I think hoppimike sounds like a crazy, mixed up kid, not sure what he likes..... ;)
  • Could you please stop ridiculing this Guy. At least he knows what he wants in a Bond movie and that is a Script that does not insult every Fiber of ones Brain. To me this doesn't sound too farfetched a Demand!

I read some good points a few pages back about the DB5. Here are my thoughts. Seeing the DB5 with the James Bond theme was a thrill upon first viewing; I was there with some friends who are also Bond fans, everyone in the theatre cheere and so on... <i>But</i> it did strike me as a bit of a gimmick. I have a feeling that 5 years from now or even less, that moment will have lost it's novelty. It reminds me of the Yoda scene in Attack of the Clones: there was all this hype about Yoda using a lightsaber in combat for the first time. So when I finally saw that scene in 2002, I was thrilled. Years later, that scene carries very little weight; and seems more of a gimmick to show a 'cool' lightsaber action scene with Yoda. The jury is still out on the DB5 for me, but I'm concerned that scene might go the same way as the Yoda...

No, I agree. But when he starts spouting off about what is the definitive Bond character, when he hasn't seen a single Moore film, or Dalton film, or most of the Connery films, or read a single page of Fleming, then he is in no position to tell people here what the definitive Bond character is.

Well, there are 23 films, right? That's a lot!

Plus I only got properly into them like.. what, a month ago? xD

Before then it was a very casual interest :)

    aw thanks dude :)

I agree too, and also really don't think that one's ability to judge Bond films comes solely from the number of the previous films they've seen! After all, I think they've always gone for mainstream appeal, and the vast majority of people haven't seen THAT many of the films.

As for the scripts/storyline... I have always been able to tell the difference between a good one and a bad one even if I didn't understand them in their entirety when I was younger. You can sense the depth in films like GoldenEye even when you're only 13 or whatever :)

Definitely check them all out. I think when I first saw them all, I would watch 1 or 2 a weekend until I had seen them all. It's interesting to see the evolution of the series over time: how one is a reaction to the other: Diamonds to OHMSS, or FYEO to Moonraker, or CR to DAD. I would recommend seeing one of the documentaries as well as introduction and to give some context to the film. Everything or Nothing was great and gives some perspective to the history of the film series.

Regarding the db5 scene it's supposed to be a gimmick. It's a deliberate nod to the series' own history, which is one if the reasons why the scene does not last long and is over pretty quickly. It's set up really well, with the angle of, needing to change vehicles but other than that it's not meant to be anything other than an Easter egg for fans of the series.

I agree, and I was tickled by the scene too. But my concern, as others have expressed, is that, do these gimmicks hold up in the long run? Should EON be a little more subtle? The nods I do like, are the use of John Barry's home in the film. That's a nice tribute.

It's a gimmick and like the tarzan cry these are not generally things I welcome in a Bond movie. It's a Bond movie set in a different timeline referencing an almost 50 year old Bond film in a parallel universe. It's post-modern and as such takes you out of the moment - it invites you to step back and enjoy the joke. Not only that but Mendes does it as if we haven't already seen the DB5 innevery bloody movie since 1995. So sick of it. Just move on!

    hm cool :)

I mean, I do like Bond in general but I think it was Casino Royale and QoS that really pulled me in, as opposed to the older ones.

However, recently I was just in HMV with a gift voucher and I wanted to use part of it to buy the "best Bond film" so I could check it out. I looked online and it suggested Goldfinger, so I watched that and that's what started this fixation I guess! I also bought Casino Royale simply because I had spare money on the card (and a couple of other films).

So yeah erm, a bit of an accidental fixation but I just adore CR and QoS!

I'll watch the older ones (pre-Brosnan) at some point, but... I think due to their age I find it harder to relate to them. Key moments stand out, but largely I find them a bit harder to get into as they're "before my time"...

@Getafix, Well he had the car destroyed too. Looks like moving on from the db5 is what they were going for.

@jbfan, I also prefer the nods like using Barry's home too, although such a nod is a bit too obscure. I particularly like the casino scenes with Bond abd Sevarine, where Bond notices tge branding on her wrist and when Sevarine says, "nice to have met you Mr.Bond" both these instances are nods to Count Lippe in TB where Bond notices tge Tong sign on his wrist and Lippe himself on 2 occasions says, "nice to have met you, Mr.Bond". They're nit as obscure as Barry's home but not so on the nose as the tricked out db5.

@hoppimike, didn't you say you recently watched Dr.No abd thoroughly enjoyed it? You can't get older than Dr.No as it's the first. Honestly, if you can try and watch them all. Looking at the transition in the styles and approaches for these movies should keep you entertained at the ver least but if you haven't seen from Russia with love, thunderball, on her majesty's secret service, the living daylights, license to kill, live and let die and the spy who loved me, I urge you to seek out these particular movies ASAP.

I know. I was glad to see the DB5 blown up. Mendes has ensured we are not subjected to more tedious 'references' to the car. But I would have prefered if he'd left it out completely in the first place. It's a lazy croud pleaser that we could have done without.

    Yeah that's what I thought...

Although once he'd brought it in, I felt even more bummed that it got blown up lol

    hm, maybe :)

I just finished TWINE which means I've seen all 4 Brosnan Bonds and all 3 Craig Bonds, which was a mini-goal of mine haha

'Twas alright! Maybe 8/10? Possibly 7.5 pretty much solely because I didn't find the villains that exciting.

But not a bad movie ^_^

Actually, that's an even better example! One only the fans would notice! Very subtle and not an obvious nod, like say Halle Barry dressed up as Honey Ryder - I mean really, who goes around the very public beaches of Havana with a knife attached to their bikini, granted it's Havana, and I've never been, but there's a difference between that and a vagabond islander like Honey Ryder who needs it for survival (I digress...)

Anyone think the end should have had Silva and Bond having a fist fight? At the time of seeing it I didn't think the ending with the knife was too abrupt but someone mentioned the lack of a real fight between the two on another forum.

    I don't mind stuff like using Barry's house. It's a nice touch.

A nicer touch would have been if his Bond scores had been shown the respect they deserved by the movie industry in his lifetime. Can't believe the BAFTA went to Newman for that dreary forgettable score. Shocking.
  • edited February 2013 Posts: 1,661
BAFTA should give the (late) John Barry a BAFTA. Sheesh, if Mr Newman can get one for Skyfall then Barry should get a posthumous one for all the earlier stuff that helped create the cinematic James Bond! John Barry was the music of James Bond. He was the man!

Doesnt EON have the rights to the music Barry wrote? Because im pretty sure they can use any of the familiar thems OTHER than the bond theme in future films.

Hm, interesting that he and I have completely different reasons for disliking Skyfall.

Other than the unease over the decision to practically make Bond bisexual/bicurious lol

    What were they smoking? o.O

Oh, great. You're one of those who thinks the Silva knee pat shows Bond's bisexuality. What a joke.

What were you smoking to think that?

Are you serious? It's honestly hard to tell.

But in case you are... How was it weird? What should he have said? He was clearly not happy to be harassed, but he kept his cool, and what he said was probably the best thing he could have said - Silva backed off and dropped that tactic (=sexual intimidation) immediately and tried something different instead a bit later to get under Bond's skin, to unsettle him, to get the upper hand. (Though that one didn't work, either.)

Bond is an intelligent and active person. Even if incapacitated physically he'll still use his brains to try and handle any situation. In that particular situation he reacted the only way he could - verbally in an intelligent way. And it worked like a charm.

If you really think that line or indeed anything else in that scene implies "the decision to practically make Bond bisexual/bicurious" and you feel "unease" about that, then I'm sorry for you.
  • Bardem's character was portrayed as bi-sexual from all that I could ascertain, but what's the big deal here with some participants ?

Is James Bond a bi-sexual character now, or at any time in the past, or has someone omitted to tell me something after all these long years of viewing ?

Have to concur with some other members here, in that some may be getting the wrong idea about something, or merely going down a one-way alley of ridiculous proportions ?

I'm not convinced Silva is bisexual. Could be, and I'm not saying he definitely isn't, but that in my opinion he's not really portrayed as specifically bisexual.

But I agree with you otherwise.

I seriously doubt it that Bond is bisexual this time around. Unless Le Cheffre smackhing him in the nutsack with a rope aroused him in some way......
