Warning to census takers with attitude problems: NBC has cast its Hannibal Lecter.

Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) has landed the title role in Hannibal, the Peacock’s contemporary series take on the characters from Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon novel.

The project, written and exec-produced by Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller and slated to debut at midseason, centers on the budding relationship between FBI agent Will Graham (played by Hugh Dancy) and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter – who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship.

Mikkelsen just picked up the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt. He was recently cast as the lead villain in Marvel’s upcoming Thor sequel.

Wish NBC didn't have the show at all, but Mads is a good choice. He has a very dark and potent presence about him.

Bryan Fuller, eh? If this show isn't cancelled before it's time, then Fuller's luck has changed.

Taking of Fuller, i've been meaning to see Wonderfalls for a while now, I should do that some time.

It has a high probability of being cancelled.

Too true, he has the worst luck. Even the Carrie tv pilot back in 2002 failed to lead to a tv series,

Not sure I want them to continue with the Lecter franchise. Manhunter and Silence were, IMHO, great films yet Hannibal felt a bit artie fartie to me and as for Red Dragon, there are good elements in that film but it felt like a cheaper version of Manhunter. Rising felt quite inconsistent with what had been set-up previously. I suggest they leave it at rest for at least 15 years and then give the next generation their own Hannibal Lecter.

Hannibal is my favourite in the series. Don't think I've seen Manhunter. Must check it out.

I've only seen 'Silence of the Lambs' and I thought it was a really good film. :)

It's mostly like The Red Dragon, with different actors and lower budget.

and with Michael Mann's aesthetics applied to maximum effect. I also love the musical choices and the plot,
although it's a bit weird for the character of Lecter to just disappear after the second act.

Sadly, I think you're right. I'm really looking forward to this show but NBC has really bad luck with reimagined shows.

I have no idea of Fuller's previous attempts at TV, I was simply going on the fact that the show will be appearing on the NBC network, which gets increasing notorious for faulty shows and cancellations.

And he won at Cannes! Good to see one of my favorite Bond baddie actors getting a wider reach of material to get involved with! :-bd

Isn't there another show on NBC later this year ? 'Revolution' or something ? looks appalling.

So many shows @DC007, so many incoming cancellations. Just hide under the bed until it's over.

I started watching Touch for the same reason, @DaltonCraig007. I wanted to see Kiefer Sutherland after 24. I have to say though, I am a bit disappointed. It's not a bad show, but it's not that great either. The last few episodes were better. I still haven't seen the finale though.

    Great news !!!! Awesome !!!

@0Brady the show is about Kiefer's character, who lost his wife on 9/11 and his 10 years old boy who is autistic, doesn't talk, but can predict future events.... and Kiefer has to help the people caught in these events

Sounds like Person of Interest a little, which all sounds like Minority Report.

Has anyone been watching this? I've just finished episode 4 and have been hugely impressed so far.

Hugh Dancy for my money embodies Will Graham better than even William Petersen did in Manhunter and leaves Ed Norton's limp portrayal swinging in the wind.

Although the real stand out is the man himself, I might get flamed for this but I think Mads is the best Lecter I've ever seen, Hopkins has just done far too much damage to the character for me to take him serious. He's fine in Lambs although Foster and Levine walk away with the film in my humble opinion.

Mads doesn't fall back on the lazy charming routine coaxing you to like him with the sly humour, he portrays the good Dr as a amazingly intelligent, dangerously deceptive and utterly chilling monster in a way only Hopkins grandstanding hammy routine could dream about. Mads is simply mesmerizing plus you go in knowing who he is and watch him in the open with somewhat of a more cheery disposition, using his skills to manipulate his way around, getting a chance to see the beginning of the Hannibal/Graham relationship, a delicious proposition for my money.

Strangely enough just when you think it's going to become the serial killer of the week show it surprises you. Creator Bryan Fulller who has the rights to both Lecter and Graham has proposed that Season 4 will essentially be Red Dragon, as someone who greatly likes Manhunter ( it was a great film but not a good adaptation) and abhors Red Dragon, I have no problem with the series revising Harris' first Lecter novel.

Fuller has a 7 season arc planned although the rights to Clarice Starling are not yet in his possession although I presume they will if this series gets the chance to play out, NBC is yet to confirm a 2nd season although even if they passed if a half baked remake like the American Killing can be rescued then I can't see Hannibal not being saved, maybe even a Netflix scenario like David Fincher's superb re imagining of the brilliant BBC series House of Cards.

I'm waiting to see if this continues first but if it does you can bet I'll be watching. I have heard great things about it too. Thanks for the write up @Shardlake.

Mads is the Nicolas Wending Refn connection to Bond 24 perhaps? Worked with Refn in Valhalla Rising.

Watched the first two episodes today (I've been taping the series, only just got round to watching it) and really enjoyed them. Mikklesen and Dancy are both brilliant and have great chemistry.

It's been renewed for a second season too
