Rupert Penrys-Jones discusses losing out to Toby Stephens

Did anyone hear Ruper Penrys-Jones interviewed on Radio 2 (UK) on Saturday morning? He told host Graham Norton that he had lost out the role of a Bond villain a few years ago.

Norton asked him which one and he was genuinely unsure of the film but he did know who got the role. Toby Stephens!

Someone obviously clued Norton up and the host mentioned 'Die Another Day' as being the film.

Although Rupert wasn't sure of the film title he remembered that the villain was an Asian who had his features altered to a caucasian. Then he made a curious mistake and added that the villain 'wept blood'. Now how would the actor have been so vague about the film but somehow manage to add a small detail about the villain from Casino Royale? Unless he went up for both roles?

well... as the script was constantly changing - maybe that was the original "side effect" for Col. Moon after the gene therapy transformation.... instead, it was later changed to insomnia... and the producers/writers liked that idea of weeping blood, that they held it over for Casino Royale...

who knows.... maybe he just got mixed up lol.

he's playing silly buggers. He knows full well what he went up for. My mate is an actor and he still remembers every casting he's ever been for.

And of course, Wurpert has always made it known that he wanted the Bond role...

    There's a potential explanation I never considered

And @forgotmyusername, I must admit it seemed strange to me that an actor occassionally touted as a potential Bond would be so vague about the Bond films, especially ones he has auditioned for.

He couldn't have been any worse than Toby Stephens, yet if he can't even be bothered to remember clearly what the film was, then quite frankly he didn't deserve it!

maybe he is vague on purpuse ! honestly I don't believe an actor couldn't remember which role he was approached for in such high-profile franchise like Bond !!

I doubt anyone could have made that role any better. Maybe Penrys-Jones can get something in the future or more likely, his time has passed. Rather a villain, than Bond though, is what I'd want.

Well they discussed The Saint (@SaintMark ;) ) and it looks likely that he has a chance at that, and it would certainly suit him.

Good shout - he has a bit of Moore about him. Funny ears though.

I like RPJ alot. I enjoyed him in Spooks and Whitechapel. I could see him as a fellow MI6 agent but not as Bond.
