Sir Sean Connery once advised a friend to avoid the hallucinogenic drug LSD as the James Bond star had once experienced a bad trip himself, she claims.

Irish writer Edna O'Brien said that the Scottish actor told her how his trip with psychiatrist RD Laing had a 'freight of terrors'. O'Brien refers to the episode in her new memoir, Country Girl, where she describes a conversation she had with the Bond actor in May 1970 when she was planning to meet Laing and take the drug herself.

'I had learnt from Sean Connery, with whom I had dinner the previous evening, that his own LSD trip with Laing — both being old friends from Scotland — had its own freight of terrors,' O'Brien writes.

'Yet I did not cancel the appointment. It was as if in some way I believed I could go through with it and yet escape the terrible ordeal.'

According to the <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2207459/Sir-Sean-Connery-told-avoid-LSD-bad-trip-took-drug-Edna-OBrien-claims.html?ito=feeds-newsxml"; target="_blank">Daily Mail</a>, "Connery has never spoken publicly about his involvement with Laing, who became an icon of the 1960s counter-culture movement after he argued that LSD had therapeutic benefits. However, the actor's first wife, Diane Cilento, has previously alleged that Laing persuaded him to take the powerful drug to help him deal with stress after he appeared as Bond in 1964 movie Goldfinger."

Taking LSD was legal at the time. Possession of the drug was only outlawed in Britain in 1966.

  • Glad to see him speak out against it than for it. Good therapy is worth a lot more than any drugs for mental help.

    zardoz+(23).jpg
  • I remember seeing Zardoz with my father, when I was a teenager. We came out of the theater and he asked, "What was that about?" I said the filmmaker must have been on drugs. Who knew?

The image of Connery as Zardoz will forever haunt my nightmares, believe me! I think it's by far the weirdest film I have ever seen (or half seen, I couldn't stand to watch it full, it was too ~X( )
  • I can relate. I tripped once too back in the 70's and didn't enjoy it either.

Regarding Zardoz, I believe Sir Sean had a flashback when he signed up for this turkey.

Has anyone actually seen Zardoz? Like from beginning to end? It was on Netflix last year and I sat through the whole thing-- there's actually a decent movie buried somewhere in it, but it's just TOO DAMN WEIRD. I'd actually like to see it again sometime (with a drink or two)
  • I took acid when i saw octopussy and i thought Bond was a gorrila.

Walken did LSD with Raul Julia back in the day , this was the period when Berkoff was directing them on stage......
