Just finished reading all 28 issues of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's superhero epic KICK-ASS and wow, did it kick some ASS! In the suggested reading order,
- Kick-Ass 1-8
- Hit-Girl 1-5
- Kick-Ass 2 1-7
- Kick-Ass 3 1-8
KICK-ASS is one linear sequence of moments of juicy graphic violence and some of the best comedy Millar has ever come up with. I'm turning into a Millar worshipper; after SECRET SERVICE, CIVIL WAR, SUPERMAN: RED SON, CHRONONAUTS, ULTIMATE X-MEN, JUPITER'S LEGACY and JUPITER'S CIRCLE, I couldn't let my hero down by not reading what I now perceive to be his finest work ever. Especially given the fact that I have been a fan of the films for years, and that I owe my love for Chloë Grace Moretz to them, KICK-ASS just had to be read, right? But with so much stuff yet to read, I reluctantly set out to page through all 28 issues. My reluctance vanished after exactly 2 pages and I went at it with a voracious appetite. Great comedy, wonderful artwork, some of the most subversive stuff I've ever read! Hit-Girl is simply amazing. If you're easily offended, stay as far away from KICK-ASS as you can, and that's the greatest compliment I can give this delicious comic book.
Thanks for the recommendation, @DarthDimi.
I still bought them all (Batman, JL, Flash) but didn't read anymore since 2010 for lack of time.
So with this I'll start (thanks to @0BradyM0Bondfanatic7 :
I'll read it all through No 12 Court of Owls/City of Owls and then continue as I have heard great things about Death Of The Family, Zero Year and Endgame.
I ordered some new books to add to my Batman collection just last night. I got volumes 2 and 3 of Snyder and Capullo's Batman run that wraps the Owls arc and starts a Joker story (I'll get to Zero Year and Endgame some other time), Batman: Gotham By Gaslight and its sequel in one collection, and the Batman: Nine Lives noir comic. I look forward to dipping into each and every one of them soon.
Many thanks to those that gave me recommendations, as well.
Both Gotham by Gaslight and Nine Lives belong to my favourites. I'd go so far to put both into my Top 10, maybe Top 15.
Also great you found a collection with the sequel Master Of The Future.
I'll try to put my impressions of Court of Owls into words once I've read enough :) or I'll end up commenting on every single frame :))
From 1979-1980. This is where a certain Wally Sidney gives Howard pants.
The original series, a stretch of comics from 1981, set between TESB and ROTJ. I can remember some excellent Star Wars strips from that era drawn by Al Williamson, but this wasn t it. Pretty bad and disappointing.
I thought the movies were mature and unfit for kids, but this is way more brutal. Hilarious at the same time. Different enough from the movie that I can enjoy this first read without it feeling like I know it all already. Thanks for the recommendation, @DarthDimi.
