game will closely follow the plot of the book, with a little leg room for gameplay. No arbitrary "gunfights for the sake of gunfights" like in Quantum of Solace or From Russia With Love. When Bond isn't playing games in the casino, he can sneak around, finding evidence linking Le Chiffre to his crimes and such.
There will be moments when he can listen in on Le Chiffre having conversations in his hotel room, and the like - real spy work, not the usual "sneak up, listen in, start shooting" like in most games. You can bug his phone, bug his walls, use Mathis to run errands, like finding ammunition (every now and then, a trigger has to be pulled) or retrieving information. You'll be able to do most of these things at any time (per story requirements), and the story will progress in the game as it does in the novel, not much more (maybe a little padding for the empty parts of the novel, but that's about it) and certainly no less.
They need to do this for every book in the series (up to Fleming, continuation authors would come if the idea becomes successful), plus or minus the short story collections (they'd be PSN/XBLA/WiiWare games, maybe), so that we get true adaptations of the novels. Base the characters' looks on their descriptions in the novels, not on the voice actors playing them, and then get voices who embody the characters.
I like playing as Craig's bond I just enjoy it more which is ironic as during the Brosnan era I preferred the more generic looking bond.
And I am also curious about that mobile game
That's called the "Activison Method", release the same game, on the same engine, every year, for the same price. Sadly, it works so well that Ubisoft copied it with Assassin's Creed.
Do you all think that is a possibility? There is no evidence either way to the future of Bond games but deep down I think Matt's comment affirmed a fear I think we all have had recently as James Bond gamers. With such a strong reputation built upon by GoldenEye N64 all those years ago and EA's pretty decent run after that we have never had to confront the possibility that Bond games might be seen as an unfavorable license. Even Harry Potter which has a huge starved fan base and new films on the horizon, has not had a new spin-off game continuation beyond I think a Kinect game.
My one hope, though very unlikely was that maybe Rare will announce they are working with Bond at E3. A re partnering after all these years.
Here it is. This is the last one where he talks about the future of Bond. Fun little series to watch. The credits also have a few jokes in them if you stick around long enough. Let me know what you guys think, positive and negative :)
Thanks for posting the link, anyway. Cheers. :)
