It's simple: which elder actors command respect with every word they speak or every blink of their eyes?
Here's my list.

1. Sean Connery: a legend
2. Roger Moore: a beautiful human being
3. Leonard Nimoy: always a powerful appearance
4. Clint Eastwood: a superbadass cool mofo
5. Kirk Douglas: always will he be, the man who freed the slaves
6. Peter O' Toole: finesse at its best (turning 80 this year)
7. Robert Duvall: a cool cat
8. Gene Hackman: what a voice!
9. Max von Sydow: the bad guy, by default
10. William Shatner: deliciously honest

(I need to wait one more year to add Michael Caine to this list. And in seven years from now, Ian McKellen will climb the spot position.)

Recently saw Christopher Plummer in "Beginners" (with Ewan McGregor) and he was amazing. Well worth renting if only to see his performance, even though it's a great film all around.

Eastwood mostly directs and produces but a real talent and class individual.
Jones and Hackman (along with others on this post) were not just movie stars, these guys were real actors.

Clint Eastwood is definitely one of my favorite 80+ actors, with Michael Caine nearly there. He'll turn 80 next year.

Ahh, I can't believe I forgot one of my favorites: Christopher Plummer. I actually discovered his acting with a direct-to-DVD horror film in the 90's, I believe, called 'The Clown At Midnight.' Quite entertaining and pretty scary, actually. I never knew much about his older work, but he seemed to really shine in the years that followed, with my favorite film of last year, 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,' and after his Oscar winning role in 'Beginners,' I'll have to check that out.

    Gene Hackman (1930-)
    Richard Johnson (1927-)

All my other favourite actors are either no longer with us, or aren't quite 80.

Well if we included the 70's it would be a longer list for sure. All the actors mentioned above are great. I am putting Peter O'Toole at the top of my list. Also very fond of Hackman, Garner, von Sydow, Plummer, Jones, Eastwood.

Okay now which ladies are in their 80's??? I actually have to look up ages now, I know some in their 70's still kickin' it and amazing ...

In terms of actresses, I'm a fan of Ruby Dee - she was excellent in 'American Gangster' - and Ellen Dow, who has always been hilarious, will be 99 years old this November.

A pretty short list this 'un, Dimi, given the 80+ year-old limit, but off the top of my head for great actors alone would have include have to include Peter O'Toole, Max von Sydow and Robert Duvall.

A list of movie stars would be a little different, though, and have to include Conners, Clint, Hackman, Douglas, Christophers Plummer and Lee and, of course, Sir Rog.

And a slightly younger upper age limit (70+) would allow me to list the likes of Albert Finney, Vanessa Redgrave, Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Tom Courtney, John Hurt, Jack Nicholson, Jane Fonda and more...

Mel Brooks deserves to be on this list for sure.

I'll add Gene Wilder next year

Heavens, is Mel still alive? I honestly did not know that. He influenced many other films, for sure.

He isn't 80 yet, only 76 years of age, but I always like watching anything with Burt Reynolds.
  • Duvall is still my favorite actor even at this point in his career. Gotta admire a man who was in (and was great in every one of them) The Godfather I and II, Network, Apocalypse Now, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Conversation.

Connery, Moore, Eastwood, Hackman and Shatner for starters deserve respect and are worthy of a mention. Is Bill Shatner really over eighty though, have trouble saying that, he really looks no-one near it, and I was watching Star Trek The Motion Picture the other week and he really didn't look that much older from the original 1960s series, I think age has treated him well etc. Also Chris Lee of course, a real man and actor of substance, and damn it, I'll include Clifton James, still out and about at a mere 91 years of age I think, (I liked his JW Pepper character)

Favourite 70+ actresses that are still alive:
Genevieve Bujold (does she count, as she turns 70 in July)
    Elke Sommer
    Virna Lisi

While Lauren Hutton just misses out (69) this year.

Again, not really much there. A few of my favourite actresses have passed away, while the majority are still with us* but under 70 and wont be hitting that milestone just yet.

    * When I break down my lists of favourite actors and actresses, I tend to do it by decades they were born in, I find it easier that way. For instance with actresses, the 1980's win with having 8/35 actresses.
