Neal Adams was arguably the greatest comic book artist of the last third of the 20th century. He permanently revolutionized how Batman was drawn and caused a generation of artists to emulate him. Many artists tried to capture his realism but failed to match it, let alone his mastery of layout and sense of drama.
  • Nice interview, it captures Neal's personality as well as giving a sense of the context in which he (and Denny O'Neil) took over & revitalized the character.

Neal Adams did some great interviews on Kevin Smith's Fatman on Batman podcast several years ago, highly recommended if you have not listened to them. I will revisit them myself over the weekend.

That's very sad, especially for the Habs fan that I am.

Anecdote: my mum got introduced to Guy Lafleur by my grandfather when Lagleur was playing for the Remparts of Quebec City. Before he even was a star. She told me he seemed like a very shy guy.

That's an awesome connection to have! Must've been great to meet him.

She didn't think all that much of him to be honest, but then again unlike her father my mum never cared much about hockey. Funny, because even then people knew Lafleur was going to be great in the NHL.

RIP Neil Adams. I loved his talks with Kev on Fatman On Batman. Along with Denny O'Neil, he really understood where they had to take Batman next after many years of being subjugated to the anti-comic book hysteria that plagued America.

The early reveal of Batman in The Batman made me think of Neal Adams and how the perception of Batman is so important to the inhabitants of Gotham, its key to his character. I was very impressed by what Matt Reeves did there.

Agreed. I hope the sequel, or one of the animated features, will be dedicated to him.

The cover is indeed awesome, the inside review of TMWTGG is..... less so. It put me off from seeing the movie for a year or so when it first came out.

Most definitely there will be a huge recognition for Neal Adams, they should show respects in all mediums.

As much as I love Sir Roger's TMWTGG it is problematic, the film was released the year I was born, ironically I think it is one of the most cartoon Bond's. I have not read that particular review, I am curious to read there thoughts.

If you do get a chance to read it, keep in mind that the author of that review, Don McGregor, went on to script the (aborted after a few issues had seen print) adaptation of the movie, "Goldeneye."

Neal Adams has been one of my favourite comic book artists since I was a kid. One of the masters. Thank you for all the joy and excitement you brought into our lives, Neal.

@Thunderfinger I'll always associate Neal Adams with Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan. And ALL the Ballantine paperback covers by Adams (and Boris Vallejo) I bought in the 70s and 80s.

To be fair, if Adams was a great artist (no comic book collection is complete without at least one of his works), as a writer... Well, look at Batman : The Odyssey. Bad doesn't even begin to cover it. He was, IMO, always better when paired with a good writer, such as Denny O'Neil, for example. Of course, YMMV.

Agreed. Odyssey is not only badly written, but the art, while still dashing and competent, looks like a self-parody.

I remember reading an interview with Denny O'Neil where he was asked if he'd consider collaborating with Adams again. He said something along the lines of "yes, if I knew for sure that he wasn't going to change my script."

I don't think Odyssey is bad per se, but it's rough. Still, I will take that book over most recent DC titles.

Damn ! I knew this was going to happen, but it still hurts : Famous comic book artist George Pérez (The Avengers, The New Teen Titans, and too many to count) has left us, aged 67.

He was one of my favourite artists, and I even had the honour of interviewing him way back when I was involved in a fanzine about comics. He will be missed.

Sad to hear of the passing of Dennis Waterman. He was a fixture of my TV youth. Firstly in The Sweeney as George Carter with his terrific double act with John Thaw. And then another monster hit with Minder. Still going strong twenty years later on New Tricks. Sad news and only 74

I just heard. Two classic shows with The Sweeney and Minder, plus his stint on the more recently New Tricks (which I have never seen, save for the odd clip).

    RIP
