Care to share with us how you cracked it? I will type out the answers when I get home later.
Wow, I think it just clicked, actually. It involves them switching seats, and Gold = Goldfinger, and bronze = his suntan? If so, that's a damn good clue.
Same here, or one specific thing that became problematic by turning into three things, like three henchmen/three vehicles/etc.
Just have to echo this. I halfway gave up long ago.
I knew I had to make the clues challenging because @Birdleson would easily figure this one out, being from his favorite Bond film and all. Now, please take that for the ultimate compliment it is. I am in no way trying to rub it in or anything like that. It's a matter of respect.
Not to say that everyone else isn't extremely bright. You all certainly are. Again, it's not easy to come up with clues that keep you guys in the dark, as many of you are well aware. I put everything I had into this. I love this game and really enjoy being a part of our little community here. I wish I could have interacted with you more along the way, but I had to keep my poker face on.
I hope that wasn't too sappy. Okay, it's all yours Quantum man. You have people everywhere. Did they hack into my computer to get the answer? :))
1) My sanity is questionable.
If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, then Mr. Simmons is quite insane to keep playing cards with Goldfinger. He was very lucky that Bond intervened.
2) You couldn't tell it by looking at me now, but my clothes must have been absolutely filthy at one point.
"Goldfinger has been taking him to the cleaners every day for a week."
3) Twice is the only way to live, at least for the time being!
Simmons wants to "double" the stakes.
4) Allow myself to introduce myself.
Austin Willis was originally cast as Felix Leiter, but was switched to Simmons at the last minute. Leiter introduces the audience to Simmons when he is telling Bond about him.
5) Optimism brings disappointment, but excitement rules the day.
At first, he is optimistic that his luck will change, but then Goldfinger wins the first hand. However, excitement prevails when he starts winning his money back.
6) Can you find me in that book written by James Bond?
"That's his "pigeon" waiting for him now." I assume that everyone here knows exactly what book I'm talking about.
7) Someone greeted me by name during the course of the film.
Goldfinger greets him by name.
8) No vodka martinis for me.
Well, he doesn't have any, this is true. Although, the key word here was vodka. He exclaims "Gin!" when he finally wins a hand, so maybe he's a gin martini type of guy.
9) Does anyone have a ladder I can borrow?
He's ten grand "in the hole", so he's going to need a long ladder to climb out.
10) I arrived first.
We see him patiently waiting for Goldfinger to arrive.
11) There are many secrets I'm not privy to.
He obviously doesn't know that Goldfinger is cheating. He's also unaware that he's being watched by the C.I.A. and that Bond intervenes and makes Goldfinger start losing.
12) I don't appear to be poor, although the extent of my wealth was never actually determined.
He has enough money to lose $10,000 (which was a lot more to lose in 1964) and keeps coming back for more.
13) Our purpose for being here is different from just about everyone else.
Most people there are either swimming or sunbathing.
14) I relinquished the throne.
He let Goldfinger have his usual seat.
15) When the time finally came, I wasn't shy about expressing my feelings.
He got very excited once he started winning.
16) This place is the best.
Bond says that M booked him into the best hotel in Miami Beach.
17) Anger leads to destruction.
Goldfinger breaks the pencil.
18) Sky apparel.
Simmons is wearing a blue shirt, white pants, and blue shoes. It's the same colors as the sky on that beautiful Florida morning.
19) There's absolutely no doubt about our location.
We see a big banner in the sky that reads, "Welcome to Miami Beach."
20) What's warm on the outside but cold on the inside?
The hotel has an ice skating rink inside.
21) Everybody plays the fool.
Simmons is a fool for not knowing that Goldfinger is cheating. Then, Bond makes a fool of Goldfinger. Bond also plays the fool when Oddjob knocks him unconscious and kills Jill.
22) We make sure that everything is being properly documented.
They are writing down the score of the game.
23) My patience has a limit.
Goldfinger hesitates when he can't hear Jill, so Simmons barks, "C'mon, C'mon" at him.
24) I never even had a chance to thank him.
He never had a chance to thank Bond because he didn't know that he had to thank him!
25) Fleming had envisioned things happening a little differently.
In the novel, there is no Simmons. It's Mr. Du Pont from Casino Royale and Bond makes Goldfinger lose more money.
26) It's a beautiful morning.
We know it's morning because Goldfinger says "Good Morning" to Mr. Simmons.
27) I submitted the damage report as requested.
He tallies up his score after he loses the first hand.
28) We are hoping not to get wet.
From people splashing in the pool.
29) It's been a long week, but it was worth the wait.
He lost all week long, but now he's finally winning!
30) I'm fully prepared for whatever may happen.
"When you're ten grand in the hole, you're ready for anything."
31) Good thing my hands are clean.
We see a closeup of his hands through Jill's binoculars.
32) You didn't see me at the Casino Royale.
Well, we didn't. Again, a reference to Mr. Du Pont from the novels.
33) Absolutely fabulous!
"That Goldfinger is a fabulous card player."
34) Bond is around here somewhere, but I don't see him.
He doesn't even know who Bond is, so of course he didn't see him!
35) We were given a task that will take a good amount of time to complete.
Bond thinks that Goldfinger losing the money should keep him occupied for some time.
36) What once was lost has now been found.
His money!
37) Something important was switched at the last minute.
Again, a reference to EON switching to Cec Linder at the last minute.
38) Seen and not heard?
He can see Goldfinger's "hearing aid", but he doesn't hear Jill talking to him.
39) My eyesight allows me to know what is mine.
"Well, I can see this is really my day!"
40) Amazing acrobatics!
The divers do some amazing acrobatic dives off the diving board. In particular, the guy in the background when Felix is walking towards James.
41) The tide is turning.
He's starting to win.
42) Was that too soon?
"So soon?" He is dismayed by Goldfinger winning the first hand so quickly.
43) It was the first of many more to come, and I missed it!
The first interaction between Bond and Goldfinger.
44) I am authorized to talk to Bond.
He is a man. Bond shooed Dink away because of "MAN TALK", remember?
45) He who laughs last, laughs best.
Obviously.
46) I get irritated when gold becomes bronze.
When Goldfinger requests his usual seat, Simmons makes a remark about his suntan.
As Creasy surmised, Gold = Goldfinger and Bronze = bronzing his skin.
47) Speak up darling, I can't hear you.
Goldfinger can't hear Jill when Bond turns the transceiver off.
48) Half of everything is what needs to change.
Half of everything is luck. "My luck's gotta change sometime."
Christ, if I didn't think about that clue at least a few times a day, every day, for the last few weeks.
1) Now we can't use those.
2) suspicion
