    I agree. GE was a great theatre experience for me, as was CR. Both were probably close to the most excited I've been for a film prior to release and also the most elated after watching it.

    Yep. For me they were Bond done 'properly'

    Mind you if Jack Wade could be edited out of GE I'd be a happy man...

    I think so too. As it stands GE truly is a starting Bond movie for a new actor in the role, like DN and CR.

    I don't see that. GE feels to me like it needed to be the first Bond of the 90's and at least the 2nd film from a Bond actor (didn't have to be Dalton, but I would have been improved if it were Dalton as Bond, imo).

    I don't think the score is that bad. It's got a couple of dodgy tracks but there are some really nice pieces in the film, especially the scene with Bond and Natalya at the beach.

    I like the score personally. Very modern sounding (even now) and a different approach for a Bond film. It works very well with the film, especially the soldier chanting that they use for some of the Russian scenes. The only parts I didn't really like were the tank score, which ironically wasn't Serra's (and I like his original version on the CD even less), and of course the pathetic "The Experience of Love"

    I agree, the Tank chase original is bloody awful!

    'The Experience of Love' just isn't a Bond song. Certainly ended the film on a bum note!

    Sorry but Brosnan would have been way better for Goldeneye. Dalton is a great Bond but there's just something about him that feels old fashioned.

    I watched Gold last night i do think Dalton could have done well, while it does have its moments where Brosnan fits like a globe example the Casino and Sauna Scenes. The film has a different from his other other three which seems like it was first written for Dalton's.

    I've always personally felt that the GE Bond was notably different from the other Bond characterizations of Brosnan's, and quite frankly I much preferred the GE one. Whether that was because it was written for Dalton, I don't know. It just seemed more edgy and 'alpha', whereas in TND & TWINE I detected (even in the theatre on first watch in both cases) what I can only best describe as a troubling underlying wussiness to the characterization, which was only finally & thankfully corrected in DAD.

    Mmm I thought we agreed on Pierce getting better with time. While Goldeneye was a great debut for him. I thought the characterization was a little strange with moments where Dalton should have been in it like the meeting with Alec and the pre tittles sequence but latter does have its moments which were very in style of Pierce like the Race, the casino, The Sauna and the escape from train.

    I think his best was The world is not enough it was the film best written for him. It had its campy and serious moments but all written for him and fitting Pierce and no one else.

    I also think that GE goes in another direction. I cannot really imagine Dalton with an mashine gun. The Brosnan era with all these explosions and over the top actions sequences is already introduced in GE even though the film also includes many more darker and suspensefull scenes compared to the later Brosnan films.

    With regard to the film, I could rather imagine Dalton in TWINE.

    Agreed. It was best to move forward with a new start and the anointed one, who the public had been clamouring for stateside for 8 yrs anyway.

    Tim could have easily played Bond up through 2002. He looked great in the 90s.

    That's the other thing: lots of viewers at the time would have seen a new Bond with Dalton as downright provocation.

    People wanted Brosnan. The Americans wanted Brosnan. Brosnan wanted Brosnan. It's only near the end of Brosnan tenure that Dalton was reevaluated as Bond. People here seem to forget the borderline hostility Dalton was facing at the time.

    yes, the difference between OP and some of the other wackier entries is that, as crazy as it gets, it never forgets to tell an engaging and intriguing story with good characters and genuine tension. With MR, DAD and to a certain extent DAF, they all just kinda unravel after a certain point and nothing seems to matter anymore. Even the much derided clown suit in OP is part of a fantastically thrilling and suspenseful sequence. For me the film pushes the comedy to the limit, without ever losing the central focus of the plot. Its a great flick for a Sunday afternoon.

    Totally agree. A very skillfully made movie.

    It has a great 3rd act. That's what makes it one of the better Bond films. That and Roger Moore on fire.

    It was to many people including me at the time. I've said it before and I'll say it again: no Bond actor has ever had is as easy as Brosnan when he got the role. He was borderline plebiscited. Dalton on the otger hand had his fans but they had already lost the argument, maybe as early as TLD. That is utterly unfair but that's what it was then.

    One should also keep in mind that the producers wanted Brosnan already in 1987 who was not available at the time.
