I got issue 1, the story is a bit strange, just like back in the 70's, but the art is awesome.

    ACCIDENT MAN

    AM_Cover_v8_web.jpg.size-600.jpg

Sure, there's better stuff out there but Accident Man can be an amusing read. In the end, it's only four relatively short stories, with the final one, in black and white no less, definitely the most interesting of the four. Something of a cult following built up over the years and I guess I just joined. There's fun to be had, even if the book isn't splendid.

    JUPITER'S LEGACY

Mark Millar is my hero. Ever since I read Kingsmen, I wanted more of this peculiar artist. I still have a lot to read of his but Jupiter's Legacy (and next Jupiter's Circle, leading up to volume 2 of Legacy) is great stuff already! Taking the superhero genre into yet another direction, Millar's writing and storytelling are every bit as fun here as they are in his other books, like Kingsmen and Kick-Ass. The artwork is astounding. Definitely a recommend!

I've had a run at it last November. The cover art is misleading though and as I went to pick up information on the premise, it described "Accident Man" as a modern-day James Bond, which he was anything but. Mike Fallon, the titular character, is a total maniac who happens to wear good suits (but not in the first story arc! A Londoner Pub-man!), but kills in the most violent ways that gives him pleasure.

Accident Man first appeared in the short run Toxic comic. It was meant to be a rival to 2000AD comic. Toxic only ran a few issues, 2000AD celebrates its 40th year of publication next year!

The cover of the graphic novel looks intentionally James Bond-ish. I guess it's to attract comic book fans that like Bond. As mentioned above, the main hero of Accident Man is nothing like James Bond, though.

Dark Horse Comics later republished the whole run in three issues as limited series. The complete Accident Man franchise was recollected in one only a few years ago. Silly isn't it, though? Dark Horse Comics published them in '91, and a year later, they acquired the rights to publish James Bond comics.

I agree that the cover was misleading for this comic is very different from anything Bond.

Indeed. What I find comically intriguing though was the character's need to punch up some thugs just to let out his anger management energy after a cold blooded "accidental" murder, which he calls Post-Murder Tension. LOL!

There's talk - as there always is *sigh* - of a film adaptation. I wonder who, except perhaps Neveldine & Taylor, can bring the subversive humour of the comic to the big screen and do it justice.

If we do expect Hollywood to step in, then forget about humour. It'll be all depressing and so down-to-earth to make you "feel" the "humanity" of the character and his reasons for what he does.

    Go figure! :))

Wow, that would be tricky. :-) Who's going to direct that? David Lynch? :D

David Lynch? My reaction is precisely the same as John Cleese when he'd say "Oh dear!"

    Haha :D Good one, @ClarkDevlin. ;-)
Who do you see as a potential director for a faithful adaptation?

    @DarthDimi, I'm glad you enjoyed that! :D

Guy Ritchie would do hell of a job with that, I say.

Yes! I can see that. Would Henry Cavill be playing Fellon? :)

Somehow it's hard to imagine Cavill in this role.

But, somehow, the first actor that came to mind who can do maniac and suave at the same time is Tom Hardy. He's definitely the pub guy who can also be a suit-clad hitman who loves violence.

    Tom Hardy! Yes, excellent question.
Unfortunately, I doubt it can be done. Although after the success of Deadpool a slightly more naughty "mainstream" film mightn't be totally out of the question.

That would be a problem. If they keep making it too generic to feed the satisfaction of the mainstream media, then Accident Man will become "Incident Man" (box office bomb and critically panned material).

The last DC comic series I read was Batman Zero Year. Can anyone fill me in as to what's going on with New52 now? Is that done for, and they are rebooting again?

@chrisisall, if I didn't know any better I'd say, from the title of that comic, that you were into some pretty heavy Ron Jeremy porn. ;-)

Thanks to the on-going tv series, I have developed an interest in The Flash. Can anyone recommend any good starting points for comic book Flash?

  • Those of you who find Neal Adams' scripting "quirky" really need to read some of Jack Kirby's scripting on The New Gods/"Kirby's Fourth World" series from the early '70s. And to my mind, for classic Flash, you need to see Carmine Infantino's pace-setting work from the late '50s into the mid-60s. Finally, re: the New 52 -- yes, DC is rebooting for the umpteenth time. Based on the law of diminshing returns, I expect a re-re-reboot sometime around November of this year.

    I just ordered this:

I've never read it before, but it's written by Doug Moench, and that's good enough for me.

@BeatlesSansEarmuffs, has DC said anything about why another reboot is happening, and how much of the current 52 universe is being trashed? Is all of it accepted as continuity, or is the work these many writers have done over the past few years all for nothing as the company start from scratch again?
  • They've been pretty vague about the impact on their current continuity. Why is it happening? Because starting all over at square one is a proven short term sales boost...and short term profits are all the Powers That Be care about. It's not like they're making enough money off the movies generated by their marquee characters...
