Apologies if you mentioned this already, but is the "halo" around the characters still there in the 4K version? This image suggests it is.

I just took yet another look at this scene and although the glow off the sunny bits is still present, it looks vastly lower key to my eyes. I had to look for it as opposed to having it in my face.

Yeah that's what I meant by the light bloom: I guess it was probably something created by the lenses so is part of the original image.

But doesn't it look less intrusive to you without the yellow digital wash?

I only ask because I quite like that 'glow'. It takes me back to films from the 1940s.

Yeah, a little glow has that effect, but on my BD it's overkill.

I think so, I haven't watched them side by side so hard to say.

Well, I'm gonna begin my backwards Indy marathon tonight with Crystal Skull (yeah, Imma skip Dial this time around).

Just finished Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull on my new 4K disk, and I have to say it's like I've watched it for the first time. I *LOVE* this film. Sure, it ain't as killer as the first three, but I adore it anyway. Such fantastic subtle Spielberg moments that I overlooked previously. The importance of the removal of the piss yellow digital wash cannot be made clear if you haven't experienced it. 9/10. I will die on this rating hill.

I agree with you on CS. It is so interesting. It has great ideas.

The first three Indiana Jones movies are awesome, I think we can all pretty much agree on this.
The last two, ahhh, there's my rub. They are like pendulum swings. Where Crystal Skull gets arguably too lighthearted, Dial Of Destiny gets arguably too depressing.
I just got the 4K of Crystal Skull which has been for me up until now the ugliest Jones movie of the bunch, and suddenly it looks fabulous, like I'm seeing it for the first time. And suddenly, I'm in love with it, fridge fly & all.
    [Spoilers follow]
Dial Of Destiny is recent, and I saw it twice theatrically and once on my very pretty Blu Ray, and I find myself not loving the idea that Mutt had to be dead to divide Indy & Marion and set up the whole thrust of the 'depressive mode'. Yes, it gave Ford an amazingly effective scene on the boat with 'Wombat', but it makes me realize something....
Ford said that the character of Indy would die with him. Well, I believe that Spielberg is as important as Ford is to an Indy movie. As silly as some moments in Crystal Skull were, it was still an Indiana Jones movie to me. James Mangold, on the other hand, gave me a painful deconstruction of the character Ford & Spielberg created. So, Crystal Skull is better than Dial of Destiny.
This is, of course, just my opinion.
And I will, of course, cover my heart. B-)

Watched DoD for the 2nd time since I saw it in theaters last year. I liked it just as much as I did the first time. It's ranked number 3 of the 5 Indy movies behind Last Crusade and ROTLA.

Unlike the Bond movies we have a small pool from which to choose our favourites. Any ranking is therefore reasonably justified. No Indy film ever had a 'Moonraker'.... lol.

You be surprised to know Moonraker in my number 2 favorite Bond film of the 25 and I def like it better than Indy DoD, ToD, and KOTCS

We all have our favourites! For many reasons. It's all good!

Bottom line, I only really love Raiders and Temple of Doom! I never liked Last Crusade. I found it too lightweight, and none of the excitement of the first two, the only good thing about it, for me, was Connery! The recent two are watchable only, but have no intention of adding them to my collection! ( which is just two!! 😂)

Rewatched The Last Crusade the other day. It's magnificent. The opening sequence is so much fun, too - I would have liked to see Phoenix play a Young Indiana Jones again if history had played out that way.

I don't know if I'd say it's the best of them, there's something a little scrappy about it compared to the others, but Last Crusade probably has the finest script. It's amazing: everything is called back to, everything has a reason to be there and it's so full of wit. It's a very clever script.

I heard that Lucas and Spielberg wanted to make another prequel with Phoenix as Young Indy. Apparently, this was after Young Indy was cancelled, but unfortunately River Phoenix passed away. It is a shame that we didn't get to see more of River Phoenix as Indy, in general.

It sounds like a lot of the better ideas of TLC honestly came from Jeffrey Boam and Tom Stoppard. It's a shame that Jeffrey Boam passed away so young. He was a great screenplay writer. He did The Dead Zone, (one of Stephen King's best adaptations), and helped make the Lethal Weapon series funnier. I know he did a story draft of Indy 4 in the 90's, but then Independence Day (1996) came out, and Spielberg said no. The long story development continued. It's also a shame that Tom Stoppard wasn't credited for his work. He also helped Lucas on Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith (as did Spielberg, for a lot of the final fight scenes). Screenplay writing and credits are a truly unique thing.

Maybe this will be the way that the next generation will get to experience Indiana Jones. It arguably may be the better way, than recasting the role. He's really a timeless character.

He did a good job of getting the Ford mannerisms down. So even though there was no physical resemblance we could see Indy in his portrayal.

There was a time when I was sort of vaguely apologetic for liking Crystal Skull in much the same way as I was for liking Die Another Day. Those days are over. I love both of them, and if you don't it's your loss. On the flip side of this I don't know if I will ever watch Dial Of Destiny or No Time To Die ever again, and in the short run that may be my loss.
I may come to a dramatic reversal and rediscover them in the coming year(s), who can tell. Ever in motion are we....
    Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you as well! I still think that both DOD and NTTD are among the finest entries of the respective franchise. So keep digging, and maybe you'll come to rediscover them (or discover them for the first time, I don't know).

Oh, I'll probably come back to both once the pain is dulled by time. OHMSS was like that for me...

There’s a great website which documents all the additions and changes Stoppard made and they were pretty revelatory. Like Boam had Henry calling Indy Junior all the way through, but Stoppard added the climax where he finally calls him Indy: which in retrospect seems kind of obvious and makes the whole thing work.

I think of both Dial of Destiny and No Time to Die as flawed but worthy final fifth entries to their respective series. I prefer NTTD, though.

Happy New Year! Thank you for the info @mtm Stoppard really should have been credited. Later this year, (hopefully) there will be a new History of Indiana Jones book. It has been delayed more than once, probably due to DOD not doing as well as they thought.

True. But its successors often overuse it in the wrong ways. As for Indy, I do hope that a TV show, or relaunch of the books is being considered. Indiana Jones is too good to be just sat on for just one movie or video game.
