The last I read would be "The Fadeout Vol. 1" by Ed Brubaker--a noir mystery story taking place against the backdrop of Hollywood's Golden Age. The first graphic novel I read was Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke", then that quickly escalated to a collection of Batman graphic novels and trades from Frank Miller & Jeph Loeb. Then I read "The Man Who Laughs" by Ed Brubaker and (similar to the reaction I had with Frank Miller) I branched out and started devouring the other stuff he's done with Criminal & Velvet. I'm really enjoying the Fade Out so far--just got Vol. 2 & 3 but have yet to read them.

I might definitely pick this up when a trade comes out.

By the way, are there any big Daredevil fans in here? I've had him on the brain recently due to the show coming back, and was curious if anyone could point me in the direction of a really great collection of Frank Miller's 80s run on the character. I want to get into his era because I've heard nothing but great things about it, and was curious to know where I could find a collection of his best stuff. For instance, the Roulette storyline, his Kingpin work with David Mazzucchelli and all the great Bullseye stuff.

That s the one to look for .

Yes, Mad Love is incredibly brilliant it was adapted into an episode for The New Batman Animated Series a couple of years after its publication.

I have these and they're a pretty great read. Just note that only maybe a 3rd of the first volume is written by Miller. The first two thirds before that are from when he started doing pencils:

Daredevil by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson vol. 1,2, & 3.

These are trades collecting Miller's run of the comics. Born Again by Frank Miller with art by David Mazzucchelli (creators of Batman Year One) is excellent and probably best to read after vol. 1-3 and "The Man Without Fear" (also by Miller with art by John Romita Jr. and it's a re-worked origin story if I recall). This is the only Daredevil stuff I've read so far but I recommend reading Born Again last because (IMO) it's the best of this lot. You do get some Bullseye stories in that Vol. 1-3 run and those stories do a good job of building up Kingpin as well. It's a long read but it covers Miller's 80s run on the series. I got mine off Amazon. If you're really only interested in the stuff Miller wrote then I'd try to pick up Vol. 1 used.

Klaus Jansson was terrific when he did Alien and Metal Men, but no one touches Mazuchelli when it comes to Daredevil, except Bill Sienkiewicz when DD guest starred in Moon Knight.

@Thunderfinger and @josiah, thanks! I did some digging and found the same volumes you're talking about, and those'll probably be the ones I go to first. I like Miller's art as much as his writing, so I think they're worth checking out. Thanks for the recommendations, gents.

One of my favs as well! The Morris/Goscinny years were the pinnacle of course.

Just reread the second COMANCHE album from 1971 by Hermann and Greg (who also brought you Bernard Prince).

One of the best ever western series.

HOWARD THE DUCK-the complete collection volume 2

Covers 1976. Such fun. Most of the biting social commentary was gone by then, though.

Edit: Progressing through 1977, the social commentary is indeed back. And there is a Star Wars farce, named Star Waauugh. May the farce be with you.

    BATMAN:THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN

When this came out, I was disappointed and didn t find it a worthy sequel to The Dark Knight Returns. Rereading it now, I can see how wrong I was. This is brilliant.

@Thunderfinger I haven't read that one yet, but I read "The Dark Knight Returns" so I have no opinions currently either way on "Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again". May I ask what it was that you enjoyed about it? I'm always looking for recommendations :)

As for myself, I just finished reading Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters, Green Arrow: Hunter's Moon, and Green Arrow: Here There Be Dragons by Mike Grell. I just started on "The Trial of Oliver Queen". This is the first I've read of the Emerald archer (save for the appearance he made in "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns") and these came recommended by a good friend. I am really enjoying the story arcs and the types of villains he is going up against. I also really like the Shado character. I may have to read more. If there are any other Green Arrow fans out there, please feel free to toss out some recommendations. I'm officially hooked. :)

I haven't read a lot of Green Arrow but Kevin Smith wrote a GA comic book at one point. I thought his Batman stuff is brilliant so I might give it a try.

Mike Grell is a terrific artist.

Initially I was put off by both the storyline and artwork in the sequel, but now I find both very enjoyable. Miller is a genius.

@Thunderfinger Yes, Frank Miller is a genius (maybe even a god). After Batman: Year One & Batman: The Dark Knight Returns I got into his Sin City books and Daredevil material--great stuff. I just found out Mike Grell was involved with Batman as well and based on what he does with writing and the artwork in "The Longbow Hunters" I might have to see if I can track some of his work on Batman down.

The Coming of the Supermen. That's a porno title if I ever heard one.
As for Red Son, I'd LOVE to see Cavill in that depiction!! What a cool story

They were terrific and quite groundbreaking. Also his Batman work with Denny O Neill plus Superman vs Muhammad Ali.

Have you read the Batman Odyssey, by Neal Adams?
    It's.....weird.
But the art sure takes me back!

Apparently yes, it is. The title sounded familiar.

And I know what you mean about the dialogue. I know Neal Adams is a fascinating artist, but as this is the only one of his work I've read as a writer, I could say writing isn't his forte.
