As much as I think the first one is good, the sequel rises high above it on action and budget. It also has my favourite incarnation of Max, the leather-clad cynical drifter who's reminiscent of Clint Eastwood's The Man With No Name, except he's swapped a mule for a car, the souped-up Pursuit Special, and a mangy dingo for company. I also think the vicious group of bandits played by Vernon Wells and Kjell Nilson are far more menacing and frightening as the lead villains, Wez and Humungus, than biker buddies Toecutter and co from MM1. I've only seen the first one with the original Australian accented soundtrack and not the much inferior American dubbed soundtrack version so I can't tell you whether that makes a difference or not. Also, the dystopic future is rather ambiguous in the first one, with a slight hint of post apocalyptica, but its never mentioned. In the sequel there's no question, which is how I prefer it. But I can understand why people prefer the first, it's just not the Max Rockatansky I wanted to see is all.

The only problem I have with Tom Hardy is maybe he won't have the right voice for Max. It'll be interesting what accent he adopts for the role.

I completely agree with you @bondsum, the first one was good but Road Warrior is the best. Has to be one of the greatest films of all time.

Hardy is a really good actor so I'm confident he'll get the accent right.

The first is great because it basically shows a late 70s/early 80s bike gang threat, which makes it kind of scary because it is so easy to imagine this could be real. And, yeah, the second one is even better!

As for Hardy, when I think of how he spoke in Bronson and TDKR, I hav no doubts that his voice alone will be worth the fare.

Is it just me or does anybody els think Daniel Craig would be a great choice for Mad Max, him and mel gibson kind of resemble each other in a weird kind of way...but anyway I could definitely see Daniel playing the role of Max, he would be perfect in my opinion, perhaps even better than Mel.

Nah. I really can't see it, Craig looks nothing like Mad Max. Besides, Tom Hardy is doing it and I think he's a great choice.

Ah but then the interviews will just cook up wrong expectations. Let´s just let them make a real killer film, else the interviews won´t be worth it anyhow ;-).
Instead, they should send a student with a camera all around on set and make a decent making-of.

I hope this formulation doesn´t conceal some bigger trouble. It should be expectable for a big production to get behind schedule and over budget. That shouldn´t be a surprise for anyone.

And of course it would run over budget, the budget was made two years ago then they had to transport everything to s africa. budget out the window

No. They're just filming one film although Miller has a plan for a fifth and sixth if this one is a success.

Sounds like everything´s cool. From the interviews I saw of Hardy, I can imagine he can be really really weird, but Theron is a very professional actress, so if Hardy´s staying in character it won´t give her a reason to freak out, it´s just a good source for funny episodes to talk about in late night shows. And besides, if they´re supposed to be opponents onscreen, they don´t necessarily need to hook up between takes.

He's certainly not the first actor to immerse himself in the character and to not switch off between takes. He's just another name you can add to the likes of Christian Bale, Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. For example, Day-Lewis spent months observing cerebral palsy patients and remained wheel-chair bound throughout the film’s production period. His refusal to break from character not only earned him an Oscar but also two broken ribs as a result of his constant hunched position.

Makes me wonder how the start of Mad Max starts though? Maybe Max has gone plumb loco after being stranded in the desert, hence the beard and the muttering to himself off-screen?

I just bought the first one, after I fell in love with the second one. I´m surprised how fantastic the first one is. I thought while the second one was the real deal the first one was kind of the low budget version of it, but it´s absolutely as fleshed out as the second one. Every single character is full of charisma, the settings are creating a subliminally weird mood, and the story doesn´t feel depressing even though it is so tragic. Amazing. I guess I´ll watch it five times before the end of the week :-).

It's currently in post production, @Samuel001, so my guess is a late Summer release depending on what competition it faces. These movies can get shifted around.
