If they wanted to make him edgy then you’d have thought just having him leave Marion without saying goodbye or something would have been enough. Or maybe he could have been in another relationship; or perhaps he could have used Marion to get close to Abner for his own devices or something. But yeah the underage thing was just weird: I know it was a bit more common in the 30s but it certainly wasn’t okay in 1981!

Here he is going shopping for a new watch in Mayfair this weekend: he may be old, but I hope I look that good when I'm old!

  • Filming in Morocco according to a YouTube source but IMdD had his listed already as a location. Does this mean Sallah will return?

I kind of hope not to be honest; I like him meeting new people and I don't want a parade of old guys.

I disagree. I’d love to see Sallah back, get some continuity. Especially if Indy is in Morocco.
With the passing of Sean Connery and Denholm Elliot, we can’t get the old crew on board.
As much as I love Jim Broadbent and John Hurt. Crystal Skull lacked a good ally that Indy knows. Marion was a great inclusion. But Indy needed a known male friend I feel. Someone the audience knows. A return of Sallah would be great.

He looks great! He seems to have aged very little since The Force Awakens which was where I initially thought they'd be pushing it.

Yes it seems mad they didn't make it then.

Indy knew everyone in Skull apart from Mutt, really: Hurt, Winstone, Broadbent, Allen. And they were as known to the audience as Sallah was in Raiders.
Ford in a fedora again is fine, but I just feel like Davies in a fez next to him and it starts to look a bit sad.
  • I have no problem whatsoever in seeing John Rhys Davies return. Fine actor.

Sallah should have just been a one off character like Columbo in FYEO or Draco in OHMSS. Just because he came back for one sequel doesn’t mean they should contrive a way for him to appear again.

This is very true. He's a lovely character (mostly because JRD imbues him with so much life and energy) but it's not necessary for him to come back. If he were to come back, I think the wedding at the end of KOTCS would have been the appropriate place. It would have been nice to see him and Short Round there. But hey, you can't have everything in life.

Damn, Ford looks fantastic in that image, pretty ripped for his age.

A Dane is cast as a german nazi villain, so casting a brit as an moroccan shouldn't raise any eyebrows.

Ford does look lean, he cut Meat and Dairy from his diet and is a fellow cyclist...
Harrison Ford's fitness regime includes a 40 mile cycle everyday on set of Indiana Jones

    But whites are interchangeable.

Now, if you cast Mads as an Arabic character then you’d see concerns.

In the last 10 years Helen Mirren played an israeli jew, Bale played Moses and Jake Gyllenhaal played the prince of Persia. Just to name a few. That was before woke '19 where eveyone started to get offended, though, so I guess you have to cast an arab to play an arab, an eskimo to play an eskimo, a native american to play an indian, and a asian to play....anyone from Asia :-) Guess Mel Gibson has to recast the actor playing Jesus in his sequel. Caviezel is not a jew but an orthodox catholic.

Yeah that would have been fine, beyond that it's unnecessary. I don't need Short Round again either- he was great, but then you're just doing nostalgia rather than story.

Nationality and race aren't the same thing.
    Sallah is presumably Egyptian, anyway.

Bingo. This is why there is no way Sallah will return. In fact, it's kind of astonishing some people still think he might return. And you can't even blame Disney for it, they are simply protecting their multi-million dollar property.

In this day and age, Davies returning as Sallah could create quite the backlash.

In fact, I'm surprised social media hasn't caught on to this and advocated the eraser of both RAIDERS and LAST CRUSADE because of Sallah.

Of course if we erased RAIDERS and LAST CRUSADE, we'd only be left with TEMPLE and CRYSTAL SKULL. Bad idea.
    Never mind. Carry on.....................

Also, an American plays Sherlock Holmes, a British icon. A Welshman played Batman, and now a English actor will play him for the foreseeable future. Same with Superman. American icons. Actors like to try different characters and things. Disney can take a chance on trying this, even though they already failed at it with Johnny Depp and The Lone Ranger. Relax, Sallah deserves a chance to return as much as Marion, Lando, Black Widow, Tony Stark or any other characters they decide to bring back for nostalgia reasons.

I would say again that nationality is not the same as race.

It's not the reason that I'm not interested in Sallah reappearing, but it probably wouldn't help.

If Twitter didn’t go insane over Davies playing an Arab, they’d certainly be over the use of yellow face.

I guess in their defence, finding a Tibetan stuntman in the Home Counties was a tricky ask in the early 80s! :D
Pat Roach browning up in Temple is maybe slightly less forgivable- even Octopussy didn't go that far! (did it?)

Luckily the cancel-culture can't delete my Monty Python collection where men played women who dressed up as middleeastern men, or this hilarious movie:

Nobody would really be against those examples. RDJ wasn't even playing a black character.

And we still have SNL on the air, featuring comedians playing different genders and ethnicity, but they pull it off.

Yeah that kind of was the joke in Tropic Thunder: that RDJ's character really shouldn't be doing that and most other characters around him found it distasteful.

Although they made Princess Peach from Super Mario into an Italian, which is just wrong :D

There was a bit of a backlash on the Simple Jack gag where people thought Ben Stiller was making fun of special needs people but he was just satirizing the trend of Hollywood actors tackling roles like that for Oscar bait.
