What would a film that showed Bond's origins go like?

edited September 2012 in Bond Movies Posts: 188
If Christopher Nolan were to take over the Bond franchise after Mendes and Craig have left in the years to come, and Nolan pursued the much rumoured notion of a trilogy of movies starring Michael Fassbender as a young/er Bond and showing Bond's origins, then what would THAT movie contain plotwise?

I haven't read all the Bond books, so I don't know if Bond's origins have ever been properly mentioned.

Would a Bond origins film show why Bond is a hardened killer, a womaniser - would it show Bond re-recieving his double-O status?

Anyone have any thoughts?

I'm guessing it would be Casino Royale ;) Since that was Bonds origin story.

I'd love a Nolan Bond film, but a trilogy? With Fassbender? Erm, no thanks.

I think what you want here is basically Nolans Batman trilogy, showing his origins and everything, but with Bond. It won't happen. We've gotten the origin story already and the Bond films aren't about continuation, so no trilogies.

And no Fassbender. I don't want him as Bond. Scott Adkins should be next imo.

I would not like to see origin revisited again! After DC steps down from the role? I wanna see an establiseh 007 doing his job.

We just had such a film its title is Casino Royale.
You want to look into his childhood? His military record? His recruitment to MI6? His transfer to the 00 status?

Perhaps you should write the screenplay and sell it to EON. Forget EON, Hollywood is always looking for good stories.
    Go for it.

    This could be Christopher Nolan's opportunity to direct! It could finally have Christian Bale as Bond- and maybe someone like Liam Neeson could be the villain. 8-}

He hands Bond the PPK: 'Are you ready to begin?'

And he says to the Bond girl "It's not who I am underneath, but what tuxedo I wear that defines me." :P

In all seriousness, to hear Dan say the original quote would be awesome.
  • I'm really against this whole trilogy idea, Fassbender as Bond and showing Bonds origin again.

But I would still love a Nolan Bond film.
  • Here's the thing though about 'origins'. For most characters (most superheroes excluded) it takes all the fun and mystery out of them.

Prime example is Boba Fett. They ruined him. He's why I would never want to see any sort of 'prequel' starring young Han Solo- despite him being my absolute favorite character in the whole saga.

Same goes for Bond. I mean what would we actually see in such a movie? Him firing a gun for the first time? Like at a target? Trying to flirt with a girl and get turned down because he hasn't mastered it yet?

We know from a few of his movies about his parents accident- but to me, that's plenty

    Completely agree with this.

Casino Royale was origins enough for me. Don't really want to see his childhood/past, the Young Bond books explored that and they're good, and would love to see them as a TV show or miniseries or something, but not for a Bond film. I like Bond the way he is, I like not knowing too much about his past and why he is the way he is. I like the mystery, I like the fun of having someone who is just good at what he does without knowing why.

With the 'firing a gun for the first time' and the 'flirting with a girl' thing, Master_Dahark is right. Imagine having to revisit every one of Bond's abilities just to explain how he's good at it. Would just be tedious.

Also don't want to see Nolan do another Batman Begins for Bond. I like him, but I think there are better choices (though that is a topic for another thread)

You know who should get an 'origin' movie? Indiana Jones.

Hear me out-- The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was a good idea- but they went about it all wrong. For one thing, they went too far back. I watched the first few episodes with him as a kid but couldn't stomach them and skipped ahead to the ones starring Sean Patrick Flannery. A couple of his episodes were alright-- and one even had Daniel Craig in it!
That show had two big problems though:
1: It rarely captured the feel of the movies. In fact, the only ones that came close were 'Treasure of the Peacock's Eye' and 'Mystery of the Blues' (the later only because it guest-starred Harrison Freaking Ford) But back to the tone-- I knew right when the entire soundtrack consisted of 1910's Jazzy acoustic music 90% of the time, that we weren't watching the Indiana Jones we all wanted to watch
2: They forced history down our throats! It just wasn't fun like the Indy movies were. I admit- the whole idea of Indy meeting a real-life famous person 'Forrest Gump style' was a cool idea, but they just did it to death!! It became more of a joke

I would be totally open to an origin story for Indy. Remember the beginning of Last Crusade? It was adventurous- and we got to see how he got his scar, the firs time he used a whip, and even got his signature hat. That's the kind of movie I want to see. It could even have Harrison Ford as 'present day' Indy and the origin could be a flashback.

    I have spoken ^:)^

Read yesterday that Spielberg, Ford and Karen Allen all want to do another but are waiting for Lucas to write a script. I like your idea a lot.

Lucas (I know, million to one chance that he reads these forums), you have your idea. Get to it.

@lewisblake up there only has one post-- maybe he's a Lucas 'idea scout'

That's why I don't like Rob Zombies Halloween reboot. What was scary about Myers is that we didn't know much about him really. The reboot ruined that by telling us about his childhood.

As for taking out the fun, Robin Hood (2010) was the best example of that. Instead of being a fun popcorn adventure film they tried too hard to make it "dark" and "gritty", and we ended up with a film nothing like Robin Hood. It was just Gladiator, but crappier.

Shame because I really like Ridley Scott and Rob Zombie is pretty cool, so I expected more out of those 2 films.
  • lol I wish I was a lucasscout! or anything that well paid lol
I do want to be a scriptwriter in the future though - but that's pie-in-the-sky for now.
I've recently become obsessed with everything Bond and I'm watching all the films, and will eventually work my way through the books.

    But I'd read a few online articles concerning where Bond as a franchise - governed by MGM, EON et al - may go after Daniel Craig has hung up his holster and PPK for good, a rumour mill that has churned for longer than it should have due to the bother MGM got into in recent years. The rumour mill contains basically 3 options I was interested in (all of course redundant until Daniel Craig completes another few Bond movies which are on his contract - 2 I believe? - and with Mendes hopefully);

    1) Christopher Nolan takes over the Bond films, and does a far too predictable origins focused reboot, with Michael Fassbender as Bond. This idea intrigued me, as it has many of you, as Casino Royale is a beginning story for Bond and as much 'origins' as you need or want. Also, would Bond be shown being made double-O status AGAIN!

Nolan has indeed confirmed he wants to direct a Bond film (though he states now is not quite the time), and this desire can be seen in alot of the action sequences in the likes of Inception in my opinion. Fassbender has also expressed interest in being Bond (though he's have to bulk up like Craig did!) There's a fan-made trailer on youtube that is made as if Nolan was making a Bond film - the fan-made trailer is basically bits of Nolan's films inter-spliced with shots of Fassbender from X-Men First Class and Inglourious Basterds.

Tom Hardy has also gone on record as stating he would love to be Bond in a Nolan-made Bond film.

    2) which brings me on to Quentin Tarantinos' bid to make a Bond movie; Most of you will be aware that Tarantino claims Broccoli, MGM and co 'pilfered' his idea to remake Casino Royale. Tarantino has since said he wishes to adapt a trilogy of Len Deighton novels in a bid to make a rival spy franchise to Bond. But am I the only one who thinks it would be cool if Tarantino bought back an older Pierce Brosnan (who would have reprised the role of Bond in Tarantino's botched Casino Royale version) to play a grizzly Bond ala Never Say Never Again/A View to a Kill????

Just who will take over after Craig leaves?
How many movies has Craig got in him?

  • But I would still love a Nolan Bond film.

If it does happen, you'll pretty much know the whole cast already. ;)

Michael Caine as a cockney M would be brilliant! Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard would both make excellent Bond girls, and Christian Bale (only 38) a superb Bond. Morgan Freeman could be a good tech guy, but I don't think even EON could get God to appear in a Bond film.

And Gary Oldman would be Q, so Bond could could say: "A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as giving him an armored attaché case to let him know that Spectre hadn't end him."
Sorry... can't resist to this jokes.

Now in a serious mode, appart from his parents dying in the climbing accident (which isn't as dramatic as being shot in his presence), Bond's origin doesn't seems interesting to me.
Student in public schools, learns judo, got expeled from Eton, learns golf and skiing, goes to the Navy, enters the Service... and that's it. His strong motivation is found in CR and that's already been told. So no Bond Begins, nor MI6: First Class.

''Bond, your only supposed to blow the bloomin doors off''!! I think James would kill his Q in a matter of seconds!!!!
  • Gary Oldman as Q, and Michael Caine as M... not for me, I'm afraid. Maybe some humor was evident, but it's something I hope never sees the light of day, of course this will never happen I'm sure of it, but even so
  • I'd like Micheal Caine as M actually. Not a bad idea.

I don't think so... Caine is just too sympathetic.
  • Michael Caine as a cockney bossy M? How about Ray Winstone?
  • M to Bond "Oi Shut it Bond, you muppet, you tart!
  • lewisblake wrote:

Winstone could be a great villian I think.
  • Personally I have never had any desire to see the origins of Bond, I have always liked the fact that Bond was always a fully formed character with hundreds of missions behind him, this is probably why Casino Royale didn't really do it for me, it took the mysterious element away from the character.
  • Was also curious about something - how do you guys thing they'll slot in a new, younger Bond? Say, if Michael Fassbender took over as Bond - a 35 year old taking over from a 46 year old;

Would they just supplant Fassbender in place of Craig with the same supporting cast around him? Will they try and do a Mad Men style story set in another decade? Will they mention in the plot that this is a younger Bond, and have a film-story take place somewhere between, say; Goldfinger and Thunderball? etc

Watch Harry Brown. Not much sympathy there.

Chances are they'll just do what they always did before Craig, carry on as normal, and I think that's what they should do. I don't think CR should've been a reboot/origin story either.
