For some odd reason I had no idea De Niro was even in this film?

The film has also apparently a political say about today's climate. Who's Donald Trump's biggest hater in Hollywood?

If De Niro brings his A game, it'll be fine. In every other case, he could ruin things.

So I just read a spoiler review of Joker. Saw the joker preview in theaters for the first time.. I could see this being an Oscar winner.

Although this has nothing to really do with Batman. He isn't even the joker apparently. Just an inspiration.

I was really hoping that he would be THE joker. I am tired of these knock offs and trying to be different.

Joker has a permanent smile and is straight up creepy. Uncontrollable laughter also. No purple suit, the face paint looks weird. Yeah I am sure its an okay film, but didn't feel like a DC movie.

Awesome news! Also, it maybe better to start putting Batman movie news in the Batman thread, as we don't know if it's still apart of the DCEU.

Honestly, since it's almost like the DCEU banner is dying, this may as well be the DC Films thread about any and all DC movies or TV.

Not sure its a spoiler since the director came out and said its not based on any of the comics and hes just a guy wearing clown makeup who kills people..

I was super disappointed. I mean in the trailer they show a young Bruce Wayne and his father Thomas.

Same thing with the Gotham show.

They had Jerome and he was't the Joker but an inspiration. Then his twin brother shows up and he is apparently THE Joker.

Agreed. When it was first announced, I thought it was a terrible idea. Now having seen the trailer, I’m really looking forward to it.

Honestly in spite of me being a Batman only fan when it comes to comic books (seriously I don’t hate other hero’s and I even have some of the other comic book movies and even own a Blade and Moon night graphic novel) but this film reeks of Political correct anti trump nonsense it wrecks with the continuity and over all it feels unneeded., I get the hypocrisy as I am trying to write a Jaws 5 a film that if it ever gets made is REALLY UNNECESSARY but still for his anniversary year we should of had a solo Batman film but oh well

Well, the problem these days is that a lot of people are reading too much into a film. Perhaps you will find PC/anti-Trump stuff, perhaps not. If there is, some people get upset. If there isn't, others get upset. It's just impossible to please everyone nowadays and filmmakers will just have to accept that. I'm beginning to find these arguments tiresome, however.

I honestly believe JOKER has no political agenda; rather, it's an attempt to depart from the "Snyder universe" by going for something edgier, different, low-in-scope, realistic in ambition. It also feels like it's going to have something to say about society but in a strictly satirical and not at all political way.

If JOKER reeks of political correctness, I wonder what the trailer would have to come up with to make you think something else. Look, I'm the last person to claim that the PC craze hasn't forced filmmakers to make some poor choices recently, but I'm also getting the sense that staunch anti-PC'ers are getting a little nervous too fast these days. Some have but to see a poster or a trailer or even hear about a casting decision and they're all going "it's PC madness!" like it's a viral outbreak or something. Let's just relax. It's not always there, even if supporters and opposers so desperately want it to be.

The way I see it, this film is just trying to be the fascinating "ugly duckling" of the DC output, a standalaone film that might lean closer to 'art' than to 'entertainment'. Furthermore, Todd Phillips doesn't strike me as a particularly PC-sensitive guy. Joaquin Phoenix, apart from his animal rights activism and support of Bernie Sanders last election, has, for the most part, been operating outside of the "spotlight" system. I don't think we're dealing with an actor whose very intention is to support any flavor-of-the-month Twitter/Facebook obsession, like the blown-out-of-proportion PC craze.

Quite frankly, and perhaps I'm reading too much into this myself now, I believe that Phoenix, an atheist and social activist, is going to portray an outcast and failed member of society, who will be driven by nihilism and a belief in nothing that helps to keep the status quo intact. I think his Arthur Fleck is going to be less "2019" and more timeless, since in every era, people are flushed out and then retaliate with a vision some find inspirational and others find frightening. In my mind, he's going to be more of a social vigilante than a selfish crime lord. But nothing I've read or seen so far leads me to believe that this film is going to be either pro-Trump or contra-Trump. I don't think in 20 years from now, this film will be seen as something so obviously spawned by the Trump era. I may be mistaken, hence why I reserve judgement for when the film is actually released, but I dislike the fact the any film with a protagonist that inspires the masses to step outside of our social norms, is immediately seen as carrying political messages of some kind. I think this film will be smarter than that, way smarter than that. Or so I hope. ;-)

The movie itself is rumored to be a commentary on some modern day issues.

Media for about the last hundred years or more has been sprinkled with contemporary commentary. I don't see that as a bad thing.

Exactly, though I doubt that whatever commentary is in the film will be a direct political attack on Trump or whatever. I honestly think the film will be way better, smarter and more subtle than that.
