    Nobody commented on/checked Gerald Bull?
I studied him a bit a few years back, and he definitely was interesting. Like a Bond villain he had no real ideologies and was just looking for the highest bidder to buy his weaponry. It still remains a mystery who "silenced" him all those years back as well. Definitely a compelling story, that.

Indeed he does - not as far fetched as some think that Octopussy...

And Orlov's analysis still holds true - just what are we going to do? Do we have the stomach to go nuclear if he starts rolling into Poland and the Baltics? I dont think so.

Exactly, that is all too scarily true. That said, I would hope the West would not just stand idly by and allow the Russians to take back all of the old Soviet satellite states of Eastern Europe.

I do think that is still a fairly unlikely scenario. Russia is hardly a constructive force in the region, but neither do I think it really wants utter anarchy on all frontiers. The support for the Ukrainian separatists is cynical but I also think the West's attitude towards Russian throughout the Ukrainian uprising could have been designed to provoke this kind of response. The downing of the Malaysian airlines is clearly a hideous (and tragic) cock up, and I very much doubt it was done with Putin's blessing.

Let's not forget that this year the West has supported the overthrowing of a democratically elected president in Ukraine and largely ignored the concerns of those in the east of Ukraine whose natural focus is much more on Russia than the EU. What Russia is doing is wrong, but it is not without provocation or rational motivation.

And when it comes to rolling tanks into other countries, the UK and US are not in a strong position to lecture any one.
